>ALLAN HOUSER DRAWINGS: THE CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION>Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK>
Relatively unknown to those who champion
Houser’s art, and exhibited here for the first time, are one hundred drawings by the artist that show, as Professor W. Jackson Rushing III and guest curator of the exhibition describes it, “Houser visually thinking out loud.” The exhibit unveils a side of the artist little known and features, among other subjects, warriors and hunters, women and their work and abstract Apache designs. >http://www.ou.edu/fjjma 405-325-1660>>For other celebrations of the centennial of Houser’s birth: http://www.okhouser.org

NA'II'EES APACHE SUNRISE CEREMONY
16
> Cierra, her helper,
the medicine man and
his assistants greet
the first warm rays of
the Sun. Cierra must
prepare the blankets
she will dance and be
massaged upon.
A buckskin is also
placed there and
pollen is placed in an
abalone shell. Lots of
candy, fruit and sodas
to be given away are
nearby. That day,
Cierra will dance to
the four directions,
re-creating a spiritual
journey through the
stages of life. She
will be massaged by
her godmother to
mold her into White
Painted Woman.

NA'II'EES APACHE SUNRISE CEREMONY
18
> After the Sunrise
Dance, two men cut
down trees that will be
used to build Cierra’s
prayer tipi. Eagle
feathers adorn the
ceremonial structure.
That evening, dinner
is served to everyone
and there are gift
exchanges.
>We thank Cierra’s
family and Mr. Bert
Hinton for allowing
us to document this
occasion. We will
feature this Na’ii’ees
in four parts.
This is Part II. >>
