The Points System MVC keeps track of individual driving records

through a point system that assigns points to each traffic violation, moving or otherwise.

Two points will be added to driving records for offenses committed in states that belong to Interstate Compacts to which New Jersey belongs.

Up to 3 points will be subtracted from the driving record every 12 consecutive months a motorist is not convicted of an offense or suspended.

Motorist accumulating between 12 and 14 points in a 24 month period will receive a Notice of Scheduled Suspension by mail from MVC.

Driver License Restoration After a driver license is

restored, or after completion of the MVC Driver Improvement Program or a Probationary Driver School Program, a motorist will be on probation for one year.

During probationary period, drivers convicted of two or more moving violations totaling four or more points must enroll in the Probationary Driver School Program.

$100 dollar fee.

Vehicle Information New Jersey motorist must title and

register each vehicle before legally driving on public roads.

Registration documents must always be available to show law enforcement officers.

New state residents are required to title and register within 60 days of moving to New Jersey.

Vehicle Inspection All vehicles purchased new

after 2000 do not require inspection for four years.

After initial four year cycle, vehicles must be inspected every two years.

Vehicle with expired inspection sticker may result in fines of $100-$200, 30 day imprisonment, and the MVC may revoke registration privileges.

Used Cars Owners have the

option to take the vehicle for inspection within 14 days after the registration applies or accept the time left on the previous owner’s inspection sticker.

Insurance Liability auto

insurance is mandatory in New Jersey. Every vehicle registered in New Jersey must have liability insurance.

Driving an uninsured vehicle can result in fines, community service, license suspension, and insurance surcharges.

Graduated Driver License (GDL) New Jersey’s

Graduated Drivers License (GDL) program introduces driving privileges to first-time drivers and applicants under 21 years old.

Special Permit Restrictions Must be at least 16 years old. Must have signed guardian consent. Must be enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel driving

training course. An approved instructor must purchase the permit. Must pass MVC’s knowledge and vision test. Must have permit for 6 months. Must have supervising driver who is at least 21 years

old and has three years driving experience. Passengers must be from the same household, and 1

other person. The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts. No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.

Examination Permit Restrictions This is any resident

who is at least 17 years old.

All the same restrictions apply as special permit except, no driving between 12:01 and 5:00, and the driver does not have to complete behind-the-wheel instruction to receive permit.

Provisional Driver License Restrictions Passengers must be from the same household, and 1

other person. The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts. No driving between 12:01 pm and 5:00 am. Driver must be at least 17 years old. Must pass MVC’s road test. Must have license for 1 year. Basic Driver License Must be 18 years old Must have completed 1 year of unsupervised driving. Must pay required fee.
