FIRST IPL QUESTION

George Washington loved animals. My paper is about his love for animals. How do I fit animals into his presidency?

Hello from the ipl2!

Thank you for your question on George Washington and his love for animals. Since you did not mention what grade you are in, I have found a couple of books you can refer to and a couple of websites that will show that breeding animals and livestock was another vital interest of the First American President.

(1) I first found the answer at a website maintained by The National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance (NCBLA), called Our White house

http://www.ourwhitehouse.org/houndsandmules.html

This website tells us that the father of our country was involved in the breeding of hounds and mules. It names his 20 canine companions and gives a short account of his involvement in the breeding of the mules.

To find this site I used the search engine

http://www.google.com/

and typed “George Washington’s Pets” in the search box.

The above website is about the book

“Our White House: looking in, looking out”.

For illustrations of Washington’s hounds and more information you can refer to it. The book is available at your local library as well as many other libraries in your library system.

http://catalog.mainlib.org/

(2) I found another book describing an incident about George Washington and a lost dog during the American Revolution. I used the “MAIN library catalog”

http://catalog.mainlib.org/

Page 2: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

To find the book I typed the words – ‘George Washington and dog’ – in the search box, then clicked on – ‘Words or Phrases’. The Title of the book is

George Washington and the General’s dog; author Frank Murphy

The book is available at your local library and a few other libraries in your library system. Please contact -- Morristown and Morris Township Library, 1 Miller Road, Morristown, NJ 07960, Phone: 973-538-6161 to reserve it.

(3) And here is another source which tells about his love of horses. It also says that, it was George Washington who introduced the mule to American agriculture. This is the website of his estate and gardens, Mount Vernon.

http://www.mountvernon.org/learn/explore_mv/index.cfm/pid/284/

(4) Additionally, Mount Vernon site introduces us to his farm animals and suggests that he raised sheep, hogs, chicken, turkey and ducks. He also introduced the Milking Devon Cattle, an English breed, to his herd.

http://www.mountvernon.org/learn/collections/index.cfm/pid/194/

I found the above two sites by using the Google search engine

http://www.google.com/

and typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched for ‘Horses’ and found the ‘site content’. There, the links ‘Stable, Mule Shed & Paddock’ and ‘Heritage Breed Animals’ led me to the above websites.

I hope the above sources will be helpful with your paper! Please contact us again if you need more help. Thank you for using the Internet Public Library.

by Deepti Dutta ([email protected]

This was the first IPL question I answered and I spent a lot of time trying to make sure it met the standards of ipl2 and the articles met the needs of the patron. On an average I spent three to four hours working on each question and looking for reliable sources which could be easily accessed by the patron.

I probably spent the most amount of time on this question which did not appear too difficult at first. Since this was my first question, I opened a word document with the internet browser and recorded each step of my search (so I could list steps of my searching technique for the patron – which proved to be very time consuming.) Often I lost track of my search and had to retrace the steps which led me to other sources altogether.

I started by searching ipl2 kids for the key word ‘George Washington’ George Washington : Father of Our Country   More information about George's life America's Library Search Search library of congress (keyword- ‘George Washington’) "Introduction"to The Diaries of George Washington http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/4gwintro.html

Page 4: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

The resulting article was very detailed for a school project. I was very tempted to cut and paste the relevant information from the article and give it to the patron. Now that I knew what to look for, I tried searching for the same information elsewhere.

Now I came up with keywords I used in the rest of my searches in Google - ‘George Washington’s pets’ and ‘George Washington and dog’ which helped me find two books. I searched for those books in the patron’s library system and suggested him/her to contact the library.

Overall I was satisfied with my answer. As an afterthought I could have posted my initial result from the Library of Congress Index and left it for the patron to decide if the information was too much for him/her.

SECOND IPL QUESTION

Question:I have been asked to form an opinion on the planned Google Books Search program (if it gets through the current lawsuit). I want to know, what is the difference between the service that will be offered to patrons through the single public library terminal that Google Book Search will offer, and the Google Books Search that users will be able to access from their home computers? Maybe it is the printing capability, or the full-view capability (for some kinds of works), or the capability to download the books - I'm not sure if these features will be available when the user searches Google Books on his or her own computer.

Hello from the ipl2!

Thank you for your question about Google Books and access totheir databases by different institutions and persons. I havefound a few sources which will direct you to Google’s commitmentsand also help you to form an opinion about this program.

