PORTFOLIO President NAME/S Dana Holden

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 It has been a busy and exciting 2017 for Drama Queensland, beginning with the 40th celebrations in March at the annual State Conference. Committee have worked hard to support members across all areas, from curriculum in P-10 and Senior to regional communication, primary groups and more. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The PD team, led by Emma Funnell, ran a wonderful State Conference NEXT in March this year at Queensland Academy of Creative Industries, with a night time soiree and book launch at QUT’s new Creative Industries Precinct. There were a range of presenters, topics and keynotes which kept the content fresh and engaging for our delegates. Once again we had a huge show of support from our wonderful community and Drama Queensland continues to provide excellent professional development and networking for its members. A particular thank you to the 2017 PD team Emma Funnell, Melanie Griffith and Hayley Elliott-Maclure, our Conference Manager Katrina Torenbeek and Business Manager Alaana, it was a big effort with the extra events this year. DQ’s Nuts and Bolts was well attended this year with over 40 participants on the day, held in early November. There were strong presentations, and the panel discussion which was meant to last 45 minutes ran for nearly 2 hours. A great sign that we are providing something not otherwise offered. We are looking forward to EMBRACE in 2018 on March 9 and 10 at QACI. Well done to the whole team who always comes together for our exceptional PD events. Well done Emma on your leadership throughout 2017. CURRICULUM This year has seen schools focus on National Curriculum: The Arts and the New QCE have syllabuses published on the QCAA website. Thank you to our many members and Life Members for the thoughts and feedback this year.

• NATIONAL CURRICULUM There has been a push from the DET to have school leaders’ work through a number of sessions across 2017 on how to implement all subjects by 2020 and map curriculum across their schools. There has been an increased focus on the 7-10 space which has been neglected at times in previous year with a focus either on senior years or on primary arts. Primary Arts continues to be an area where Drama Queensland looks to ignite more interest and we hope to work with primary teachers, specialists and generalists, in achieving quality outcomes for students. We have committee members with passions and expertise in this area who will continue to work in this space, and we are looking to engage once again with QAAE on a more regular basis.

• TERTIARY ENTRANCE SYSTEM AND SENIOR SYLLABUS DEVELOPMENT Drama Queensland continues to support staff and students throughout the process of the development of the new SATE system. We have provided feedback as an association and have shared updates with all members via Facebook and the egroup. PD is underway across the state and we look forward to our teachers receiving this support from QCAA and identifying ways we can support this process and the continued rollout of resources and assistance to our members. A key goal for DQ is to stay up to date with information about the SATE system.

Thank you to Sarah Cox, Ian Sweeny and Marthy Watson who have assisted in the areas of curriculum this year. INDUSTRY PARTNERS Drama Queensland would like to acknowledge our Gold Industry Partners this year – Queensland Theatre Company, Macrosphere and QMF Youth Touring, our Silver Industry Partner La Boite, and our Bronze Industry Partners shake & stir, Homunculus and Playlab. We are excited to work with these organisations and businesses. The association values the contributions from our Industry Partners and the access it allows our members. SPECIAL PROJECTS Drama Queensland is continuing work on the Book Project, led by life member Madonna Stinson and chaired by Naomi Russell. The committee is always looking at creating resources and will be investigating options of how these look with the new SATE system. DRAMA AUSTRALIA The Drama Archives Project has been led successfully by a number of life members and committee members over the past few years and I want to acknowledge their hard work and commitment to collecting memories and resources. This project is at a point where the DALO is investigating if there are ways forward or if we consolidate where we are currently sitting with collected resources. We are looking to upload to our website so that we can share these treasures with everyone. Madonna Stinson stepped down from the Drama Australia Board this year, but has stayed on as Managing Editor of NJ. Susan Davis and Naomi Russel have remained in their roles of Finance and Marketing, respectively. Marie Ferguson will also continue in her role of Business Manager. The AGM was held via webinar on Saturday 14 October 2017. Congratulations to our Queensland members, we know they will continue to do an amazing job in advocating for Drama at a national level. The Drama Australia National Conference in Perth in February and the National Symposium in Canberra were both wonderful events which provided a different professional development opportunities for members. Lastly, there is good news about NJ which will now be provided at a lower cost due to the nature of our memberships. As most memberships are individual and not corporate, DA were able to broker a deal whereby the cost of NJ is now only $40. Well done Drama Australia. Thank you to Joan Cassidy for her work as DALO this year. PUBLICATIONS The Publications team have worked hard under the expert guidance of Stephanie Tudor. DQ News, Musesheet and Journal continue to provide members with information about new plays, performances, activities, resources and other inspiration, as well as articles from classroom teachers and researchers. The website still captures the excellent resources from conference and we aim to update information for the association as we evolve. Thank you to the whole community for contributing and thank you to our Publications team Stephanie Tudor, Daniela Clever, Melissa Handley, Kim Sullivan and David Jackson. MEMBERSHIP and PLANNING Vice President of Planning, Monique McMullen, has led the Memberships team by engaging with universities, primary and regional teachers and managing the Drama Queensland finances. The Memberships team are also responsible for the Life Member award and a new Excellence in Drama Teaching Award, recognizing outstanding practice of one of our members. Facebook continues to attract followers and allow us to engage with our regional, rural and remote members, including international. With over 2500 ‘likes’ on Facebook we are reaching a wide variety of people and this continues to strengthen our association. Through providing free

