THE CULTURE OF SAFETYor 125 years, Garlock has been meeting the needs of both constructors and

users and has become a renowned and trusted partner for fluid sealing systems.

Through this extensive ex-perience, we have gained substantial knowledge of the processes that are becoming more and more critical to the chemical, petrochemical and phar-maceutical industries. This know-how enables our technicians to provide valuable support in the assessment of the most appropriate sealing option for any application.

With our headquarters in Palmyra (NY) and 22 sub-sidiaries around the world, Garlock offers a truly global service with the goal of making the world a cleaner and safer place. In pursuit of this mission, over the past decades Garlock has entered the

food sector, developing a line of products that comply with the appli-cable regulations (FDA, 3-A, EN1935/2004, USP class IV). These products offer solutions for the entire production process and take into account the special needs of the food industry, from major sugar refineries to delicate

cheese production. The use of GYLON, a PTFE material with unique dimensional sta-bility and elasticity prop-erties that derive from a special manufacturing process patented by Gar-lock, enables the individ-ual components to sup-port ever more complex CIP and SIP cycles. This

In the pharmaceutical and food processing industries, down time is not desirable. Sterilization cycles are carried out in the shortest possible time with high concentrations of the chemicals, high temperatures and increased flow through velocities. With these requirements the limits of the elastomer sealing properties are quickly reached. GYLON BIO-LINE offers a new sealing material for all temperatures and processes.

guarantees the hygiene of the production line at all times and prevents all kinds of contamination. The sanitary GYLON BIO-LINE seals, un-like seals made of rubber or virgin PTFE, do not extrude over the internal diameter once they have been fixed in the clamp or DIN connection, thus preventing any sign of fermentation. At the same time, the remarkable elas-ticity of the material pre-vents the connection from loosening due to tempera-ture changes.

Designed specially for dynamic applications, the PS-SEAL (shaft seals), KLOZURE (oil seals) and ISO-GARD product

families support high pe-ripheral speeds and small shaft misalignments, while ensuring low component wear and long service Life.

Our ONE-UP dia-phragm line was designed

for the most common pump models and com-bines the benefits of a one-component design - and the more convenient and easy installation that comes with it - with an increased elasticity and density that extend the average life span by up to three times.

drinks industry, ozone lives today a kind of new lease of life in the bever-ages industry, not only because it is used by new kinds of businesses such as wine-making and wine-producing, beer and fruit juices, but also because it is used and exploited for new applications or fol-lowing new methods.

Ozone is efficacious in different applications, such as: To improve organolep-

tic characteristics, like taste and odour of the water used to produce the beverages,

    To remove Iron and Manganese,

During CIP processes, especially during final rinsing, as to avoid sur-face contamination due to rinsing with non-ster-ile water (even if edible) and to prevent the wide-spread, from one point to another, of possible contamination that may have survived the dis-infection process,

Waste water treatment (COD, BOD reduction, sanitization),

Sanitization of steel, resin, cement tanks, and/ or barriques and

tonneaux, to prevent possible residues of chemicals from com-ing into contact with the beverages and get remarkable reduction of water consump-tion, reduction of water footprint, less running expenses and amount of water that flows to the purifier,

To fight the creation of biofilm along the pipes, with no risk of leaving traces of disinfectants or active principles.

Some research have highlighted that ozone can be used also in food tech-nologies, for instance, to make drinks or nutraceuti-cal products, to select the microflora present in raw materials and get benefits during the fermentation, to remove traces of pes-ticides and micro toxins from raw materials, says Cristian Carboni, research-er at De Nora-Food mar-ket applications.

PARKER P1D-C CYLINDERS OFFER RAPID CLEANING IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS

    NEWS

arker, the global leader in motion and control tech-nologies, has

launched its P1D-C Ultra Clean and P1D-C Pro Clean pneu-matic cylinders. Designed to eliminate retention areas such as recesses, grooves or pockets, the cylinders offer easy and quick cleaning for applications in harsh environments, thus providing users with reduced maintenance and downtime. The P1D-C Ultra Clean version comprises a tube profile made from anodised aluminium.

