Smart, but DifferentHigh quality, engaging Honors academics help you develop and practice the skills necessary to succeed at your four-year transfer school and build a foundation for career success.

Honors classes are designed for critical thinking—not critical mass. When it comes to developing analytical, collaborative, and problem- solving skills, bigger is not better. American Honors classes at Mercer are small, seminar-format courses designed to foster thoughtful, intellectual interaction among like-minded peers—who are just as interested in asking the right questions as they are in finding the right answers. Each class is led by an Honors professor whose focus is to educate, challenge, and engage.

Meet Our StudentsWhile American Honors at Mercer students come from diverse backgrounds, they all share a common ambition: to earn their bachelor’s degree from a great four-year school, for less.

Akinlolu Transferred to New Jersey Institute of Technology in Fall 2015

Akinlolu always knew he wanted a college degree, and he knew he wanted to work in science. American Honors helped

him turn his plans into reality. The challenging coursework gave him the academic preparation that he needed to succeed

at a 4-year school. When it came time to transfer, his Honors advisor became his go-to person for every question about the transfer process, and he learned the importance of being a self-advocate and taking charge of his own education. Akinlolu picked his transfer school after visiting NJIT on an Honors trip to campus. Now he’s studying Civil Engineering, with a plan to eventually earn a graduate degree.

Vivian Transferred to Rider University in Fall 2015

Vivian got accepted to a 4-year college right out of high school. But after one year of classes, she couldn’t afford to pay the high tuition bills anymore. She had to withdraw from school, but

she didn’t want to stop her education. She enrolled at Mercer and joined American Honors to keep working toward her bachelor’s

degree. In Honors transfer seminars, Vivian learned about the different kinds of loans, grants, and financial aid opportunities to research for her transfer school. Now, she’s finishing her bachelor’s degree and has even started work on her master’s at Rider University, this time with several scholarships and a Pell grant.

“American Honors made me more confident. It made me think, ‘If I can handle an honors program, a four-year and even grad

school might be possible.’ ”

James Transferred to Rutgers University-New Brunswick in Fall 2015

James’ educational journey has been anything but easy. After a false-start at cosmetology school, he took an hourly job at a grocery store. It was on a midnight shift that James decided to earn a college degree for a better future, and he enrolled at Mercer shortly thereafter. He quickly found community, support, and opportunity in American Honors. It was exactly what he needed. James graduated as president of Phi Theta Kappa and was the commencement speaker at his graduation. Now, he’s studying philosophy at Rutgers with the help of a generous financial aid package.

Chioma Transferred to Howard University in Fall 2015

Chioma spent half of her high school years in New York City, and half in Nigeria. She joined American Honors because she takes her education seriously, and wants to make a difference in the world. She found intensive, challenging courses that gave her one-on-one attention and prepared her for her transfer school. Now she’s studying at Howard University in Washington, DC—her dream school—preparing for a career in either politics or law.

PaigeTransferred to Lebanon Valley College in Spring 2015

In high school, Paige wasn’t even sure if she’d go to college. Once she started at Mercer, she decided she’d eventually transfer to earn her bachelor’s degree. Her one problem: she had no idea how to make it happen. She realized she wasn’t on track to transfer, so she sought out more support. That’s when she found American Honors and met her Honors advisor. Not only did Paige get on track to transfer, she also learned how to pick the right transfer college and ask the right financial aid questions. She says American Honors is the reason she’s studying psychology at Lebanon Valley College today.