membership to one graduating student from tertiary institutions, we are committed to engaging with the newest members of our community and strengthening ties with institutions. We also continue to have a regional member on the committee to ensure that our diverse members are represented and their voices are heard throughout the year so we can meet the needs of all DQ members. Since moving to credit cards our Business Manager has been able to complete DQ business in a more timely and effective manner, we thank the membership for supporting this move at the 2015 AGM. We worked with a deficit budget this year and are pleased to report that, at $3438.68 we can report a smaller deficit than planned. Thank you to the entire Membership portfolio including Monique McMullen, Emma Hill and Sam Neill for their wonderful work this year. COMMITTEE

The 2017 committee has worked effectively together to achieve results across the various portfolios for our members. I would like to acknowledge the work of the entire committee: Monique McMullen, Stephanie Tudor, Emma Funnell, Joan Cassidy, Naomi Russell, Ian Sweeney, Sarah Cox, Marthy Watson, Emma Hill, Sam Neill, Daniella Clever, Veronica McDermott, Kim Sullivan, Melissa Handley, David Jackson, Melanie Griffith and Hayley Elliott-Maclure. Lastly, to our incredible, warm and knowledgeable Business Manager, Alaana Sheppard, thank you for all that you do.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 In 2018 we will maintain a commitment to the development of the Senior Syllabuses, the National Curriculum implementation and our work in publications, social media and website. Drama Queensland looks forward to reviewing how we engage with Primary specialist and generalist teachers to ensure quality teaching and learning across all year levels in the Arts. Our conference will be key in ensuring the community is prepared and supported as they continue with, or move into, delivering the National Curriculum: The Arts. Lastly, a focus on our special project of the Book Project will develop further into 2018.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Create a DQ Social Calendar which looks to have informal social gatherings of members throughout the

year. • Re-engage with primary teachers, including how to work with generalist teachers in the position of

teaching the Arts. • Maximizing committee member attendance at meetings and develop capacity by providing opportunities

to lead areas of interest as they arise, including QAAE involvement • Work with QAAE, QCAA, DET and other stakeholders in the implementation of the senior system and

implementation of the National Curriculum: The Arts • Provide current advice and information through egroup and social media platforms • Regularly review and edit the website content to ensure that it is up to date and accurate • Proof and edit all DQ publications thoroughly to maintain a high level of quality and professionalism in all of

our communications and publications • Explore membership by investigating how to make DQ membership highly desirable through exclusive

offers, events and opportunities available to members only • Review the Strategic Plan to revise goals and develop the plan to encompass the full scope of what Drama

Queensland provides and adjust as necessary

Motion: Due to the nominations received, the existing commitments of the Drama Queensland committee, and the current nature of the roles, Drama Queensland would like the Vice President National Liaison Officer role to be filled by the same person nominated for Vice President Professional Development. Firstly, due to the nature of the role, it is beneficial for the Vice President PD to see and learn from what is going on around the nation, and secondly, that the National Liaison role is ideally filled by someone with links with national representatives in order to make a smooth transition into the role. Under the constitution, there are four Vice President positions which must be reported on separately, but the positions do not need to be filled by four separate people. Drama Queensland feels it is in the association’s best interests to have both Vice President National Liaison and Vice President Professional Develop filled by the same person in 2018, with a review of any change to the constitution to occur throughout next year to more accurately reflect the current needs of the association and its members. MOTION 2: The Drama Queensland membership supports that the four Vice President roles be filled by three people, with the National Liaison role taken on, and reported on, by another elected Vice President in 2018, to best meet the needs of the membership.

I move that my President’s report for the 2017 Annual General Meeting be accepted.

