Drawing 1020 CE – Advanced Drawing Mr. Neal, Room 614, CRN #28667, email: [email protected] Course Description: This is a Concurrent Enrollment Course that is available to all junior and senior high school students in good academic standing. This course satisfies a 3 credit general education re-quirement at all USHE institutions. It also offers a high school semester art credit. This course continues drawing techniques and emphasizes the fundamentals of observation-based, in-class as-sign- ments, and homework practice that build skills in drawing. This course also investigates basic black and white media such as graphite and charcoal, as well as color media. Class can be taken for non-college credit. This is a studio course which means work will be done in the studio (classroom). HIGH SCHOOL DRAWING OR PAINTING MUST BE TAKEN TO ENROLL IN THIS CLASS The course will involve assignments dealing with the topics listed below: Composition Value/Shading Perspective Observational Drawing Lighting Ink Techniques Gridding Elements & Principles Course Outcomes and Learning Objectives: 1. Draw competently from life and reference using a variety of media. 2. Demonstrate mastery of basic drawing principles and integration into a personal style of expression. 3. Critique of one’s own art, as well as others’. 4. Application of elements and principles to create a dynamic artwork. Upon successful completion, students should have the following abilities and attitudes: 1. Appreciation of the importance of art and its role in societies 2. Value art’s potential for impact in their own lives 3. Experience a heightened sense of awareness toward the visual world Attendance is vital for this class. New concepts are presented each class period and students who do not attend or are often late can quickly fall behind. The Wasatch High School attendance policy will be administered and enforced in this class. Key points of this policy include the following items: Being a studio course, students are expected to attend every class. After 3 absences (excused or unex- cused, a UA (Unsatisfactory Attendance is given. If students receives 6 or more tardies or excessive lateness in a term, they will receive a “U” for a citizenship grade.

Projects are graded with a 30-point rubric, based on the following:1. Creativity and Problem-Solving using the principles of design (10 points)2. Demonstration of craftsmanship and skill (10 points)3. Execution of requirements for the assignment (10 points)

All late work has a 20% deduction from the grade, 50% off after 3 weeks.

Participation Points: Participation points are often given at the beginning of the class. (warm-ups, bell ringers). Students must be present and arrive on time to receive full points. If students are tardy or do nothing in class (not prepared), points are taken off. If students are absent, they will receive a “0” for participation points. They can only make up 10 points per term.

Cell phones are permitted in class for listening to music and for emergencies.Constant unnecessary phone use will lead to loss of this privilege.

Plagiarism: In keeping with UVU policy, evidence of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade in the course and disciplinary review by the college and high school.

Materials required: Students must have their own sketchbook (9" x 12" preferred). I will supply draw-ing pencils, ink pen, charcoal, art gum, blenders, kneaded eraser, and all other materials. Draw-ing paper is also provided.

How to enroll: Students must register on line at www.uvu.edu/concurrent September 7: Last Day to complete admissions September 14: Last day to sign-up for course, September 23: TUITION DUE, CRN # 28667 October 19: Last day to drop without a “W” November 17: Last day to withdraw with a “W” NOTICE: You will receive the same grade for your high school course as you receive for your college course. Your grade for this class will become part of your permanent college transcript and will affect your GPA. A low grade in this course can affect college acceptance and scholarship eligibility.