(1) The first source is the website of American LibraryAssociation (ALA)

http://wo.ala.org/gbs/

This website directs you to various official documents related toGoogle Books Settlement including a ‘Super Simple Summary’. Youcan access the document from the ALA website or use the followinglink.

This document tells about the results of the settlement. It alsolists who can obtain access to Google’s Book database, how muchand how.

(2) Another document also found at the American LibraryAssociation which may help you form an opinion about this projectis ‘Google Book Settlement Slide Deck’. You can access thedocument from the ALA website or use the following link.

This document highlights the main points of the Original Project, the legal liability and Settlement. It also describes Google’sobligations, revenues sharing and benefits and criticism ofsettlement.

I found the above two documents while scanning through variousarticles in the Library, Information Science and TechnologyAbstracts database. You can also find it using the search engineGoogle

http://www.google.com/

and typing ‘Google Book Settlement’ in the search box. The engineprompts you to pick ‘Google book settlement ala’, so click on it.

(3) And here is another article, “Google gives out-of-print booksa new life online”, from the New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/05/technology/05iht-05google.19082002.html?scp=3&sq=%22google%20books%22%20and%20%22out%20of%20print%22&st=cse

This article speaks positively about the whole project, “Google'sbook search allows you to look for things that would be verydifficult to search for otherwise" and “Google was likely to sellat least half of the books for $5.99 or less” I found thisarticle on the New York Times website.

http://www.nytimes.com

I typed "google books" and "out of print" in the search box. Thesearch resulted in many other interesting articles which you canrefer to.

I hope the above sources will be helpful with your paper! Pleasecontact us again if you need more help. Thank you for using theInternet Public Library.

It took me 2-3 hours to find good sources for this questionThis was a very interesting question and I learned a lot about Google Books Settlement. I started my search in the LISTA database and found a few articles which enlightened me and further pointed me to other resources.

The following article quoted a link to NY Times which proved very helpful--

Title: Books, Books, Books: Going, Going, Google.By: Quint, Barbara. Information Today, Feb2009, Vol. 26 Issue 2, p7-8, 2p; (AN 36344103)Database: Library, Information Science & Technology AbstractsFull Text available

The Cash Factor

Meanwhile, Google has already begun selling digital access to publisher-approved in-print books. According to a New York Times article (www.nytimes.com/2009/01/05/technology/internet/05google.html?ref=technology), the price for access to searchable books for an individual is about $5.99 or less. "In 2007, Macmillan estimated that Google helped sell about 16,400 copies," according to the article.

Then I tried to search the NY Times for that particular article (so I could direct the patron directly to that instead of the article in the LISTA as patron might not have access to it) but couldn’t find the exact article. I managed to get a similar article which I quoted in my answer.

The following article pointed me to another important source –

wo.ala.org/gbs

which led me to explore the ALA site and I found important information regarding the Settlement

Google Book Search Settlement Guide Released. American Libraries, Jan/Feb2010, Vol. 41 Issue 1/2, p10-10, 1/3p; (AN 47586218) Database: Library, Information Science & Technology

“The guide, written by legal consultant Jonathan Band, is available as a PDF file at wo.ala.org/gbs. It notes that the amended settlement agreement (ASA) significantly reduces the scope of the settlement because it excludes most books published outside of the United States.”

I was satisfied by the information I found on the ALA website and hoped that the patron was too. I could have listed the articles I found in LISTA as a part of my answer and let

Page 8: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

the patron explore the databases in his library. But since the ‘need by’ date was the day I was writing to him/her, I tried to make things easy.

When I looked at the question I couldn’t believe my luck, “such an easy question”. I claimed it without looking at the requirements. But this one turned out to be not so easy, as the 5th grader did not want a web resource stating the answer. I would have been more time efficient if I could simply hand him/her the recipe, but that would be against the rules of ipl2 so I looked for ‘Trail mix recipes’ in Google Books suitable for a 5 th grader and searched his/her library catalog for the books. After 5-6 hours of searching, I was able to find 5 books in the patron’s library. I also listed the link of the Google Books and the page number for patron’s convenience. After this question I vowed to read the questions more carefully before claiming them. I wasn’t sure if un-claiming the question would affect my grade so didn’t want to do it too often.

FOURTH IPL PROJECTQuestion:Who published a book first on the low carb. diet. in 1972? Dr.Robert Atkin or Dr. Sam Berman? Sam Berman published a book named The Boston Policemen's Diet in 1972 in the same year that Dr.Atkin also published his. But who did it first? Thanks!

