Driggers Days   ndrew and Anne Sims were welcomed to the Scripture dedication for the Ketengban New Testament by a crowd of hundreds of men and women. Each man and woman were in celebratory dress with feathered headdresses, some with bones in their noses, and others with plugs in their ear lobes. These hundreds were brandishing bows and arrows, hooting, chanting, and dancing around the Sims. The tribe honored the Sims for the eleven years they had invested translating the Bible into the Ketengban language. The Sims were amazed. They were also a bit confused when they noticed a group of eight or so young men covered in white mud standing quietly to the side of the crowd. The elders of the tribe explained that the young men represented the Ketengban before they had the Scriptures. They were silent and somber to represent the lives of the whole group before they understood God’s Word. The Ketengban elders explained that before they had the Bible in their language they were like: “dead men walking; not knowing God or His Son; living in guilt and fear and in constant warfare; always under the power of the evil spirits; and terrified.”  The elders also explained the celebrating crowd. They said, “Now we are alive in Christ and free from our dark past. We are insiders, part of God’s familyno longer outsiders silently watching from afar. We don’t want to forget how God has changed us.” In Deuteronomy 4:9 Moses told the Israelites: “But watch out! Be careful never to forget what you yourself have seen. Do no t let these memories escape from your mind as long as you live!” Like the Ketengban, our family knows the power of the Scriptures. God’s Word changes lives. It has transformed ours and lead us to serve the Lord through service with Wycliffe. As we continue to transition our lives we also hold tightly to the memories God has given us. We praise Him for His faithfulness and greatly anticipate how He will continue to fulfill the promises in His Word.
