Dr.S.Ramananda Shetty M.D.S.

Vice-Chancellor, RGUHS

Born in 1950 in an agricultural family in the village near Kundapur, Coastal District of Dakshina Kannada. He was graduated from three different universities. B.Sc from Mysore University, BDS from Bangalore University and MDS from Mangalore University. Did his BDS from Government Dental College, Bangalore in the year 1976 and did his MDS from KMC, Manipal in January 1985. Started his career as a Tutor in Prosthodontics KMC, Manipal in 1977 and joined Government Service in 1978, as an Assistant Dental Surgeon in Udupi Civil Hospital and ESI Hospital Bangalore. Joined Government Dental College as teaching faculty and promoted to the post of Professor and HOD and later became Principal of Government Dental College, Bangalore in 2001. As a committed teacher and academician, he was involved in over all development of students in Academics, Sports and Culture to see them not only as a competent professionals but also a responsible citizens and a good human beings. Being a strong believer in worshiping the mother institute, Government Dental College, Bangalore he succeeded in transforming Government Dental College into most modern Government Dental Institute in the country today. During his tenure as a Principal, he strengthened the Alumni Association of Government Dental College started by Dr. Shivarathna Savadi and motivated the Alumni to contribute liberally for their alma mater. Apart from occupying various positions in the University Bodies, he was the examiner of BDS, MDS, DNB in more than 22 universities in the country. He was instrumental in conducting more than 10 national and international events. Delivered orations, lectures, key note addresses in the subject of Prosthodontics through out the country. He was elevated to the post of Director of Medical Education in 2004, and remembered as longest served Director of Medical Education in the state of Karnataka.

He was member of Syndicate in 8 universities in Karnataka and a member of academic senate of 10 different universities in Karnataka and outside Karnataka State. He considers the starting of 6 new Government Medical Colleges, one Government Dental College and 3 Government Nursing colleges during his tenure as Director of Medical Education is most satisfying service since this happened after the gap of 50 years and it is a record by any state government in the country. He was President of Prosthodontic Forum, Member of Dental Council of India, Karnataka Medical Council, Chairman, Para Medical Board, Chairman, Selection Committee for PG and UG candidates for Para Medical Courses, President, Karnataka Nursing Council, Chairman and Member Secretary of many committees constituted by the Government and held several responsible posts. He was also Director incharge of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology for 6 months, the biggest cancer institute in the state and second largest in the country next to Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Bombay. He was elevated to the coveted post of 5th Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in July 2008 and he was the first from the Dental Faculty to occupy this post.
