Westchester Playa Village (WPV) is a grassroots, volunteer-driven membership organization committed to supporting older adults, 55 years of age and over, living in the neighborhoods of Westchester, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista, Marina del Rey and Ladera Heights. For $500 per year for an individual senior or $750 for two seniors in the same household, WPV coordinates volunteers to provide transportation services, do small household chores or just keep seniors company. Linda Berri, who runs WPV, said the chief request from members is simply a ride to the doctor or to the grocery store. Berri (pictured in her Airport Office Center office) said members and volunteers often develop relationships with each other and both benefit from the experience. Because they now have access to transportation, seniors often do a better job of visiting all the healthcare providers they should; and volunteers get the satisfaction of giving back to the seniors in need within their own community. “It just works on so many levels,” said Berri, who added that WPV is modeled after the successful, nationally recognized Beacon Hill Village model in Boston. WPV has a long list of potential members, but is still seeking volunteers – all of whom must undergo DMV and background checks before being paired with a senior. For more information on WPV and how you can help or become a member, please call (310) 695-7030.

Stop by and check out the beautiful remodeling job at Starbucks Coffee, 8817 S. Sepulveda Boulevard, in Westchester Village.

Manager Ava Bell tells us that, perhaps, the best part of the remodeling is the addition of a new Clover® brewing system.

The Clover® brewing system includes an innovative design that lets you discover new layers and dimensions within a coffee’s familiar aroma, flavor, body and acidity. The result is a deeper experience – one that’s carefully prepared and made to order, one cup at a time. The Clover® brewing system uses innovative Vacuum-Press technology to create your cup right in front of you. You watch as a stainless steel filter lowers into the brew chamber. Hot water is added at a precise temperature to brew your coffee for an ideal length of time.

The system controls brew time and temperature digitally, as even small changes here can dramatically affect the outcome you taste in the cup. A thermal blanket surrounds the brew chamber to keep water within 1 degree Fahrenheit of the ideal temperature. After the coffee brews, it is pulled through a 70-micron filter. The resulting grounds are pushed out of the top of the machine. The coffee itself flows into your cup – hot, aromatic and amazingly flavorful. We’re pretty sure it will be the best cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted!

BROOKLYN WATER BAGELS COME TO WESTCHESTERThe Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. is gearing up to become just the company’s second West Coast location when its doors open in early 2012. In the midst of renovating the former Coldstone Creamery site at 8732 S. Sepulveda Boulevard, owner David Habibi said he is excited about

bringing real Brooklyn bagels to Westchester.

“Everything is made from scratch,” he said. “We will make all the dough on-site and even add real Brooklynized water!”

Since “it’s all about the water,” the location’s focal point will be a front-and-center stainless steel Brooklyn water processing plant, cased in polished seamless glass. It is here that the Brooklynized water will be manufactured, bottled and capped under 24-hour spotlights. Habibi said the water will include the same mineral composition as the water in Brooklyn itself.

In addition to featuring its signature innovative bagel and specialty menu, The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. will offer California-style Omelet menu items such as a Matzo Brie with Apple Chutney; Cinnamon & Apple-Walnuts, Honey & Goat Cheese; Asparagus-Egg White Omelet with Parmesan, Scallion & Pumpkin Seeds; and Avocado with Tomato Salsa, Shredded Cheddar with Sour Cream-Avocado Oil. Additional menu items will include: pizza melts,

Scooper melts and freshly cut fries. Don Duckworth, Executive Director of the Westchester Town Center BID welcomed news of this new eating destination.

“This is another of many exciting improvements in the Westchester Town Center that fulfill the community’s desires and our promise ‘Shop, Dine, and Enjoy!’” he said.

Habibi said that the 2,500-square-foot location will include seating for about 30 guests and added that he is exploring the possibility of adding outdoor seating as well.

DROLLINGER WAY DEDICATIONBe on the lookout for the official name change of 87th Street to Howard Drollinger Way to honor the man known as “Mr. Westchester.” In 1944, Ella Drollinger built the community’s first commercial building. Her son, Howard, and his wife, Jewel, continued that legacy by developing and redeveloping properties throughout the Westchester area.

HOLIDAY HOME TOUROn Sunday, November 6, the Westchester Mental Health Guild’s annual Holiday Home Tour will feature five spectacular homes, all decorated for various holidays. The tour of homes will occur between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Ticketed guests visit the homes and then attend a festive reception.

organization that is setting out to provide amazing services for our seniors – the “Jewels of Westchester” – and I invite you to help spread the word. Better yet, contribute to this worthy organization.

I would also like to thank all of our elders who have dedicated their time, money and wisdom to make Westchester and the world a better place. There is always a danger in naming names, because you inevitably leave someone out. But taking that risk, I start off by thanking my Dad, Howard Drollinger, for his years of service in our Westchester community, Westchester Rotary, YMCA, AMCS, Loyola Marymount University, just to name a few. I would like to thank Morrey Plotkin for his years of service to Westchester, Empowertech and Playa Village. And a long list of our community’s true jewels: Marty Francis, Lloyd and Renate Hild, Joe Callinan, Bob Smith, Alan and Mary Ellen Cassman, Sandy Luboviski, Frances Stronks, Booker Pearson and many, many others.

And remember this insightful quote from Eleanor Roosevelt:

“Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” Namaste,