Hello from IPL2, Your question on the two low carbohydrate diet books which werepublished in the same year, exposed me to the field ofcataloging. I learned a lot of new things in the process oflooking for your answer, so thank you.

From various sources which I am going to list below, I concludedthat Sam S. Berman’s “The Boston Police diet and weight controlprogram” was published before Robert C. Atkins’ book “Dr Atkins’diet revolution: the high calorie way to stay thin forever’

1) I began my search at the Library of Congress catalog at

http://catalog.loc.gov/

The ‘author’ search for ‘Robert C Atkins’ revealed 19 works byhim. The title of the book published in 1972 was ‘Dr. Atkins’diet revolution; the high calorie way to stay thin forever [by]Robert C. Atkins. Recipes and menus by Fran Gare and HelenMonica.’

http://lccn.loc.gov/72075458

2) And the book by Sam Berman which you found, was also listedthere.

Page 12: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

Again I used the author name ‘Sam Berman’ to reveal his words. The Library of Congress is a great source to search for books.

3) The following link at Amazon.com shows the Publishing historyof the Atkins book,

http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Atkins-Diet-Revolution-Robert/dp/0553271571

when you click on the link ‘Search inside this book’ or use thefollowing link, you will see the publishing history of the book.

10: Set STATUS to ANSWERED Sat, 06 Feb 2010 10:49:38 by Deepti Dutta ([email protected])

This question was the highlight of my ipl experience. I will never forget it. I barely made to 24 hour limit to answer it. I spent more than 8-10 hours researching this question. Later on I used this question for email, chat and telephone reference. It was a great learning experience and I was exposed to so many different sources.

I started by looking for the books in the Library of Congress catalog.

Then I read about ISBN numbers and if they had anything to do with the date or year of publishing.

http://www.isbn.org/Standards/Home/isbn/us/isbnqa.asp

then I read about MARC records and if they tell the date.

http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/

I also looked up how the LCCN are assigned,

http://lccn.loc.gov/marc

http://www.loc.gov/marc/lccn_structure.html#number

I got two books from my local library about the use of MARC records in libraries and tried to interpret the MARC records of the above two books.

The book by Sam S Berman is titled 'Boston Police Dietand weight control program' It's LC Control No is 72080677

the MARC record field 008 shows

And the book by Dr Atkins is 'Dr Atkins' diet revolution"It's LC Control no is 72075458

the MARC record field shows

Page 14: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

Since I haven’t taken a Cataloging course yet, I asked for help from the IPL2 librarian/volunteer to verify my findings. But the help came too late. By then I found some other sources which I listed in my answer. I was surprised to find that most experienced librarians whom I consulted on the quest to finding the answer to this question did not know how to interpret the MARC records or maybe they don’t use it too often.I tried to answer the question to the best of my ability but still would like an authoritative source to confirm my findings.

FIFTH IPL QUESTION

Question:Do you have anything on battery's.

Hello and greeting from ipl2,

Thank you for your question about the batteries. I gather fromyour question that you want to obtain more information aboutthem. Since your question is not very specific and you have notmentioned your grade level, I am listing the following resourceswhich would tell you what is a battery, how it works and how arethey classified.

1) Here is a website from PBS (Public Broadcasting Service)describes how a regular battery which is bought at the checkoutcounter works.

I looked for a couple of good resources before I claimed this question as this was a very vague question and I would have to cover a lot of ground to answer it. In order to avoid too much back and forth, I wanted to list as much information for the patron before I asked him/her to elaborate the question further. As the patron did not come back with more questions I am assuming that I covered the topic s/he was interested in.

Page 17: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

It took me 3-4 hours to search for good sources for this question also. I tried to look for ‘.edu’ sites to quote with the answers.I wasn’t sure if the site “how stuff works” would be considered as an authoritative sourcehttp://electronics.howstuffworks.com/battery.htmLater I found it listed under the category “Other Interesting Tools” in the Resource list given to us during the beginning of the term. So I could have listed it in my answer too.

SIXTH IPL QUESTION

This was also a tricky question as I wasn’t sure what grade level it was required for and to what detail I had to explain the answer. So I covered as much information as I could and hoped that the patron would come back if more information was required. Again I referred to ‘.edu’ , ‘.gov’ or government based organizations for answers. It took me 3-4 hours to look for information and I cited 7 sources to cover all the relevant information. Here again I would have liked to explore “how things work”. But since the patron did not come back asking for more information, I assume s/he was satisfied with the results.