In effect, it offers four com-pletely smooth surfaces without traps to prevent any stagna-tion of impurities such as dirt and liquids from the cylinder body. The permanently sealed cylinder is thus ideal for ap-plications where hygiene and ease-of-cleaning are paramount, such as in the food and bever-age industry. The lubrication of the P1D-C cylinder range is made with Parkers proven, edible grease that offers food industry approval. The P1D-C Pro Clean version uses the same profile but one side has two slots to allow the embed-

ding of sensors for detecting limit switches the remaining three sides are smooth. The Pro Clean design was devised with applications such as pack-aging and conveying in mind. Both P1D-C cylinder types are available in diameters from 32 to 125 mm, and in stroke lengths up to 2800 mm. These quiet operation, corrosion and chemical resistant cylinders have been developed accord-ing to the dimensional standard ISO 15552 to ensure compli-ance internationally. Product versions are also made according to the ap-plications they are meant

for, upon which further variants such as particular paints, increased power, to name some but few, are proposed. All these versions combine to cre-ate a comprehensive and extended catalogue that is being constantly updated.

That is further reason why Mini Motor has decided to group its production into macro categories, as follows:

Motors and Coaxial Gear Motors: Asynchronous three-phase and single

phase motors with 2 or 4 poles from 9 to 740 W. Available in two sizes: 55 mm and 80 mm.

Worm screw gear mo-tors. Worm screw gear motors, available in four sizes: with c/c distance 20, 26, 32, 38. Reduc-tion ratios up to 475, torque up to 90 Nm (XCE 150 Nm).

Brushless gear motors and motors. Brushless 4-pole sinusoidal motors from 32 to 880 W, with

torque from 0.085 to 2.4 Nm. Planetary reduction units with reduction ratios up to 49 and torque up to 95 Nm. Worm screw re-duction units with reduc-tion ratios up to 80 and torque up to 9 Nm.

BLDC and Drivers. 230 Vac drives for brushless and asynchronous mo-tors, with and without feedback for power rat-ings up to 750 W. 24/48

Vdc brushless motors and gear motors with integrated drive with ab-solute, multiturn encoder and range bus; power ratings up to 500 W.

Customization: the added value Mini Motor added value can be seen in its capacity of going beyond standard offer and provide ad-hoc products that can truly meet peculiar require-ments such as size, chal-

lenging application, extreme temperature conditions, etc.

Owing to a potentially endless application field and market asking for in-creasingly customized and differentiated products, this skill turns out quite strategic as to be able to meet any requirement in real time and keep un-changed all the privileges of Mini Motor absolute quality.

ittle attention is often paid to surfaces in any metal materi-al, provided that we need to solve cleaning and hygiene problems related to good aesthetics. Yet, the impor-tance that surface finish may have, especially if in stainless steel, is as different as the variety of applications that these materials may have in various industrial environ-ments, and in this case, in the agri-food plants sector. For these kinds of plants, you need to enhance the peculiar features of stain-less steel, such as corrosion resistance, hygiene, surface smoothness, etc, for which superficial treatments, non mechanic but chemical, are often carried out. Electro-polishing is a surface finish chemical technique through which metal is removed elec-trolytically, ion by ion, from

During his first 40 years of activity, Giulio Raio-las company establishes itself as leader manu-

facturer of processing equipment for the can-ning industry, namely tomato and peach processing. In the early 90s Mr Raiola develops the first models of his peeler for apples, pears, citrus and kiwis, besides fruit cutters and other pieces of equipment that allow him to ex-pand the compa-

nys core business to the whole fruit-processing industry, including the then-emerging sector of fresh-cut fruit products. In 2009, Maurizio Mor-rone takes over his grandfathers business and, besides developing the existing production range, he enhances re-

    search and design-ing activities with

the aim of applying his own and his staff s know-how to vege-table process-

n the beverage in-dustry, the automatic washing of recycled bottles has now reached a high level

of specialization. In this context, works AKO-MAG, company located in Soragna (PR), able to offer a varied production, which includes bottle washing machine, rinsing machine, sterilizers for glass or PET bottles, crate washer and accessories to comple-ment. Very large is the choice of the washer, the potential of which obvi-

ously varies in base at the model, and the ranges it is from 100 to 60.000 bph.

