CONNECTING YOUR MACHINE TO THE POWER SUPPLY: (230V)To eliminate the possibility of an electric shock your machine has been fitted with a BSapproved, non rewireable moulded plug and cable which incorporates a fuse, the valueof which is indicated on the pin face of the plug. Should the fuse need to be replaced an

approved BS1362 fuse must be used of the same rating, marked thus .The fuse cover is detachable, never use the plug with the cover omitted. If a replacementfuse cover is required, ensure it is of the same colour as that visible on the pin face of theplug (i.e. red). Fuse covers are available from your Draper Tools stockist. If the fitted plug is not suitable, it should be cut off and destroyed. *The end of the cableshould now be suitably prepared and the correct type of plug fitted. See below.

*WARNING:A plug with bare flexible wires exposed is hazardous if engaged in a live power socketoutlet.

WARNING YHIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.The mains lead is coloured Green and Yellow-Earth, Blue-Neutral & Brown-Live. As thesecolours may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals inyour plug, proceed as follows. The wire which is coloured green and yellow must beconnected to th terminal in your plug marked with the letter ‘E’ or by the earthsymbol or coloured green or green and yellow. The wire which is coloured bluemust be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter ‘N’ or black or blue. The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is markedwith the letter ‘L’ or coloured red or brown.

1. This drill press is intended for useonly with drill bits. The use of anyother accessories may be hazardous.

2. CHECK to see that the drill bit issecurely locked in the chuck.

3. CORRECT DRILLING SPEEDSImportant factors which determine thebest speed to use in any drill pressoperation are:(a) The smaller the drill the greater

the required r.p.m. (revolutionsper minute)

(b) In soft materials the speed shouldbe higher than for hard materials.

4. MAKE sure that the chuck key isremoved before turning on power.

5. CHECK to see that the chuck issecurely fastened to the spindle.

6. CAUTIONWhen practical, use a vice or clampsto secure workpiece to avoidworkpiece rotating with the drill bit.

7. SECURE the tool to a workbench orfloor. If during operation there is anytendency for the drill press to tip over, slide or walk on the supportingsurface, the drill base must be securedto the supporting surface withfasteners through the holes located inthe drill press base.

SPINDLE SPEEDSSixteen spindle speeds of: 190, 275, 300, 380,450, 465, 535, 630, 685, 690, 1210, 1320, 1400,1830, 1945 and 2680rpm are available withyour drill. The highest speed is obtained whenthe belt is on the largest step of the motorpulley and the smallest step of the spindlepulley as shown in Fig. 13.

CHANGING SPEEDS AND ADJUSTINGBELT TENSION1. Disconnect the drill press from the powersupply.2. Lift up the belt and pulley guard ✪✌ Fig. 14.

3. Release the belt tension by looseninglocking knob ✫✌ Fig. 15 and moving tensionlever ✬✌.4.With the belts slack, position the two belts✭✌ on the desired steps of the motor, centre

and spindle pulleys for the correct speed asshown in Fig. 15.

5. After the belt is positioned on the desiredsteps of the pulleys, move the tension leveruntil motor is under tension and the belt isproperly tensioned. Tighten tension lock knob✮✌ Fig. 16. The belt should be just tight

enough to prevent slipping. Excessive tensionwill reduce the life of the belts, pulleys andbearings. Correct tension is obtained whenthe belts ✯✌ can be flexed about 25mm out ofline midway between the pulleys using lightfinger pressure.

1. Disconnect the drill press from the powersupply.2. Loosen the nut ✸✌ slightly. Do not removenut ✸✌ from shaft ✹✌.

3.While firmly holding spring housing ✺✌Fig. 22 pull out housing and rotate it until theboss ✻✌ is engaged with the next notch onthe housing. Turn the housing anticlockwiseto increase and clockwise to decrease springtension. Then tighten the nut to hold thehousing in place.

IMPORTANT:Nut ✼✌ Fig. 22 should not contact springhousing when tight.

DRILLING HOLES TO DEPTHWhere holes are to be drilled to exactly thesame depth, a depth stop is provided in thepinion shaft housing and is used as follows:1. Loosen lock handle ✾✌ Fig. 23 and rotatehousing ✽✌ until the pointer ✿✌ lines up withthe depth you wish to drill on the scale ❀✌.Then tighten lock handle ✾✌.2. The following directions will give the inexperienced operator a start on common drill pressoperations. Use scrap material for practice to get the feel of the machine before attemptingregular work.CORRECT DRILLING SPEEDSFactors which determine the best speed to use in any drill press operations are:Type of material being worked,Size of hole,Type of drill or other cutter,Quality of cut desired. The smaller the drill, the greater the required r.p.m. In soft materials the speed should behigher than for hard materials.DRILLING METALUse clamps to hold the workpiece when drilling in metal. The workpiece should never beheld in the hand; the drill may snatch the workpiece at any time, especially when breakingthrough. If the workpiece is twisted out of the operator’s hand, they may be injured. The workpiece must be clamped firmly while drilling; any tilting, twisting or shifting resultsnot only in a rough hole, but also increases drill breakage. For flat work, lay the workpieceon a wooden base and clamp it firmly down against the table to prevent it from moving. Ifthe workpiece is of irregular shape and cannot be laid flat on the table, it should be securelyblocked and clamped using vee-blocks, clamps or a machine vice.
