Dream It. Do It. WNY Spring 2016

Almost 300 high school students from our area experienced the documentary American Made Movie. In February and March, students from Olean High School and Archbishop Walsh Academy walked over to the CUTCO Theatre at Jamestown Community College while students from Allegany-Limestone Central School gathered in their auditorium to view the movie. American Made Movie looked back on the glory days of U.S. manufacturing, the decades of decline and the positive results of entrepreneurs in our local communities. By illustrating the successes of companies that have prospered, American Made Movie showed students the positive impact these jobs can have on national and local economies in the face of great challenges.

Students were inspired by a presentation (Careers are Competitive: Hit the Ground Running!) by Chris Napoleon, CEO of Napoleon Engineering Services and graduate of Allegany Limestone. Following a brief discussion about the movie and a JCC presentation about the new Manufacturing Technology Institute, students inspired by Mr. Napoleon’s presentation came down to share their interest in a possible future in manufacturing. Perfect!

The following is the result of a quick survey given to students before and after the movie. The presentation, discussion and movie seemed to have quite an effect on the students’ feelings towards the importance and value of manufacturing in Allegany, NY.

Dream It. Do It. WNY Spring 2016

On Saturday, November 21, 2015, Dream It. Do It. WNY had its 4th annual DIDI 500, in collaboration with the ENACTUS Club of St. Bonaventure University. The DIDI 500 set a record this year with 41 teams in attendance, bringing together over 150 of the brightest, most creative and personable students from Cattaraugus County, Allegany County and Northern PA. Students participating were from the following schools: Olean, Allegany, Portville, Hinsdale, Salamanca, Cuba-Rushford, Genesee Valley, Franklinville, Archbishop Walsh, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Gowanda, Homeschool and Bradford, PA. Engineers from Napoleon Engineering Services, Dresser-Rand, CUTCO and SolEpoxy were consultants, mentors and… raced their own cars! Professors and business students from SBU were members of the judging panel for the final marketing presentation. Thank you to Eaton, Dresser-Rand, CUTCO and Toyota for the exciting prizes as well as everyone involved, including 40 SBU student volunteers. We’re already planning for next year! Below are the results of our survey.

Quotes from the Olean Times Herald

Evan DeWald, a new tech teacher at Olean High, brought four eighth-grade teams. The day, he noted, supplemented classroom lessons with hands-on experience. “I think having the conversation with the real engineers allows the students to know the things they’re learning are legitimate,” DeWald said. “A teacher or parent could say this is important, but when someone says, ‘Oh, hey, I can help you with that. I do that type of stuff every day at work,’ the students see the importance of what they’re learning here.”

“At Portville, we do a lot of science fairs and things like that. Last year we had a lot of success with them, so I thought this would be a really good time,” said Ronnie Lott, a Portville Central School junior who is aiming to study chemical or biomedical engineering at Cornell University. “It’s nice to see so many kids all working in the STEM field — it’s all brainstorming and using their hands-on skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to develop something of their own.”

“It just shows the growing STEM. field and the importance of creating new innovations in the future,” Lott said. “These young kids are going to come up with things that can really help humans. The United States of America is going to benefit from small things like this, where these kids eventually go to college and hopefully develop something that will change the world.”

Winter Sledding Snow Down Armed with a modest budget of supplies like cardboard, wood, duct

tape and rope, roughly two dozen students ages 9 to 14 enrolled in DIDI’s second annual Great Sledding “Snow” Down in collaboration with JCC’s Continuing Education Department. During the February Winter Break, students had to craft makeshift sleds capable of withstanding winter elements — and speed. They got it done with a little boost from area manufacturing pros, who lent their expertise in design, safety, scientific method, trouble

shooting and more. Asked what they learned, numerous students remarked at the importance of local manufacturing, teamwork,

trial-and-error and safety. Check out the video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGC3BpUXgZg

Thank you!

The Winter Sledding Snow Down was made possible this year thanks to the guidance and mentoring of the following engineers and technicians:

John Northrup – AJT Safety Solutions

Colby Austin , Jeremy Martin, Troy Giberson – Napoleon Engineering Services

Dick Messer - CUTCO

Mary Deegan-Collins, Phil Farris, Melissa Wiegand, Kyle Custard – SolEpoxy

Mary Beth Kirtz, Jared Warren, Kevin Moschelt, Beatrix Barroso, Bradford Viola – Dresser-Rand

Thank you to Home Depot for providing the materials for the sleds.

Dream It. Do It. WNY Spring 2016 Chemistry Dream Team

Four graduates of Allegany Limestone met with fellow ALCS high school chemistry students in March to share their pathway from Allegany to their current positions at SolEpxy, Solvay and St.

Bonaventure University.

Mrs. Ruth Wahl, retired physics teacher at ALCS, was present and enjoyed seeing her former students. “One of the hardest things for me as a teacher is not

knowing what happens to the students that I've grown to love, once they graduate from school. It was great to see the four ALCS graduates now as adults with careers in chemistry. As I looked over the chemistry students in Ron Johnson’s class, it was also nice to know that these current students, like the graduates, can return to the Greater Olean Area to have rewarding STEM careers.”

The Chemistry Dream Team has a few more members, including Melissa Wiegand, Mary Deegan Collins, Phil Farris and Kaitlyn Penston of SolEpoxy. Be sure to watch the Dream Team video on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnobzBqfQV4

Thank you to the following members of the DIDI Chemistry Dream Team: Dr. Kyle Custard, graduate of Purdue University and Analytical Chemist at SolEpoxy. Miss Stephanie Pikulski, graduate of St. Bonaventure University and Process Chemist at Solvay. Mr. Peter Coate, graduate of Lafayette College and Chemical Engineer at Solvay Dr. Scott Simpson, Graduate of SUNY University at Buffalo and Assistant Professor of Chemistry at St. Bonaventure University

"It was great to be back in the school that fostered a desire to learn about science, The chance to kindle that desire in others is an opportunity I am happy to be a part of."

The Chemistry Dream Team made a point of attributing their success to Mrs. Bernie Taylor, retired chemistry teacher at ALCS. They frequently recalled comments, strategies and encouragement given by Mrs. Taylor during their time at ALCS. The fact that we have two PhDs, one chemical engineer and a chemist with successful careers right here at home, certainly says a lot for local STEM opportunities and the teachers of ALCS!

CUTCO received the 2016 Dream It. Do It. award, accepted by Hugh Freeborn and David Koebelin. Dresser-Rand received the Operational Excellence Award, accepted by John Stahley and Rick Stark. Congratulations!

Marathon to the Sky – Olean High Area manufacturers and Dream It. Do It. are supporting the Olean Science Club’s high altitude project called Marathon to the Sky. The basic idea is to launch a rockoon, a rocket / balloon hybrid. When it reaches a certain altitude, the rocket launches off the payload to even higher altitudes. The payload is also going to be equipped with 3 cameras. The goal is to have the rockoon reach a height of 26.3 miles, roughly that of a marathon.

“I am very impressed with the members of the club. The kids have been working on the payload design and the payload is almost done. We have had weekly meetings for months! Hopefully next year we will launch a rocket from a balloon almost 20 miles up. If successful the rocket will go much further than 26.2 miles. We think we may be able to go over 30 miles into near space! “ ~ Dan Freeman, Science Teacher, OHS