PORTFOLIO Vice President (Planning/Finance) NAME/S Monique McMullen

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 2017 has been an extremely busy year for Drama Queensland. The Vice President Planning/Finance role continues to oversee the budget and business transactions of the organization, and works closely with the Business Manager. The Vice President Planning also oversees the Portfolio of Membership Membership Drama Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation whose core business is to advocate for Drama educators and provide professional learning opportunities. Therefore, our membership is an especially important portfolio. We have worked hard for our members throughout 2017 and our membership sits around 300 members. Our membership officers Emma and Sam are to be particularly thanked for their work within the membership portfolio – they have worked particularly hard to stay in touch with our members and advertise the benefits of a DQ membership, and will continue a membership drive in 2018. They will elaborate on all business within the membership portfolio through their reports. The Robin Thomas Bursary was awarded in 2017 to a beginning teacher for them to attend the State Conference: Next. In addition, Drama Queensland awarded a Regional Grant in 2017 for members to attend Next. Audit Drama Queensland finds itself in a very stable financial position at the close of the year, with cash at the bank equalling $85,343.85 as at 30th September 2016 with open invoices totalling $6677.94 still owing from Trade Debtors. The audit statements record a deficit of -$3, 438.68 which is significantly less than planned for. Last year’s budget predicted a deficit of $10.000.00 . This difference is due to Drama Queensland not investing in a major project in the 2016/2017 financial year as well as 2 NJ subscription payments, 2 Drama Australia CML payments and our journal postage and printing costs were doubled as invoices were paid in the same financial year. We will continue to examine how PD is conducted to ensure that it is viable for the organization and our members.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 Budget Presented is the proposed working budget for 2017/2018. Our budget for the current financial year is based on last year’s with some adjustments. As always, we budget conservatively and will maintain a tight and strategic spending structure. The budget currently sits at a deficit of -$618.75, which is considerably smaller than last year. It is important to remember that our financial year now ends in September and some events fall twice in one year. Membership This year’s budget includes an increase in membership fees to incorporate the raising of DA’s CML. From 2018 the CML will be $30 instead of $25, which means our membership price will rise also. Professional Development Drama Queensland will host a number of professional development events in 2018 including the Conference Embrace and Nuts and Bolts. These events have been offered in previous years and we are confident that we

Page 8: Drama Queensland Date: Tuesday 28 November 2016 Time: 5 ...€¦ · Portfolio Project/A ctivity Highlights 2016 /2017 It has been a busy and exciting 2017 for Drama Queensland, beginning

have budgeted appropriately. As stated we will continue to examine the cost, landscape and participation from our members when planning professional development in the future. The Embrace 2018 Conference budget, which sits within DQ’s working budget, currently reports a surplus of $154.29. We have budgeted conservatively for this event and we hope that having taken into account people’s interest in the New Senior system and syllabus will see it well attended. The Business and Conference Managers, President and Vice Presidents Planning and PD have worked collaboratively to create an event that is affordable and which might contribute a small surplus. CONFERENCE BUDGET NOTES Overview 2018 Conference preparation planning is currently in motion, with the program and venue currently being finalised. We are currently on target with our conference timeline, and are confident to deliver a great event in 2018 .The Conference budget reflects this planning, and has been carefully considered to deliver a break even event, so as not to deliver any additional financial pressure to the organisation. Considerations • We wanted to maintain conference registrations costs at the same rate we have been charging since 2013, to

assist as many Drama Queensland members access to attend the conference. Budget Explanation The 2018 Conference budget presented in this report follows the 1.5day conference event. The budget breaks even, with income and expenditure balancing with 150 registrations, which is a low-risk proposition, given our regular attendance of 250+ at most conference each year. The projected income is: $31,095.54 and Expenditure: $30,941.25 Some specific details for members consideration are as follows: • Registration Fees: Registration fees will remain the same as previous years. As we are delivering a 1-5-day

event our registration fees will remain as per our 2017 conference. • Venue Support: Drama Queensland has been fortunate over the past few years to receive venue support

from our industry partners, corporate members and others to be able to deliver the event in great facilitates at a reduced rate. This has meant we have been able to keep costs down for all our members to attend. We are pleased to be returning to QACI for the 2018 conference.

Projects/Resources Throughout 2018 our committee will finalise and publish the book project proposed by Dr Madonna Stinson, with the costs associated with this falling in this budget period. We have budgeted $3000 for the book project to be developed by our Projects Team and this looks to be a cost neutral investment. Our Print and DVD resources are dwindling in stock and sales and will not be re-produced in the future due to the changing landscape of the National Curriculum for Drama and the proposed changes to the Senior Curriculum. We will continue to pay out to our collaborators as sales are made Technology

Page 9: Drama Queensland Date: Tuesday 28 November 2016 Time: 5 ...€¦ · Portfolio Project/A ctivity Highlights 2016 /2017 It has been a busy and exciting 2017 for Drama Queensland, beginning

