Gates Millennium Scholarship Winner is Jesus Cervantes!

The Gates-Millennium Scholarship is one of the most difficult scholarships to get, because it’s reward is

amazing. Jesus has been given a good-through-graduation scholarship that will go with him to whatever school he wants to attend, and since his plan is to go to medical school, the Gates-Millennium Foundation will pay for medical school also. Imagine the opportunities that a student has knowing that they can become a doctor and come out with NO STUDENT LOANS at all! Wolverine-Knight Foundation Art Work Winner from Sierra Linda High School Anthony Hammond will receive a check for $100 and his work will be permanently on displayed in the front office area. Physical Education/Wellness The Health and Wellness classes at Sierra Linda High School continue to work hard in the gym and the classroom as we finish our school year out strong. Our wellness classrooms are working on our

substance abuse unit. Our SRO Officer Eden is delivering the presentations on the benefits of living drug free. Our gym classes are enjoying the last few days of our basketball unit playing a round robin tournament within classes. The Advanced classes are continuing our sports and fitness units with systematic conditioning working on individual full body workouts, weight training perfecting their max, and Adv. P.E. preparing for their volleyball unit.

Cesar Chavez Leadership Institute WINNER!!!! Maria Fernanda Heredia has been accepted to the Cesar Chavez Leadership Institute!!! CCLI is a week-long program filled with workshops about college preparation, leadership development, and community engagement. It is a competitive program, and only 60 students from across Arizona were accepted. Fernanda will be spending a week at ASU with room and board paid for this summer. Amanda Ramirez and Victoria Roman wrote letters of recommendation. A HUGE congrats to Fernanda!!! Tim Madrid MEChA 1983-1985

Biology: Biology classes completed a number of fun and interesting activities in class. Including a yeast lab for unit 7. The kids got REALLY into this activity and were very surprised that their balloon continued to grow in size due to the production of gas from the yeast cells they placed in the bottles. Next up its finals review for the biology students. We have a jammed pack schedule full of fun and interesting review strategies ready for them! Class of 2018: Their movie night and car washes were great successes! The enthusiastic students can’t wait to start

planning more fundraising opportunities and participate in the end of year festivities. Track, throwers: It was a GREAT year out at the track for the 2015 season! There were many stand out performances from our rookies, like Timmia Anderson who threw a personal best of 78’ feet in disc and 25’ feet in womens

shot. Not to mention our super star freshmen and sophomores, including Sammy Chaparro and Cris Williams who amazingly PR’d almost every week to a seasons best of 104’ and 100’ feet in discus and

for Cris 39’ in mens shot. These youngsters have quite the future in throwing. Our runners and jumpers weren’t far behind with Thomas McGruder shattering records left and right as

the season progressed. Hes on his way to states now so if you see him around wish him luck!!!

Anthony Hammond was the Wolverine Knight Foundation Art Contest WINNER!! Here he is showing off his talent!! He received $100.00 for his efforts and his painting drawing will now become part of SLHS forever!! It will hang on the wall in the front office (space right behind him) with the other previous winners! Our Bulldogs are very talented and when you get a chance, stop by and check out the amazing art work. A Big Shout to Ms. Dima, Ms. Lapinsky, Mr. Murrieta and Mr. Ross for thier guidance and tutelage of these fine artists!!! Great Job !!

The fine arts program at Sierra Linda High School did an amazing job at the Tolleson Union District Art show. Mr. Murietta, Mr. Ross, Ms. Lapinsky and Ms. Dima had numerous entries in categories such as drawing, painting, mixed media, ceramics, and photography.

SLHS Theatre Class and Club SLHS Theatre Class and Club performed their Spring Play Showcase, on April 23 & 24, 2015. We presented a collection of monologues, duos, small group scenes and a one act play. Many of the part one performances and ALL of part two were written by students. The One Act play was entitled “Murphy’s Arrival to Insanity.” Murphy’s Arrival to Insanity is a prequel for a character that Jesus De La O created for the fall play this year. The character of “Murph” was so much fun, it inspired wild speculation about the characters past and

eventually Jesus decided to write a whole play dedicated to this outrageous character! The play starts with Murphy as an old man telling his grandchildren a story about his youth and then takes us back to where the insanity began.

HOSA HOSA has had an amazing year! Our numbers are growing and we are becoming more involved with the community. We traveled to Tucson to compete at the State Leadership Conference in the beginning of April and we came back with several awards. As a chapter we won the Donate Life HOSA Challenge and registered over 700 organ donors. We also won the Outstanding HOSA Chapter award, qualifying us for Nationals. Our biomedical debate and HOSA Bowl teams both placed 4th and are alternates for nationals. We recently volunteered for the Warrior Dash and received a $1000 donation for having so many members participate. The organization had nothing but great things to say about our members. We could not be more proud of our accomplishments. Our awards banquet will take place May 6th.

SLHS Guidance SLHS, where their data is “sizzling hot” (yes, that is an active volcano!!); again focusing

on postsecondary preparedness- beginning in the 8th grade. Aurasma was enjoyed by

all!
