A large crowd gathered in Del City to witness the poise, beauty and talent of
candidates for Miss Indian Oklahoma City. Stephanie Tehauno, representing the
Choctaw Nation, won the competition and for the next year will represent Oklahoma
City at her many public appearances, as well as “big sister” her younger counterparts.
Kaylon Wood (Sac & Fox) won the Traditional Dress and Talent competitions on her
way to becoming Jr. Miss Indian Oklahoma City. Petite and precious Rachel Lee Scott
(Chickasaw) is ready to assume her role as Little Miss Indian Oklahoma City. ¶ Girls
and young Indian women in the Oklahoma City Metro area are able to compete
for titles and other leadership opportunities thanks to the Changing Winds Cultural
Society, and Director Shirley Wapskineh (Potawatomie/Absentee Shawnee). The
Changing Winds Cultural Society provides opportunities for Indian youth to experience
leadership roles in the community and promotes the potential of American Indian youth
as future leaders. ¶ http://www.missindianokc.org

The concepts for my work generally arise out of the materials that I work with. The color,
texture form or unique characteristics of the materials at hand help to guide me in
the decisions regarding concepts and processes. Sometimes these characteristics are
apparent to me, other times the action of cutting, carving or shaping a piece unlocks
the mysteries of their being. I look for something in these materials to give me some
insight about the nature of life or human experience. This leads me to make decisions
as to the juxtaposition or combination of elements and processes necessary to help me
communicate my thoughts and feelings. As I work through a piece I begin to learn a
little more about myself and the world around me. [Don’s furniture work was featured