SEVENTH IPL QUESTION

Question:i would like to know there was a law during/before the French revolution called the law of the maximum. i would like to know everything about it including the date it was written and by whom and other such information.

Hello and greetings from ipl2.

I thank you for your question on the French Revolution and the

Page 20: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

Law called “law of maximum” which placed a ‘“maximum price” ongrain’. And finally, on September 29 1793, the law of “GeneralMaximum” was passed, which placed all commodities of “primarynecessity” under the price control regulation.

I have found a few resources which will list the dates of whenthey were formed and when repealed. The account from HillsdaleCollege states that representative of the Committee ofAgriculture and Commerce, Boudin recommended that a ``maximumprice'' be placed on grain. I hope you find the resources helpfulfor your project.

1. The Public Broadcasting Service(PBS) states that on “May 4,1793: Price controls, known as “the maximum,” are established forgrain”, and on September 29, 1793, Law of the general maximum wasintroduced to control prices and regulate wages and on December24, 1794: Wage control and price control laws are repealed.

The timeline can be found in the links “Revolution Enemies1792-1793”, “Reign of Terror 1793-1794” and “Aftermath 1794-1799”on the left on the page.

I found this website using the ipl2 homepage and typing ‘French’in the search box and on further exploring the site thatresulted.

6: Re: HIS: Need information about the Law of Maximum from the French Revolution (no need by) (sent to patron) Tue, 16 Feb 2010 18:33:50

by Deepti Dutta ([email protected]

This question took some time to answer (3 to 4 hours) as I wasn’t aware of what to look for. I found more information about it in various sources before I started to look for more authoritative (.edu) sources. I searched for key word ‘Law of Maximum’ and ‘General maximum’

http://www.viswiki.com/en/General_maximum

http://www.history.com/topics/maximilien-de-robespierre

I also searched for French Revolution and read some more about it.

I also found a website http://www.marxists.org/archive/bax/1917/01/maximum.htmI was unsure if it was authoritative enough to be quoted, so I did not quote it in my final answer.

I could have looked for books in the reference/footnote section of the wikis above and suggested them to the patron.

REACTIONSI realized the importance of IPL when I myself had to use e-mail reference for

the class assignment. I appreciated the work and effort which was involved in answering those reference questions.

Page 23: Drexel University Information Technologydd537/eport/documents/IPL_l… · Web viewand typing the word ‘George Washington’ in the search box. At the estate’s website I Searched

The transactions would have been different in case of chat or in-person reference because, these are like ‘two way streets’, where the librarian can ask the patron to elaborate on his/her question and needs and receive a feedback about the answer in real time. These form of references would be more time efficient.

In email reference, the back and forth of emails can take a lot of time. In order to avoid wasting time, I tried to cover a lot of ground for answering the questions which were not very specific. This took much more time and effort at my end than if I knew what exactly the patron was looking for. Although the questionnaire to be filled by the patron required them to specify if the request was for school, most questions did not specify the grade level. So there again I felt obligated to cover the topic from elementary grade to high school level.

Email reference is great if there were no time constrains. I was under no pressure to hand over the answer to the patron there and then. I spent a lot of time researching for good answers and relevant resources; especially because I had never performed reference before and did not know where to look for the answers to a question. This wouldn’t have been possible if I had to answer the question in real time. As some of my classmates suggested, if there could be a chat tool linked to the email reference, the librarian could ask the patron to specify his needs and then get back to him/her via email. That would be the best of both worlds.

I would prefer to answer email reference questions before I have to do in-person or chat-reference. It would give me enough time to look for good answers while improving my skill at searching for them. I do prefer well researched answers via email reference, than providing quick and dirty reference via chat or in-person interviews.

In ‘ipl2’ I had the option of picking my own questions and I steered away from the ones which I had no idea how to answer. In real life I would not have this option and here again I would like to have some time to research the topic and get back to the patron via email.

The IPL project was a great learning experience. It was almost addicting. If I didn’t have other class work to do, I could have worked on questions one after the other. It gave me a sense of accomplishment when I answered a question and found good resources to support the answer. I did get feedback from one patron and that boosted my confidence level. Since nobody else came back asking more questions, I assumed that I answered the questions to their satisfaction.
