This tangible portfolio includes personal information such as documentation of student learning (a collection of certificates, awards, etc), a list of demonstrated life and employability skills, and post 21 transition plans. This will serve not only to shape each student’s Individual Education Plan(IEP), but also be an excellent resource for future use in securing employment and community involvements. Drewry Secondary School is a small special needs school with a clear focus on providing appropriate academic and life skills courses for students in a safe and nurturing environment. We are responsive to the unique needs of our students, their families and the community. The curriculum addresses functional academics, life skills, a variety of employability skills and experiential learning opportunities. Drewry has small classes with extensive classroom support. *New* Experiential Learning Centres New for 2018-19, Drewry has created a number of Experiential Learning Centres or simulated “work environments” where students will learn specific industry skills. Centres will include a new apartment, a business centre, an industrial kitchen with adjoining formal dining room, a green industries/landscaping centre, and a construction/automotive centre. Every class is able to use these learning centres to build skills highlighted as potential pathways for students.

Functional Literacy/NumeracyThe goal of the literacy/numeracy program at Drewry is to provide students with functional literacyand numeracy skills designed to both enhance their academic skill sets, as well as provide themwith skills that are paramount to their success after high school. 

Life Skills & Independent LivingA major focus of the school is teaching the skills for independent living. At Drewry, we have an apartment where students can learn and practice their independent skills in a lifelike environment.    

Electives & Technological EducationDrewry students have access to a variety of interesting electives to choose from. These coursesallow students to pursue their interests and passions, and explore different career options.  Electivesinclude: Visual Arts, Aboriginal Cultures, Music(Vocal & Drumming), Physical Education, Hospitality,Transportation, Construction, and Business.        

Experiential Learning and Cooperative EducationDrewry's Experiential Learning and Co-op Programs offer students preplacement training in: jobapplications, résumé and cover letter writing,interview skills, health and safety, as well as traveltraining. Students can participate in our many supervised or independent work placementopporuntiies within the community.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Come and join our many extra-curricular activities. We are asmall school and we care about each other, so you willalways feel welcome. Join one of our many clubs including choir, dance, Africandrumming, Student Council, talent shows, gardening, visualarts, dance and cooking. If you love sports, we offerbasketball, soccer, bowling excursions, swimmingexcursions, and staff-student sports during our lunch hour. We value the importance of exploring the community inwhich we live. As such, opportunities for field trips areprovided to such areas as community centres, outdooreducation facilities, libraries, museums, art galleries,naturalized sites and theatres. One of the hallmarks of our school is the fostering ofcommunity spirit. We support many opportunities forstudents to engage with each other such as duringfundraising activities, school dances, school-wide extrememake-overs, and a variety of assemblies highlighting studentabilities and celebrating student success.

Our unique school environment with small class sizesenables special education students to be welcomed in asupportive environment. All Drewry students are accepted based onrecommendations from their elementary and junior highschool and special education coordinators. We stress mental health and wellness, healthy livingchoices, and community engagement and involvement. Wehelp every student and we teach them skills that they willutilize for the rest of their lives. Our teachers and support staff work to accommodatedifferent ability levels. We also incorporate practicalopportunities for students to test their new skills in hands-onlearning For those students who need extraassistance, Drewry accesses TDSB and communityresources.

Parent and Community Engagement

Drewry Secondary School takes pride in our relationship with anumber of community partners such as Surrey Place, Griffin Centre,Community Living, Best Buddies, Project Work, YouthLink, TorontoPublic Health, Parks and Recreation. We offer two Open Houseseach school year that provides community agencies with anopportunity to interact with the school community. Drewry Secondary School continues to inspire student leadersthrough the Student Council and Eco Schools Initiative. Within theStudent Council, students are involved with many community andschool events such as volunteering at Cummer Valley Lodge, localelementary schools and Parents' Nights.

Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They arecommunity-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety ofopportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices. Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice,access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential. Here at the TDSB our focus is on student achievement, parent and community engagement and financialstability.