The modular structure of all installations allows to gradually increase the functions and the level of sophistication, including special washing sections and sanitizing, automatic control of process param-eters, security systems, en-ergy recovery, reduction of discharges and automatic sanitization of the parties most important from the point of view of hygiene.

Start the washingAt low production ca-pacity, the range offer GENESI, available in very small dimensions in order to be inserted in any operating environment. Designed under the indica-tion of the producers with low production capacities, the series has a simple but functional washing cycle, which lowers operating costs (water, energy, deter-gent) without negatively affecting cleaning bottles to recycle, the complete removal of the labels and their total evacuation out-side. The particular ease of use and maintenance, increases productivity and reduces downtime. The modularity of the GENESI series allows at the customer to build a machine to measure , adapting it from time to time to different types of use (water, wine, oil, beer, soft drinks).Constructed in accordance with the Machinery Direc-

stop the machine in case of overload; spray pumps with casing and impel-ler made in stainless steel AISI 316 and protective filters; valves for emptying the waste paper and spray tanks; control panel ad-justable, made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator; setting and con-trol of all the machine by touch-screen. This are the main amenities that characterize the series. The GENESI machine is also arranged for the intro-duction of detergent and liquid additives in the bath and in the detergent tank, disinfectants and other products in the spraying

tanks. Internal spraying (made with self-cleaning rotating nozzles) and ex-ternal high pressure spray-ing are easily removable for routine cleaning and maintenance. The loading and unloading of bottles is completely automatic, and perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain.

Dry cycleTo streamline the washing cycle , the company has re-alized the HYDRA series, a series of fully automatic machines which comprise a first station for empty-ing the bottles followed by pre-washing spraying and first pre-maceration bath. This configuration

helps to reduce the pollu-tion of the detergent bath and reduce fuel consump-tion. The triple station for labels extracting ensures their complete detachment from used bottles, while the rotating filter displaced over the entire width of the machine ensures the evacuation outside. The bottle washing is complete with indoor and outdoor spraying, which occurs with high-pressure cleaner distributed with rotating nozzles self-clean-ing and self-centering. To complete rinsing, however, ensure the phase abate-ment alkalinity followed by spraying with external and internal water network.

Built according to the Machinery Directive (CE) also, the series has a dif-ferent predispositions that increase safety, including:sensors for slowing down and eventually stopping the machine in case of failure or obstruction of bottles on conveyor; de-tergent introduction and liquid additives in the bath and other products in spray tanks; the automatic loading and unloading of the bottles is perfectly syn-chronized with the move-ment of the main chain; the economizer valve for the water network and the automatic control of the presence of water on the last rinsing station.Other amenities are im-

portant, as:automatic resetting of the chutes for loading and unloading bottles from the control panel; grouped grease; electronic variable speed with remote con-trol (inverter); setting and control of all the machine by touch-screen; self-centering and self-cleaning rotating spray at high pressure; external spray-ing easily removable for cleaning and maintenance; valves for emptying baths and spraying tanks; control panel made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the op-erator. At the bottles un-loading are arranged safety guards and dust protec-

Very high produc-tivity and automation in the wash meet in the HP model in the same series. Despite the sophistication, just an operator to remote-ly manage the entire wash cycle, verifying operation via control systems. The tubes of external wash-ing are constructed so as to reduce maintenance to a minimum. But in case it will be necessary, the dis-mantling and cleaning are very simple. The regulation of the temperature in the tanks is automated through

a modulating propor-tional pneumatic system, which offers a guarantee of accuracy and safety of operation. The main mo-tor, oversized, ensures a long lasting efficiency by minimizing the mechanical wear. The electronic vari-able frequency allows to manage the main engines installed in HYDRA HP series via remote control. The automatic press for the collection of labels evacuated from the deter-gent bath is full of a recov-ery system of the detergent solution that accumulates in the pressing phase.

