FEATURING SESSIONS ON:
The costs of managing corrosion once it has started can be staggering. It’s much easier and less expensive to take the precautions to prevent corrosion decay before it starts. Attend this conference to hear operational readiness initiatives to identify opportunities for improvement in coating and corrosion.
This conference is designed to bring all the elements together to demonstrate the practical applications of coatings and corrosion prevention, equipment productivity, life cycle and life cycle cost management with reference to relevant case studies on new and ageing assets.
Top 3 reasons to attend this conference:
1. Stay up-to-date on what’s new in the marketplace for coatings and corrosion professionals
2. Be inspired by fresh case studies from industry and walk away with a practical roadmap for corrosion prevention success
3. Opportunity to network and meet people who share the same challenges

• Case studies to reflect on key issues and their application to new and ageing assets
Rob Dudley, Consulting Engineer, Quest Integrity
11.40 Designing in increased corrosion prevention to increase asset life span and reduce lifecycle costs
• Designing structures and parts that provides optimum corrosion prevention to overcome the weakest link in corrosion control
• Determining the mechanical properties and strength required to ensure that a structure is resistant to corrosion
• Overcoming top corrosion traps in design to avoid long term corrosion problems - New design thinking that mitigates
design-facilitated corrosion - Careful selection of materials that fits
the design with consideration to the particular environment, use and the corrosion control parameters.
12.20 Lunch break
1.20 Asset owners’ panel – What are asset owners’ expectations of corrosion prevention
• Examining the challenges asset owners expect through an asset lifecycle
• Looking into possible new products and systems that can extend the life of their assets
• Overcoming the challenge of selecting the right type of paint or coatings for various surfaces
• Strategies to minimise maintenance cost by prolonging the time between regular scheduled maintenance
Russell Bolt, Senior Lines Engineer, Asset Management, Transpower More panellists to be confirmed
2.00 Case study: Durable steel bridges within the NZTA Road Network
• Outlining the latest changes to NZTA’s protective coatings for steel bridges
• NZTA expectations and requirements for achieving the required time to first maintenance
• An overview of the new NZTA standard coatings specifications
Raed El Sarraf, Technical Principal – Materials and Corrosion, WSP Opus
2.40 Afternoon break
3.10 Proactive condition assessment to improve asset life in infrastructure
• Ascertain the reasons for performance deficiencies and failure
• Identify what corrective action is required and when
• Determine the optimum timeline required for cost effective rehabilitation
3.50 Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP)-reinforced concrete for marine and corrosive environments

DAY 2 24 JULY 20199.00 Welcome back from the Chair
Practical solutions to real world corrosion issues
9.10 Expectations for the Code of Practice within the passive fire protection industry
Over the years within New Zealand, there has been little to no clear direction given to the building industry with regards to what is expected from constructors, specifiers, engineers/architects, coating contractors and reviewing engineers/inspectors with regards to passive fire protection, primarily around intumescent coatings. For the last 6 months, the Fire Protection Association of NZ (FPANZ) has had a working group put together from various suppliers, contractors, local body
officials and other invested industry players, in order to develop a clear and easy to understand Code of Practice for NZ. This draft issue will be issued at the end of June 2018 before final issue come the end of July 2019. This is all in aid of lifting the standards of this particular industry sector to where they should be, so NZ doesn’t face a “Grenfell” building disaster.• Providing a level playing field for all parties,
knowing what the expectations are of them, what is the acceptance criteria for the work involved
• Assessing the pros and cons of various generic systems
• Evaluating training/competence of applicators and many more items.
Garth Moran, Technical Services Manager, Australasia,Carboline – Altex Coatings Ltd
9.50 Specifiers’ view: Building steelwork coatings – design and procurement challenges
• Identification of high risk failure zones• Challenges in predicting the durability of
coatings and materials in the New Zealand environment
• Protective coating issues that are encountered during procurement and construction
• Case studies of examples of where protection of structural steelwork in buildings has gone wrong
Ben Holliss, Associate, Structural Engineering, Fraser Thomas
10.30 Morning break
11.00 Reviewing new technologies in corrosion protection and their challenges
• Development of new materials and coatings• “Green” solutions – are they green and are
they in fact solutions?• Case study on applying new technology to
real production - Nanostructured corrosion sensing
coatings to perceive the actual degree of corrosion
- Smart coating for corrosion sensing and self-healing ability
11.40 Case study: Maintaining lattice steel transmission structures: Positioning for the future?
With some 23,600 lattice steel structures varying in age from 2 to 90 years, how do we plan to maintain these structures in perpetuity at least life-cycle cost? A brief look at what we have, existing maintenance activities and where the future might take us.
Russell Bolt, Senior Lines Engineer, Asset Management, Transpower