We have budgeted for a Zoom subscription, at $200 to allow us to teleconference more effectively with our committee members in regional areas. We have several valuable regional members on the committee and it has become increasingly difficult to communicate with up to four at a time on speaker-phone. We hope that this allows us to conduct our meetings more productively. Publications Our publications remain an important resource for our members. This will remain a significant focus of our priorities for 2017/2018 with the committee aiming to provide a cost-effective and professional series of publications for our members. This year, we will only have one journal, reducing the costs incurred last year with a double publication. Thank you to Alaana Sheppard and Katrina Torenbeek for their work on our annual budget and conference budget, respectively, as well as their continued support throughout the year. Thank you to Dana Holden, the Executive team and our hardworking, enthusiastic and innovative committee who are fantastic to work with.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Ensure that membership continues to grow by providing members with worthwhile services • Continue to examine each professional development opportunity to ensure that PD is cost neutral or makes

slight profit. • Continue to strengthen relationships with primary Drama educators through networking sessions,

conference workshop options and quality resources. Increase this to include Junior Secondary. • Explore ways to connect with tertiary bodies early on in 2018, rather than later in the year when students

are off campus on practicum experiences. Also explore ways to have ‘Drama QLD Ambassadors’ on each campus.

• Use a regional touring presenter for a masterclass for RRU to assist with costs • Ensure publications are delivered to a high standard and are correct length to assist with postage costs • In terms of budget, maintain a tight and strategic spending structure. • Review cost of membership in 2018 for following year Motion: After many years at the same price of $25, Drama Australia has voted to increase the Constituent Membership Levy to $30 in 2018 to better support their membership across the country. Subsequently, this increase must be passed on to our members leading to an increase in our DQ membership price. MOTION 3: The Drama Queensland membership supports the increase of Drama Australia’s Constituent Membership Levy from $25 to $30 in 2018. Motion: After many years at the same price of $90, Drama Queensland will need to increase the membership prices to incorporate the increase in DA’s CML. The committee has proposed the following increases:

• Corporate Membership - $292.50 to $325 • Individual Membership - $90 to $1000 • Concession Membership - $63 to $70

These increases will allow us to incorporate the cost of DA’s CML and provide us with revenue to better represent the needs of our membership.

PORTFOLIO Regional Membership NAME/S Sam Neill/Emma Hill

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 • 2017 marked Emma’s third year as Regional Representative of Drama Queensland and proudly welcomed

Sam Neill to the portfolio in May before heading off on Maternity Leave. It is a privilege to help and support regional teachers as best we can.

• It is not easy to be a long distance member of such a wonderful committee and we thank Drama Queensland for recognizing this, always positively encouraging and supporting us and being a strong team to work with.

• We have engaged in many networking meet and greets (particularly at the 2017 State Conference with regional teachers), new syllabus PD, updated the regional contact lists, including using contacts to initiate and plan PD for our region with colleagues in the local Mackay district area and promoting networking to regional groups through continuous contact with the email groups.

• Difficulty still surrounds maintaining broad regional contact and receiving response to emails sent out on the regional emailing list. In saying that, a regional mentor contact list is in development with aims to connect members with other members closer to their regions who can communicate with individual teachers on general guidance, support, resources and curriculum.

• As Regional Rep, we successfully attended Drama Queensland Committee meetings and the 2017 State Conference.

• Regional Rep’s involvement in the Regional Grant continues to strengthen our connections with regional committee members. As a point for receiving applications, answering questions and collating travel and accommodation documents for Alaana Sheppard, we were able to split our Regional Grant between four successful applicants: Jane Younghusband, Marika Hill, Simon Locke and Crystal Watson. It was a pleasure to meet and work with you at Next.

• Unfortunately, the annual Regional Round Up PD didn’t happen this year. Members have expressed their desire for its return next year so hopefully we can organize an awesome opportunity for our regional members. This only reiterates how vital and important professional development and ‘Regional Round Up’ is to our regional locations.

• New Drama syllabus PD rolled out in October, starting in North QLD and making its way down to the central coast. It was a vital experience for our regional members to receive the first look at the new syllabus implementation and workshop with other members from the surrounding regions. A lot of questions were raised and many participants were active in engaging with the workshop.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 • Direct communication with regional schools to introduce Drama Queensland, promote membership and

the regional email group • Continued consultation with our North QLD members to promote drama in the North- Cairns and Mt Isa

regions. • Preparing for the 2018 Drama Queensland State Conference: Embrace and organizing the Regional Grant

Applications. • Proposing for 2018 Regional Round Up • Continue to promote and focus on networking within regions

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Continual feedback, communication and support to Regional Rep. • To maintain important connections with committee meetings • Maintain a working contact list and key contacts for different regions. • Continue to split the ‘Regional Grant’ between several applicants to allow more than one regional member

to attend the Drama Queensland Annual State Conference.

I move that my report be accepted.

