Foreword

Where Drastic Men of Clay are concerned, let usremember that even in his or her troubles, mankind wasmade to be a giant. Yet all of life is such a brief whim. Lifeis too much like Carl Sandburg's musings called Fog: "Thefog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and

city on silent haunches and then moves on." Therefore, asdrastic men and women of clay, let us take this mutedmoment to listen to the shouted whisper of life's beautifulheartbeat.

This golden ageof literature

has only nowbegun;

as balladeers elopewith encyclopedias

to the sun.

Whereuponmessengers of the gods

will dancethe electric blue

of sky;

with triumphantelliptical writings

away up thereon high.

Thenfood for thoughtmight land upon

some solitarycold dwarf star,as other travelers

with hungry minds

re-read our tomeson Mars.

In this golden ageof literaturethat has merely

just begun;

as balladeers elopewith encyclopedias

to the sun.

Catch of the Day

taunted by the rainand by the raucous soundsof splashing days,end over endalong our lane

we sit at tables,stand in windows,lay around withoutelectricitywith our hornsin a twist.

our demons faced,in mirrors,we learn that menhave no friends,not even where roadside fieldand tangled sky ends,

but if most of life's troubleswere caught in a net,the deep would be shallowand the sea not wet

these lines we writewould be without hooks,

and pessimism, the bait,for only History books.
