vulnerability of poor people in Vietnam to the impacts of climate change through: Coordination Advocacy Capacity building

DRR/CCA Integration into school: Initiative Background
• MoET National Action Plan on CC and DRR• Lots of materials but not always child friendly• Lack of consultations and inputs from local
teachers, education leaders• A lot of good practices not widely shared• Localized
Objectives• Introduce CC & DRR content and messaging
into schools;• Development of the resource package in line
with National Action Plan – child friendly, effective and easy to access tools that teachers can utilise;
• Utilise and facilitate the operationalization of participatory teaching methods for climate change education;

Participatory Methodologies and Process
• National workshop with MoET and provincial teachers for needs assessment and sharing on material

DRR Materials• Lesson plan:
– Module: identification of hazard, basic concepts, climate change, vulnerable groups, measures taken by students, drill and practice at school (life vest wearing, drill, evacuation exercise, emergency kits set up)
– Basic knowledge for students– Lesson plan– Additional materials
• Reference for teachers• Hands-out with pictures• Multiple choice exercise• Game, video, poster recommended
• Information for students:– Introduction of hazards– Measures that students can do

– Lesson plan: starting up, issue analysis, lesson strengthened through multiple choice questions and games/video

Appraised and approved by MoET• Appraisal panel include teachers and scientists
from schools and Institute of Science Hydrology, Meteorology and Environment., MONRE
• The package is highly appraised:– “using diversified and interesting teaching and
learning activities”– “applying participatory approach”– “ providing scientific, updated, practical
information”
• Currently, the package was piloted in 12 provinces (by SC, Plan, MoET, BC)
• UNDP Armenia utilises information from the package
• SC in some African countries interested in translating the books into local languages
Going forward• Scale-up to National level, linking with MoET
Action Plan on DRR and climate change; and National Program on CBDRM– Organize Master TOTR for key resource teachers
and educational leaders– National and regional workshop for sharing– Advocate MoET/DMC for roll-out at other
province– Continue to adjust and localize
