DRUG STUDY
I. GENERIC NAME: acetaminophenII. BRAND NAME: Paracetamol
III. CLASSIFICATION: antipyretics, nonopioid analgesicsIV. MODE OF ACTION: Inhibits the systhesis of prostaglandins that may serve as mediators of pain and fever, primarily in the CNS. V. INDICATION: Relief of mild to moderate pain, treatment of fever
VI. SIDE EFFECTS: Stimulation, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, hepatoxicity, hepatic seizure (overdose), renal failure, leucopenia,neutropenia, hemolytic anemia (long term use), thrombocytopenia, rash, uticaria, hypersensitivity, cyanosis, anemia, neutropenia, jaundice,
pancytopenia, CNS stimulation, convulsion
VII. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity; intolerance to tartrazine, alcohol, table sugarVIII. NURSING RESPONSIBILITY:
BEFORE:~ Advise parents or caregivers to check concentrations of liquid preparations. Errors have resulted in serious liver damage.
~ Assess fever; note presence of associated signs (diaphoresis, tachycardia, and malaise).
DURING:
~ Adults should not take acetaminophen longer than 10 days and children not longer than 5 days unless directed by health care professional.
~ Advise mother or caregiver to take medication exactly as directed and not to take more than the recommended amount.
AFTER:
~ Advise patient to consult health care professional if discomfort or fever is not relieved by routine doses of this drug or if fever is greater than 39.5C

I. GENERIC NAME: ClarithromycinII. BRAND NAME: Biaxin
III. CLASSIFICATION: Anti-biotic, Macro-lideIV. MODE OF ACTION: Macrolide antibiotic that acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible organisms, thus interfering with or inhibiting
microbial protein synthesis.
V. INDICATION: >Treatment of upper respiratory infections caused by S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae>Treatment of lower respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis
>Treatment of skin and skin-structure infections caused by S. aureus, S. pyogenes
>Treatment of disseminated mycobacterial infections due to M. avium and M. intracellular
>Treatment of active duodenal ulcer with H. pyloriin combination with proton pump inhibitor
VI. SIDE EFFECTS:VII. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersen-sitivity to clarithro-mycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or erythro-mycin. Clients taking pimozide. Use with
ranitidine bismuth citrate in those with history of acute porphyria
VIII. NURSING RESPONSIBILITY:Before:
-Note sensitivity to erythromycin or any macrolide antibiotics.
-List drugs currently prescribed to prevent any interactions.
-Document onset, severity and characteristics of S&S.
During:-May administer with or without food.
-Explain effects of the drug and its side effects.
-Administer as prescribed.
After:
-Report adverse effects or lack of improvement after 48-72 hr.
-Report any persistent diarrhea.
-Document administration of medication.

I. GENERIC NAME: HydrocortisoneII. BRAND NAME: Cortizan
III. CLASSIFICATION: GlucocorticoidIV. MODE OF ACTION: Decrease inflammation mainly by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. Also suppresses the immune response, stimulates
bone marrow, and influences protein fat and carbohydrate metabolism
V. INDICATION: treatment of primary or secondary adrenal cortex in sufficiency, rheumatic disorders, collagen diseases, dermatologic disease, allergicstates, allergic and inflammatory ophthalmic processes respiratory disease, hematologic disorders, neoplastic disease, edematous states, multiple
sclerosis, tuberculous meningitis, myocardial involvement.
VI. SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, weakness, nausea, drowsiness.VII. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Contraindicated in patient with hypersensitivity to drug or its ingredients.
VIII. NURSING RESPONSIBILITY: Give IM injection deep into gluteal muscle rotate injection site.Warn patient of drowsiness.