PORTFOLIO National Liaison NAME/S Joan Cassidy

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 The role of the DALO is to maintain a communication link between Drama Queensland State and the Drama Australia Board. This two way communication is essential to ensure the National and State or Territory bodies can work together effectively in representing and responding to emerging issues like the Australian Curriculum for the benefit of our members. Draft - Drama Australia Liaison Officer Orientation Pack Drama Australia Key Meetings: Combined Face to Face meeting – February; Webinars- May, August; AGM Webinar – October. Our conference featured a variety of workshops across many areas of study and age groups and attracted over 337 members and Industry partners. The State Conference NEXT was a stellar professional learning event alongside the gala celebration of our 40th Anniversary Forty and Fabulous. It was held at QACI (Queensland Academy of Creative Industries) on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday March 17 -18. The conference program included: • an Historical Tribute by the Life Members to commemorate 40 years of Drama Queensland and its

members. • three significant key notes by Dr Rachel Jacobs, Dr Stephen Carleton and Dr Judith McLean • the welcome of new Life Member, Sue Davis • the presentation of other significant awards including the Robin Thomas Bursary for beginning teachers –

Drama education • performances by the Queensland Youth Ensemble’s Tribute to Teachers and the Queensland Music

Festival’s School Touring Program, Fair Play. Nuts and Bolts: Our annual regional PD program this took place in November at Brigidine College. The workshop day was offered to beginning and pre-service teachers and primary and secondary teachers across the state. Presenters included Brad Haseman and John O’Toole: Dramawise; Naomi Russell: Drama Games Toolkit: Stephanie Tudor Unpacking a Unit of Work and a Q and A session with panel of experienced drama teachers. QAAE partnership- Queensland Advocates for Arts Education. QAAE Facebook page has been active throughout the year posting information about Professional learning opportunities, NAAE submissions and relevant Arts Education articles. DQ has delegated committee members to attend meetings, but these have been infrequent in the latter part of the year. Plans to organise an Arts Education symposium did not eventuate due to the energy and time required for NEXT and Forty and Fabulous. Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority. Our members were informed and assisted to register for the QCAA Professional Development program for implementing and assessing the Australian curriculum across the P to 10 bands. Drama Queensland members attended webinars and workshops scheduled throughout October and November across metro and regional centres. The years 7 -10 curriculum webinar was booked out so a

copy of the PowerPoint was made available on the QCAA website thanks to one of our egroup members. The years 3 -6 webinars were not as well subscribed. I attended both webinars and gave positive feedback to the QCAA presenters for their clear and succinct slideshow exemplifying the design and content of the Australian Curriculum the Arts and demonstrating how Queensland teachers can navigate and implement ACARA and use QCAA resources. Journal: Drama Queensland Says, Forty and Fabulous. The special edition - Volume 40! of our Drama Queensland Journal is a lasting memory of our commemorative fortieth state conference, its members past and present and far and wide, and the Gala celebration which brought together drama educators from 1976 to 2017. Drama Queensland Archives: On Tuesday 18th July the project mangers of the Drama Queensland Archives handed over the management of the project to the DQ committee to continue to explore the logistics of collecting, collating and digitally storing the resource information. Funding for the Drama Archive Project ceased on June 30th 2017. Discussions have occurred around investigating State Library archive contacts, funding possibilities for personnel and DQ website management options in order to proceed in an organised and sustainable way. Julie Dyson (chair of NAAE and NLA volunteer) has provided advice to John O’Toole (Project Manager) Joan Cassidy (DALO) and Dana Holden (President) about storing drama archives. A Drama Archive meeting on November 28th ,involving DALOs from from each state will be held to discuss access and storage. We would sincerely like to thank the excellent work, which has been completed by the project managers Sue Lawson, Shay Ryan, Sue Davis, Christine Comans, Debb Wall and John O’Toole to date. Life Members Tribute: Forty Years and Still Counting. The publication of this presentation in the 40th volume of DQ Says Forty and Fabulous celebrates forty years of the business of QADIE/Drama Queensland. It is a comprehensively researched and succinct tribute to the memories and memorials of our past members. As such it is a significant document to be included in our MAMA collection. Drama Australia and National Advocates for Arts Education: Drama Queensland supports and acknowledges our NAAE Advocates: DA President John Nicholas Saunders and Associate Professor Sandra Gattenhoff for their dedication to ensure that all young Australians have access to quality arts education. John and Sandra have been very active in submitting advocacy documents to federal and state governments in 2017. DQ has congratulated our National Advocates for their successful submission to put the A in STEAM following the Federal Parliamentary Inquiry into Innovation and Creativity; the NAAE submission to the Gonski Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools which cited “the growing body of Australian and International research to unequivocally demonstrate the enormous positive impacts that the Arts can have on students’ academic and non – academic success”; and the DA President’s presentation, Labor for the Arts on the Arts Education panel at the NSW Labor State Conference. I have attended the following DA conferences in 2017: Drama Australia National Conference: New Ground Rising, 10th -12th February 2017 Attended by Queensland Delgates: Joan Cassidy, John O’Toole, Naomi Russell and Cherice Cleasby. Congratulations to the Drama West committee who did an outstanding job of hosting the conference! They provided a varied and “ground breaking” program of keynotes, workshops, papers, interactive discussions, panel presentations as well as performances by students from St George’s Anglican College, the conference venue.

