Prefatory Note.^JmOHN LEECH, whose Jiiimoroiis picturesf of English life and character for so many

years were the soul of ''Punch" andthe delight of nearly the entire English-speakingluorld, was born in London about 1817, and diedthere on October 29, 1864, at the comparativelyearly age of forty-seven. His draivings appearedin ''Punch" soon after its establishment, and con-tinued up to the time of his death. The socialfeatures and extravagances of England neverfound a more apt or kindly delineator, and insporting scenes he ivas pre-eminent. One char-acteristic of Leech's drawings, as it is of thoseof his distinguished successor, Du Maurier, is

''Many people"remtirks Mr. Henry James, in his recent essayon Du Maurier, "have gathered their knowledgeof Ettglish life almost entirely from ^ Punch,' andit would be difficult to imagine a more abundantand, on the whole, a more accurate informant. The accumulated volumes of this periodical con-tain evidence on a multitude of points of whichthere is no mention in the serious worksnoteven in the novelsof the day. The smallestdetails of social habit are depicted there, and tJieoddities of a race of people in wJiom oddity isstrangely compatible with the dominion of conven-tiony It is to be further remarked of socialcaricatures in '^ Punch," that they are very rarelycoarse, cruel, or bitter. There are very few lapses
