Top six companies account for 68% of all products introduced since 1980; currently account for ~80% of all patents.

• Concentrated profile of spend in top 6 companies leads to opportunities:

− A small number of companies identify and develop a small number of potential leads in a new class.

− Opportunities to find alternatives in a class with innovative molecule design, comparable activity and freedom to operate.

The scientific process

CONFIDENTIAL 7

• To accelerate time-to-value for scientists, the ELN needs to be intuitive and easy to use. Data must be easy to enter, find and reuse with all experimental data and notes stored in a single location that can be accessed by everyone

• Informatics solutions have the ability to drive the productivity of the whole scientific process

Redag’s ELN Options

• The replacement of paper lab notebooks with ELNs requires not just the capital investment but also a shift in laboratory documentation policies and processes.

• It should provide appropriate systems for risk assessments which are managed and checked electronically.

• Good compliance and data recording to ensure high quality data is produced.

• The system is portable and easy to share with collaborators.

• Data is stored electronically, and archived which is advantageous for IP recording.

• Streamlining activities frees up time for conducting experiments, enabling scientists to be more efficient and that can lead to development of new products.

Decisions

• As a start up business it is a difficult decision to make as to what informatics tools to purchase.

• Are the scientific informatics solutions truly competitive?

• Once a business has made a decision to pick a certain provider, how easy is it to change informatics tools and export scientific data?

• Informatics providers should value loyalty and relationships with their customers, no matter what the size of the business is, don’t just look at the short term prospects of a business, look at the long term value!

• Creating a business case for senior managers and investors to consider informatics solutions is key.

• The informatics tools that are selected for a small business need to be “Fit for purpose” and have the ability to grow with the business when needed.

CONFIDENTIAL 9

Informatics Solutions for a small business

• At Redag Crop Protection several informatics tools were evaluated.

• The investment decision for management was weighed with the costs of employees and projects, and what benefits informatics solutions would bring to the company. (“Is this cost justified?” is a key question).

• Driving productivity and allowing the scientists to get on with the job is a key factor to consider.

• Informatics solutions that allow a small businesses to deliver high quality data and become competitive with larger companies will attract investment from collaborators.

• Implementation of the software needs to be quick and efficient. Small companies may not have IT experts on hand so installations need to accommodate for this.

• Greater clarity on what is available from the “configuration” of the software should be provided and what is classed as “customisation”.

• Share learning from other users on installation and customisations within these user group forums could be useful.

• How much of the ELN do businesses currently use? At Redag we evaluate we probably use 40% of the software, but as we grow we will create the value to the business by using more of the ELN and informatics solutions that we currently have with Perkin Elmer

Chemical Inventory

• A chemical inventory helps minimize the number and amount of chemicals stored, as well as minimize waste generation and control waste disposal costs.

• Real time chemical stock information and a system that is easy to use and manage is essential.

• Any time chemicals are in use, safety is an issue. In the event of an accident, the correct information needs to be available on the spot. A chemical inventory system should provide details about exactly what chemicals are available and where they are.

CONFIDENTIAL 13

Why are safety profiles in the inventory and ELN part of customisation? Surely every customer needs one? Share user templates?

Experiment Design

• Importing chemicals to ELN is efficient.

• Chemists can design experiments and

update procedures easily along with

attaching the corresponding analytical

data.

• Safety information is imported along with the corresponding location.

Incorporating data and Witnessing

• An experiment can have a selection of different section and fields.

• Analytical data can be uploaded, annotated and archived with the experiment.

• Witnessing can be performed electronically and an audit trail of the experiment can be provided.

• The experiment is then locked and can no longer be edited.

CONFIDENTIAL 15

Registration

• Registration of Redag samples can be conducted straight from the experiment.

• All Redag samples receive a unique Registration number, and multiple users can register compounds at the same time without confusion or duplication in registration IDs. All experiment information and data can then be linked back to the ELN.

• Compounds can then be viewed and data exported from the Registration client.

Data Visualisations in TIBCO Spotfire

CONFIDENTIAL 17

• Registration data can be exported and viewed in TIBCO Spotfire.

• Adoption of the ELN and streamlining processes does lead to increase in productivity.

Next Steps

• Extend the ELN to fully integrate all the biological data from the CRO.

• Use the ELN to extract data and assist in SAR evaluation in Spotfire TIBCO.

• Create data visualisation for collaborators to show real progress and enable the team to make strategic project decisions.

• Integrate tools and dashboards for data exploration and analysis.

• Better collaboration across multiple scientific disciplines.

• Improved knowledge management.

• As Redag Crop Protection grows as a small business we hope to be able to use the Perkin Elmer Informatics solutions to their potential and really get the most out of the products we have invested in.
