TODAY IN THE 21ST CENTURY DIVERSITY IS WHAT WE NEED AND HAVE FOR EVERYONE TO BE HAPPY LIVING WITH EVERY KIND OF PEOPLE LIKE CHINESE, FRENCH, JAPENESE, INDIAN, AND KOREAN AND MUCH MORE. 33

ROLE MODEL TO WORLD

DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR HAS BEEN A GREAT ROLE MODEL TO US IN THE 21ST

CENTURY AND TOLD THE WORLD THAT EVERYBODY COULD LIVE TOGETHER AND BE HAPPY AND HIS DREAM CAME TRUE.

IN HIS “I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH IN AUGUST 28,1963 HE EMPHASIZED HIS BELIEF THAT SOMEDAY ALL MEN COULD BE BROTHERS.56

OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY

TODAY IN OUR BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY AND HOME TO OTHERS , NOVI SCHOOLS HAVE A GOAL TO REACH TO MAKE OTHERS UNIQUE IN THERE OWN WAY IN THERE OWN SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITIES. 32

HOW CAN WE IMPROVE SCHOOLS? WE CAN IMPROVE OUR SCHOOLS WITH

PRINCIPLES OF TEACHER STUDENT LEARNING. LET ME TELL YOU SOME TEACHER LEARNING

FIRST. Principle 1: Professional development programs

should help teachers understand the complex characteristics of ethnic groups within U.S. society and the ways in which race, ethnicity, language, and social class interact to influence student behavior.55

Principle 2: Teachers should help students acquire the social skills needed to interact effectively with students from other racial, ethnic, cultural, and language groups.

Principle 3: Schools should provide opportunities for students from different racial, ethnic, cultural, and language groups to interact socially under conditions designed to reduce fear and anxiety.51

NOW LET ME TELL YOU SOME STUDENT LEARNING.

Principle 1: Schools should ensure that all students have equitable opportunities to learn and to meet high standards.

Principle 2: The curriculum should help students understand that knowledge is socially constructed and reflects researchers’ personal experiences as well as the social, political, and economic contexts in which they live and work.59

Principle 3: Schools should provide all students with opportunities to participate in extra- and curricular activities that develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that increase academic achievement and foster positive interracial relationships.31

DIVERSITY WITHIN UNITY

Many of the students entering our nation’s schools speak a first language other than English. The 1990 census indicated that 14% of the nation’s school-age youth lived in homes in which the primary language was not English. In addition to the increase of racial, ethnic, and language diversity among the student population, more and more students are poor.

The percentage of children living in poverty rose from 16.2% in 1979 to 18.7% in 1998 and more now. The gap between rich and poor students is also increasing. While the student population is becoming increasingly diverse, the teaching force remains predominantly White, middle-class, and female.

In 1996, 90.7% of the nation’s teachers were White, and almost three quarters (74.4%) were female according to National Education Association Research. Consequently, a wide cultural, racial, and economic gap exists between teachers and a growing percentage of the nation’s students.
