FROM THE DESK OF REV. SHAFER …

One of my goals for this year is to start a newsletter article each month. The problem is, I am not sure what each article will look like. So for this month I would like to give everyone an idea of a few more of my goals. We have launched a High School youth group. We first met in October, met again in November but we haven’t met since. In that time we have worked on getting a plan for volunteer work. February will bring about a youth group service trip. We will be going to Oshkosh to volunteer. The destination hasn’t been nailed down completely. But it will happen.

Another goal, which by the time this newsletter is printed will have already started. We are studying Altar Ego by Craig Groeschel. It is a book that explores our identity in Christ. When we are done with that book, we will find another. This will be after church on Sunday mornings.

We are also going to launch a Bible study, where we are spending time together in the Word. I am not sure what book we will start with, but right now I am leaning toward studying the Book of Acts. We could look at the early church and how they lived out their faith.

Starting with Ash Wednesday, February 18, we will have a worship service here with Winneconne. We will have the imposition of ashes and the Lord’s Supper. Rev. Mara Rivera will be preaching. Please come and kick off the season of Lent with this special service. We will have Wednesday services for the rest of the weeks of Lent. We will have a simple supper and a short service. It will focus on a few Scripture readings, prayer, and a drama. Please come and celebrate Lent with us.

This year is a new year and we will be trying new things. Please support your Session, the Deacons, and Church Life Committee in their endeavors.

In Christ, Rev. Travis

FROM PRESBYTERIAN PEACE FELLOWSHIP (presbypeacefellowship.org/Colombia)Standing with our sisters and brothers -

The situation in Colombia is grim. The country has lived through forty years of war. Today there are "armed actors" everywhere one looks: guerrilla forces, paramilitary troops, police and soldiers and a government committed to "controlling the violence" through overwhelming military response. As if those factors aren't complicated enough, oil and cocaine beckon the U.S. government, and our tax dollars are a complicated part of growing violence that destroys so many lives.

The Colombian Presbyterian Church (IPC) has courageously spoken out against the violence that is endemic in Colombia today. For this stand its members have endured arbitrary arrest and death threats. Responding to these attacks against the IPC, the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship stands with our Colombian sisters and brothers.

SESSION NEWS (January 19, 2015, meeting) Elected Cindy Doughty as treasurer, and Sue Walther assistant treasurer for 2015. Cindy will remain as clerk for the time being, but session will be looking for someone to learn

the clerk’s duties and take over some of the responsibilities before Cindy’s term on session is over at the end of the year.

Decided not to renew membership in Future Omro. Debbie Huebner was elected commissioner to the February 14 meeting of Presbytery in

Shawano. Authorized Eileen Cimermancic to start a mother’s group to meet at the church on a regular

basis. Eileen will take care of organizing, scheduling, networking, and promotion. Approved Pancake Breakfast after worship, Transfiguration Sunday, February 15. Rev. Shafer and Rev. Mara Rivera are planning an Ash Wednesday service to be held HERE,

February 18th. There will be a time of desserts, coffee, and fellowship following the service. We will hold services each Wednesday during Lent at 6:30, following a simple supper at 6 p.m.

The Church Life Committee will plan and host the meals. Authorized Eve Funnell to post photos and stories on our Facebook page and website. (see

related article) Authorized the purchase of Lenten devotionals and bookmarks.

IMPROVING OUR ON-LINE PRESENCE …Eve Funnell has volunteered to help improve our Facebook page and website by taking photos at our various events and posting them with the occasional story. Watch for her roaming around with her phone, trying to capture a sense of our congregation. For security reasons, no names will be attached to the photos … and photos of children will not be shared without parental authorization. (Authorization forms will be sent out to all parents of minors.) If you do not want to be in any photo shared on FB or the website, please let Eve know or remove yourself from the shoot.

GAME ON!It was a small – but enthusiastic – group that stayed for games and fellowship after the Epiphany Brunch January 25th. There was no shortage of games to choose from as about 15 people enjoyed playing old stand-bys such as Battleship, Old Maid, and Trouble and newer games like Sequence (well, maybe not so new) and Apples to Apples or just sitting and talking. There was even some talk of a monthly game night … we’ll let you know if anything develops.

REMEMBER TO BRING DONATIONS TO THE FOOD PANTRY ON THE 3RD SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH.

On a related note … from Winnebago Presbytery Earlier this week, the following letter was received at the Presbytery office from the Rev. Mamie Broadhurst and the Rev. Diego Higuita in Colombia: “We write to ask your prayers for the IPC (Presbyterian Church of Colombia) and its members, particularly those on the North Coast. Last week they received a letter from the Aguilas Negras (a

paramilitary group) threatening churches in Barranquilla generally and some people in the IPC (and beyond) particularly. For now we are not asking for any action apart from your prayers. The IPC, PCUSA, and Presbyterian Peace Fellowship are coordinating their efforts, and as soon as we know next steps and have clear vehicles to express your solidarity, we will let you know."

KWIK TRIP FUNDRAISEROur Kwik Trip Scrip program is going extremely well. In the four months we ran the program in 2014, we made over $2,100.00. Cards are available from Cindy Sunday mornings – or in the office during the week. We have a good supply of cards – in denominations of $25 and $50 – that were purchased with last year’s 10% discount. The next order we make will be with a 5% discount, but the church will receive 10% of the amount of any “in-store” purchase you make with the card, excluding cigarettes, lottery tickets, and stamps.

NEED A RIDE TO CHURCH? Do you need a ride to church for worship on Sunday? Do transportation problems keep you from worship? Are you homebound? Shut in? Call the church office if you would like a ride to church for worship. On the other hand, would you be willing to give someone a ride to church for worship? Call the office to be put on the Deacon’s Transportation list. Thank you.

If you would like to receive the newsletter electronically and are not currently doing so, please email a request to Sandy King ([email protected]) or to the church ([email protected]). You can also access the newsletter on our website – www.omropres.com
