DRISHTI The Hindu Society of Brazos Valley Newsletter (HSBVN) http://www.hsbv.org From Sir, With Love Dr. Rao has been the main force behind the establishment and advancement of the Hindu Society of Brazos Valley (HSBV). This is an excerpt from a newsletter printed by the HSBV in 1996, on the occasion of Ramanavami. Pearls of wisdom from Dr. Rao. RAMA ‐THE PURUSHOTTAMA Was Rama a real person or only a creation of mythology? Is he an avatar? Whatever the answer maybe, one thing is certain, Rama and Ramayana have profoundly influenced the thinking of people in India and around the world for many centuries. What makes Rama so unique. Why is he called the Purushottama (highest among beings)? The answer is found in the very beginning of Valmiki Ramayana, in the form of a question by Valmiki and an answer by Narada. “Is there anyone in the present day world who is full of virtues and at the same time possessed of great prowess and right conduct, who is well versed in dharma, who is grateful, truthful and of firm resolve? And who is friendly to all living beings; who is a man of knowledge and also powerful; who has a singularly lovable appearance, who has subdued his self and conquered anger, who is possessed of splendor and who is above fault finding and whom the very gods dread when his wrath has been provoked in battle” asked Valmiki. Narada replied, ”The virtues and qualities mentioned by you are many and rare to find. However, there is one born in the line of Ikshavaku and known by the name of Rama. He has his mind under control, is very powerful, radiant and resolute and has also his senses under control. He is intelligent and sagacious, eloquent, glorious and an exterminator of his enemies. With a broad chin and possessing a mighty bow and shapely shoulders, Rama is capable of subduing his foes. He has long arms and shapely head and forehead. He is of medium stature with well proportioned limbs and of charming complexion. With a well shaped chest and large eyes he has a body of attractive proportions. Well conversant with dharma, devoted to truth and always engaged in promoting the welfare of the people. Rama is of good repute and full of wisdom and pure in dealings. He has a well controlled and sharp mind. He is like the creator Brahma in supporting all, possessed of auspicious qualities and riches, slayer of enemies, protector of all living beings and dharma. He is well principled and protects his people. He knows the truth expounded in Vedas and vedangas and is adept in archery. He is well versed in the sciences and possessed of a bright intellect and good memory. He is gentle, noble and shrewd and loved by all”. “The righteous people always seek him just as the rivers seek the ocean. He is courteous to one and all and always well composed and pleasing. Endowed with all virtues he gladdens the heart of his mother. He is dignified and profound like the ocean and steadfast like the Himalayas. He is like Vishnu in prowess, soothing like the Moon, but when his anger is roused, he like wild fire. He is, however tolerant like Mother Earth. He is like Kubera in his liberality and steadfast like Lord Dharma (Yama)”‐Valmiki Ramayan. Where else can we find a better role model?

What’s Cooking?

Our temple celebrates every major pooja andwe are always treated to some wonderfulmaha‐prasadam. The food committee of HSBV

does such a great job of arranging the feastsevery time, but they are always looking forvolunteers.

How do they do it? Themembers of the food

committee call the volunteers and requestthem to cook the maha‐prasadam. For eachdish, typically 4 volunteers are requested to

cook enough food for about 50 people. Allmembers of our community come together tocreatethisgreatexperience.

Yoga, Music, and Harmony

BySrividyaRamasubramanian

Just like rhythm is essential to music, life toohasanatural rhythm. Whenall instruments inan orchestra play in synchrony, it is music.

When they are off‐beat and off‐tune, itbecomes noise. When our body, mind, andspirit are not aligned, there is disharmony and

stress. Yoga is the path throughwhichwe canexperienceharmony in lifeby theunionof thebody, mind, andsoul.

What exactly is yoga? It is not about bending

our bodies in convoluted ways. Rather, SagePatanjali defines yoga as “Yogas Chitta VrittiNirodah” in his famous Yoga Sutras. That is,

yoga is the control of the wandering mind. IntheBhagavadGita,LordKrishnadefinesyogaasbeingsteadfast inactionandbeingbalancedin

success and failure. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar callsyoga “the blossoming of human potential tofullness.”

For musical instruments to be in their best

shape, weneed to tune themregularly. In life,we can achieve harmony through the regular

and sincerepracticeof yogaasanas (postures),pranayama (breathing exercises) andmeditation.