Drama Australia Symposium Sixteen DQ Delegates attended Creative Capital hosted by ACTDA. The Symposium was an invigorating and collegial event. DQ wishes to congratulate the Convener, Rachel Jacobs, the ACTDA president Lucy Cronan and her committee and the Drama Australia Board for their enthusiasm, energy and warmth in co-ordinating this scholarly event. Presentations by Drama Queensland life members: Sandra Gattenhoff; Brad Haseman, Sue Davis; Madonna Stinson and delegates Adrianne Jones, Judy Dunn, Sanaz Hamoonpou, Dana Holden and Chris Harm were very well received. We wish to thank DQ drama educators who continue to excel in sharing their cutting edge research and evidence –based practice. Drama Australia White Papers. Drama Australia has developed and disseminated three new initiatives in 2017which impact on DQ: CML: DQ has approved the $5.00 increase for the DA Constituent Member Levy. We have agreed that we will invite our members to vote on a motion to include the additional cost in the 2018 DQ membership fees bringing them to $100. This will occur at the DQ AGM. Privacy Policy With the recent changes to privacy legislation, any organization or association that collects personal or contact information must have a privacy policy and privacy collection statement that notes how the data is collected and shared. DA will comply with this legislation and DQ has voted to support the inclusion of a privacy policy and collection statement in its membership information.

Direct communication with Drama Australia. Drama Australia has developed a new model for state and territory members of their associations to receive timely information regarding important matters such as conferences, expressions of interest and special projects. A One Page summary of the minutes arising from the Drama Australia combined meetings is now published and distributed to members each quarter.

NJ The DQ committee is very pleased to accept the reduced cost of the Individual member subscription to $ 40. DQ membership forms for 2018 will now include a separate pricing category for Individual membership, which includes the $40 NJ subscription. Sharing professional learning. Drama Australia introduced an email chain for states to share their professional learning models. DQ has shared the professional learning opportunities we offer including: conferences, website, webinars and workshops, DQ journal, DQ Facebook, DQ news, DQ egroup, DQ Muse sheet and primary meet ups as well as promoting PL provided by QCAA and Industry partners. Collegial support We have been active in supporting our colleagues from other states and territories. At the request of Drama NSW, DQ members were invited to complete a survey conducted by NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) as part of the consultation process for their new Creative Arts K-6 Syllabus. Drama NSW advised participants to select the option that supported equal place for Drama in the NSW Curriculum. Drama Queensland has promoted interstate and international conferences: New Ground Rising – Drama West; Creative Capital - ACTDA; IDEA 25; Under the Big Top - Drama Vic. Closing Remarks: I am stepping down from the DALO position and have nominated for the DQ committee in a new portfolio. I have really enjoyed my liaison position - having a foot in each camp – DQ and DA. It has been a privilege to be able to report on the exceptional work of the amazing Drama Queensland committee and the wonderful work of the Drama Australia Board. I will be spending some time in Sydney, supporting my family and travelling in Europe for a few months. This would make it difficult to keep up with all the news whilst on the move.

PORTFOLIO Vice President Professional Development NAME/S Emma Funnell

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 2017 was the year of Drama Queensland being 40 and Fabulous. It was an event-filled year with our annual State Conference, 40th Gala Event and the re-introduction of Nuts and Bolts. 2017 ‘Next’ State Conference NEXT 2017, held on the 17th and 18th of March was the annual Drama Queensland State conference. The event was both well-received and well-attended (and came in under budget), with many regional and inter-state attendees. It was clear that Drama Queensland continues to find success in its endeavours to provide quality and relevant professional development opportunities for its members. The conference found a new home at QACI this year. This venue provided delegates with excellent break-out spaces, a state of the art performance theatre, plenty of space for our trade displays and excellent catering. The 20-minute key-notes were a success once again and allowed for our delegates to be provided with a range of perspectives and innovative ideas. Another highlight was the historical tribute entitled ‘Plight of the Pillars’ where the extraordinary work of our life members was highlighted and the beginnings of Drama Queensland retold. The workshops and presentations were relevant, engaging and catered for primary all the way through to tertiary educators. Queensland Music Festival Youth Touring Program’s lunchtime performance of Fair Play was very popular and a great addition to the conference. 2017 Gala Event The Forty and Fabulous gala event following the opening evening of the conference was a wonderful chance to publicly acknowledge the work that Drama Queensland and it committee members past and present have done over the last 40 years. It was an opportunity for new and old friends to gather, reminisce and celebrate. Many thanks to QUT for the use of the Z-Block Rooftop – magic view of the city! 2017’ Nuts and Bolts’ The Nuts and Bolts Workshop for new and beginning teachers to Drama education was re-introduced this year and held on the 4th of November at Brigidine College with over 40 delegates attending – a great turn out! For those that attended, it was the chance to further develop their skills as Drama teachers. Workshops based around drama games, curriculum and the elements were provided for attendees as well as a nearly 2-hour long panel discussion – the questions kept coming. This event was a reminder about the value of targeted professional development for early-career teachers. Special thanks to committee members Stephanie, Naomi, Melissa, Dana and Hayley for giving up your Saturday to share your knowledge and expertise.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018

