Drawers, 1930-1940
Peach silk or rayon
Scale: 1 box = 1"
The body of the drawers are cut in two pieces, hand-sewn together with french seams. The top
edge is bound on the bias, and the buttoning closure on the left hip is backed with a placket. On
the front of the legs, indicated with the dotted line, are inserted panels of off-white lace - as the
pieces are irregular, and some of the lace motifs extending upward are applied over the fabric
rather than inserted, the marked areas are only a general indication, and only delineate the area of
the inserted lace. This lace is sewn to the drawers with a satin stitch in grey thread, and the cut
edges of the fabric beneath are unfinished.
The slit for the gusset is 4" long in front, and 4.5" long in the back. The gusset pieces (four in
total) are hand-sewn with a french seam down the center, and are sewn into the drawers with the
same satin stitch.
The lower edge of the drawers is also bound, except in the lace-filled areas.