AKOMAG has dedicated several years to the creation of bottle washing ma-

chines and the high quality standard achieved by all its production, advanced tech-nology and timely after-sales service, has allowed at this company to come in several primary and manu-facturing with the certainty of having created a safe machinery and Quality for Various needs. This undertaking was given by all its facilities, from de-sign to engineering, from the search for the most innovative materials to the constant testing of the products in the works.

With this AKOMAG mis-sion, every day thought to be better and invest in quality, with the knowledge to do a good job.

    he market of fruit juice

is developing quite rapidly and the share

    of NFC juices is considerably

increasing because of their high qual-ity. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth poten-tial. Of particular im-portance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are pre-pared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grape-fruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orange-pineapple, car-

rot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popu-lar.

The main hints for the design of a plant pro-cessing fresh fruit into chilled juices are:

    Optimization of flow of fruit/juice

Optimization of characteristics of pro-cess equipment

Optimization of processing cycles in order:

    1. Decrease process-ing times2. Minimize oxidation of the juice3. Keep high organ-olectic characteristics

Optimize CIP system to control the micro-biology of the juice.

Some of the machines used for the applica-tion are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance:

    - Dedicated citrus juice extractors (orange,

ITHE VERSATILE LINER FOR UNRESTRICTED OPERATION

gus offers Tribo-Tape, the tribological self-lubricating liner, highly resistant to wear. The tape is used where

necessary to reduce the fric-tion of moving surfaces, for even more smooth sliding, silent and without any need of maintenance. The strips are easy to cut - just use simple scissors - and can be glued. The tribological tape Tribo-Tape is also available on request with glue for even faster installation. With a thickness of only 0.5 mm, the space required remains very low, even for rear applications.

    Developed for different surfaces and shapes in order to reduce friction during the sliding, it is available from stock cutted by the meter, or as figures in various forms.Currently it is available in three different materials, all self-lubricating. Tribo-Tape B160, is the standard ver-sion of black color and has excellent abrasion resistance;

a variant approved FDA & EC is the Tribo-Tape A160, blue, it is cheap toot and has a high resistance to wear. The more powerful version is the Tribo-V400 Tape, it resists to chemicals and temperatures up to + 200 C. We are developing

other materials and tapes with even smaller thicknesses - please contact us!

THE LEES STOP FILTER AND THE OTHER INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS INTRODUCED BY VLS TECHNOLOGIES AT SIMEI 2015

ould you give us a brief overwiev on VLS Tech-

    nologies?What I usually

say to make people briefly understand who we are is that VLS Technologies is the new technological part-ner for liquid processingwith a 30-years experience on it! With that I mean that, from our perspec-tive, it is possible to match both innovation/ fresh-ness and experience and, at the end of the day, this is what we try to do; even if our expertise dates back to 1985, we try everyday to build innovative forms of partnership with our

customers so to try to be a twentieth century Brand that acts on the global market with proposals that can have a deep effect on our customers productive processes so to make them more efficient and improve performances.

How have you evolved since 1985?Everything began with my father, Mr. Giovanni Velo, who set the bases of our Company thanks to his creativity and experience in the sector. The production of housings and micro-filtration plants started in 1987 already. The 90s were synonimous with strong worldwide commercial

expansion both in EU and in extra-European countries and in 2002 the second generation, represented by me and my brother Tom-maso, entered the Com-pany. I believe that now VLS represents the costant innovation in the sector; a Company that, regard-less of current economic conditions, made strong investments, doubling up the employers and acquir-ing solid competence in the sector of liquid processing. Important investments have been done in research and development during the last two years and the technical solutions int