State Conference - Planning for EMBRACE 18 is well-underway! The conference will take place at QACI again and will be on the 9th and 10th of March. With the introduction of the new senior syllabus and national curriculum participants will be challenged to think about the possibilities for Drama education in the future and the opportunities for new and innovative work to occur in the classroom. The conference will run in much the same format as 2017 as this has been a popular structure and provides delegates with varied workshop options. Expressions of Interest have now closed and the conference team are in the stages of putting together the programme.

Page 18: Drama Queensland Date: Tuesday 28 November 2016 Time: 5 ...€¦ · Portfolio Project/A ctivity Highlights 2016 /2017 It has been a busy and exciting 2017 for Drama Queensland, beginning

Nuts and Bolts – This workshop will once again be on offer next year as a workshop that addresses the needs of those who are new to Drama education and those wishing to up-skill themselves. Regional Round-Up – At this stage, professional development for our regional members is something that is being considered for next year. It would allow those in regional areas the opportunity to engage in professional development and networking.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Continue to work with publications on advertising all PD opportunities for DQ across all information

channels – ensure that information is provided in a timely manner • Work with Sam on ways to further include and resource our regional members • Maintain the Term 1 date for our annual State Conference – well-received and members are happy with

this time of year. The twilight Friday and full day Saturday program remains a popular option. • Continue the partnership with QACI as our State Conference venue into the future and ensure a ‘tech’

employee is once again hired for the duration of the conference (great for trouble-shooting problems) • Consider holding the Nuts and Bolts workshop earlier in the year – this may help with increasing its

numbers. Work more closely with university liaisons with regards to getting information about this PD opportunity out to prospective members.

I would like to thank all those on the Drama Queensland committee, particularly my comrades in the Professional Development portfolio Melanie Griffith and Hayley Elliot-Maclure for their support with the ever-growing list that was my requests, Katrina Toreenbeek and Alaana Sheppard for their expertise in absolutely everything, but specifically all things conference. And of course, our fearless leader Dana Holden for her ability to be everywhere and anywhere, her wisdom and endless support this year. I would also like to acknowledge all of our workshop presenters throughout the year for their generous spirit and to DQ members for attending our events. We are so fortunate to be in such a strong and supportive community. I move that my report be accepted.

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 • We have had the absolute pleasure of working to support Emma Funnell in her role as VP for PD. Emma is

incredibly organized and is always forward planning for upcoming events. The success of the 2017 ‘Forty and Fabulous’ conference was a testament to her commitment and attention to detail as a VP.

• The conference was held at QACI which worked well as a venue and was well received by delegates. The conference was full of inspiring key note speakers and thought-provoking sessions that refreshed the delegates and gave them lots of new ideas to try in the classroom.

• The ‘Forty and Fabulous’ Gala was also a huge success. It was held on the rooftop of the new QUT Creative Industries building, and it quite literally was a ‘fabulous’ night. It was particularly lovely to see both past, present and future DQ members all in the same room sharing stories and reminiscing. It was a reminder of the hard work that has gone into the continuation of DQ’s success.

• Nuts and Bolts proved to be a sorely needed professional development opportunity for beginning teachers of Drama, proved by the intense Q & A that ran way over time and the delegates coming from as far as Toowoomba to attend. Not only was this an excellent PD, but was also a source of new memberships.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 • Planning is well underway for the 2018 conference ‘Embrace’- which is already looking super exciting! • Ideas for 2018’s Nuts and Bolts are already being tossed around, and this PD opportunity will again be run

in the second half of the year.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Regular communication with your VP is essential for this role, as well as a commitment to attending

meetings and supporting the DQ team. • Promote DQ Professional development opportunities among your professional networks, and make people

aware of the good work being done and what is on offer through the association. • It has been a pleasure working on the 2017 DQ committee and Melanie looks forward to future

involvement with DQ, and Drama NSW (my new home state) while Hayley hopes to be dialling in from Doomadgee!

PORTFOLIO Vice President - Communications NAME/S Stephanie Tudor

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 In 2017 the Communications team has once again produced a variety of publications to inform, entertain and inspire our members.

Being our 40th year the Journal this year included articles that looked back at our history as well as looking forward to all of the changes and innovative practice that we can look forward to. This was compiled and edited by Kim Sullivan and David Jackson who did a fabulous job on this. We also worked with Rachel Rolf this year to graphically design the journal which resulted in a very successful new look and feel for the journal.

