The function machine…

Suppose there is a function (machine) that takes numbers and transforms them…

Consider the function f(x) that does this:f(0) = 0f(1) = 2f(2) = 4f(3) = 6What is the function? What does the graph of

the function look like?

(49.) Function, (50.) Input, and (51.) Output**

Function: A relationship between input and output. A function takes an input (the independent variable) and returns an output (the dependent variable).

Input: The independent variable of a function. It is the x–coordinate, and is plotted on the x-axis.

Output: The dependent variable of a function. It is the y-coordinate and is plotted on the y-axis

Graphing Functions*• Functions are graphed on horizontal and

vertical axes.• The independent variable is the input of a

function and is graphed on the horizontal axis or x-axis and is called the x-coordinate

• The dependent variable is the output of a function and is graphed on the vertical axis or y-axis and is called the y-coordinate.

• Ordered pairs are used to represent one input/output pair. The first number corresponds to the input and the horizontal axis. The second number corresponds to the output and the vertical axis.

Graphs

A graph is two dimensional

• The point (0,0) called the Origin**

• Each axis should be labeled

• To graph an ordered pair, first find the first number on the horizontal axis (right to left). Then find the second number on the vertical axis (up and down).

(52.) Relation, (53.) Domain, and (54.) Range**

Relation: A set of ordered pairs.

Domain: The set of all inputs (the first numbers) of a relation. (all of the independent variables)

Range: The set of all the outputs (the second numbers) for a function.

The domain gives us all the possible values for the horizontal axis. The range gives us all the possible values for the vertical axis.

(55.) Discrete Function, (56.) Continuous Function**

Discrete Function: A graph whose points are disconnected.

Continuous Functions: A function whose graph is a line or a curve.
