    SKF Drive-up Method for

    accurate bearing mounting

    PULP & PAPER INDUSTRY

Contributes to increased productivity, reduced downtime andlower costs

    Benefts

Increases productivity bycontributing to bearing reliability

Reduces bearing mounting timeby simpliying the mountingprocess

Decreases costs by reducingmanpower and expenses or

    bearing replacement

    Typical applications

Calendar rolls, drive rolls, dryingcylinders, elt rolls, guide andstretch rolls, press rolls, suctionrolls, vacuum rolls, winder rolls, wire rolls, yankee cylinders

In the papermaking industry, where cap-ital costs are high and margins can berelatively low, keeping machines runningat maximum productivity is the key tomaintaining proftability. Machine uptimeis critical, as are maintenance efciency

and cost control. One cause o machine downtime is pre-mature bearing ailure. Oten, the rootcause o the ailure can be traced to in-correct mounting o the bearing. Commonproblems include fts that are too tight, which can cause the bearings to run hot,and fts that are too loose, which can leadto retting corrosion. When bearings ail, expensive downtime can result. Even i itdoes not, there are still costs associatedwith replacement to consider.

    Correct ft provides more reliableperormance

The SKF Drive-up Method oers a quick, easy and accurate hydraulic method omounting spherical roller and CARBtoroidal roller bearings on tapered seats.

Unique to SKF, this method helps toassure a correct ft and more reliablebearing perormance.

The technique utilizes an SKF hydraulicnut in the HMVE series (equipped witha dial indicator), and an SKF hydraulicpump (equipped with a high-accuracydigital pressure gauge). A specifc pressureespecially calculated or each bearingtype enables accurate positioning o thebearing at a starting point, rom whichthe axial drive-up is measured. By con-

trolling the axial drive-up rom this pre-determined position, an appropriate ftis achieved.

The SKF Drive-up Method has provento be 50% aster than traditional mountingmethods, such as using eeler gauges. In addition, unlike eeler gauges whichrequire expertise and experience, it isan easy method to use, and requires nospecial skills.

Paper maker achieves 510%ROI in one year using theSKF Drive-up Method

A paper mill was experiencing unevenand high bearing temperatures and pre-mature bearing ailures in their winder. The result was production downtime andsignifcant costs associated with repairs

and replacements. Upon investigation, itwas discovered that the mills mainten-ance sta were mounting bearings withhammers and were not achieving theappropriate internal bearing clearance. It was clear that the mill needed a solutionthat would help them mount and dis-mount bearings correctly and reducethe risk o seat damage during mounting.SKF proposed applying the SKF Drive-up

Method or accurate mounting. Over aperiod o one year, using this techniqueresulted in a signifcantly reduced needor bearing replacement, and an equallysignifcant decrease in mounting time.In act, the customer estimates thatmounting time has been reduced by 75%.The end result has been a considerablereduction in downtime and costs.