Our online publications, DQ News and Musesheet have been looked after Daniela Clever and Melissa Handley respectively. Thank you to both of these ladies for their continued commitment and work throughout the year.

Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to Daniela tonight. Daniela has been on the DQ committee for the past four years in the Communications portfolio. Daniela will be sorely missed, not only because of her commitment and willingness to always lend a hand without complaint but because of her good humour, generous nature, professional manner and simply that she is a wonderful person to work with. • Assisted with the State Conference Next through social media. • Worked closely with the Executive Committee to ensure DQ continues to be a successful and viable

organization for its members. • Increased our online presence throughout the year with a boost of 300 new likes on Facebook and 200 new

followers on Instagram. • Continued to build readership for our publications: DQ News, Musesheet, Journal and continual updating of

our social media platforms. • Supported and trained up new committee member Melissa to create, edit and send out online publication

(Musesheet) • Presented at Nuts and Bolts • Supported Journal in publishing through proofreading.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 • Finalize our publications for the year, DQ News December and Musesheet. • Continue to post on various social media platforms. Continue to promote and focus on networking within

regions

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Continue to build relationships with our Industry Partners whom advertise and provide relevant

information for all of our publications. • Continue to use our current websites to produce our online content: JooMag to produce Museheet and

MailChimp for DQ News. • Continue to build our presence within the regional communities. Build stronger relationships with these

areas to ensure that they are continually catered for a represented. • Continue to work to current publication timelines to ensure Publications are released on time and adhere

to deadlines with Industry Partners.

PORTFOLIO Journal

NAME/S David Jackson/Kim Sullivan

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 This year saw the publication of the 40th volume of the Drama Queensland Journal. For our valued members, Kim and I were very excited to oversee this publication from planning to delivery. As this was such a special edition, we wanted to pay homage to the industry experts, long-standing/life members and of course some of our most highly valued educators. This journal edition featured; the President’s Speech 2017 Conference by Dana Holden; 40 Years and Still Counting: A Tribute to QADIE / Drama Queensland and Life Members by Life Members: John O’Toole, Brad Haseman, Christine Comans, Howard Cassidy, Shay Ryan, Joan Cassidy, Sandra Gattenhof, Debb Wall & Madonna Stinson; What’s Love Got to Do With it?: Assessment Experiences in Senior Secondary Drama by Dr Rachael Jacobs; Tapping into the Ghosts of Theatre Past to Rediscover the Spirit of Theatre NEXT by Dr Stephen Carleton; Teachers as Future Builders by Dr Judith McLean; Drama Education and Curriculum — We flexed, what’s next? by Professor Susan Davis and finally a list of Past Presidents of Drama Queensland. The budget did need additional approval from DQ executive for the inclusion of a full colour centre spread that consisted of a photographic montage. We also engaged a new graphic designer, Rachel Rolfe from Lead Based Ink ([email protected]). Rachel was efficient, professional and very easy to work with. She was very flexible; giving us design options for the front cover art and allowing us to make further corrections and additions in the final stages of publication before printing. Despite the journal team being in different locations across the state, David in St George, Kim in Longreach, our fearless leader Stephanie and designer Rachel in Brisbane, we managed to print two weeks later than our planned deadline. We would like to epically thank for Stephanie Coleman for her excellent administration and leadership to ensure the Journal was completed to such a high standard. The journal was well received by all accounts and is a lasting testament to the first 40 years of Drama Queensland.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 • Our next project will be the 2018 Embrace journal. • Once presenters are known we can begin to approach them for possible contributions.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • Approach keynote speakers as soon as they are known with an introductory email, expressing the technical requirements for copy and images for the possible conclusion. • As next year’s conference is titled Embrace, It would be fitting to glean contributions that speak about the changes that are happening in curriculum and assessment of Drama and The Arts subjects as well. • Continue to use Rachel as she is cost effective and very responsive to our requests for revisions and gives plenty of options for cover art. • Consider a journal edition for 2018 that incorporates both academic articles and a variety of shorter contributions from curriculum officers and/or teachers who have embraced the themes. We move that our report be accepted.

PORTFOLIO MUSESHEET NAME/S Melissa Handley

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 In 2017 we have released four issues of Musesheet, one of the end of each term, which has provided an opportunity to reflect on that term and highlight things to forward to across the state. Each issue was created to reflect the ethos in which Drama Queensland was formed provide appropriate information and planning resources to members, both metropolitan and regional. Following the handover of the Musesheet portfolio from Stephanie Tudor, I have followed her recommendations and guidance. I have thoroughly enjoyed compiling each edition to showcase Drama across Queensland in every aspect. Highlights: • The opportunity to interview teachers, artists and Industry Partners about the variety of events and

opportunities in the Arts in Queensland. • Working collaboratively on Musesheet to ensure that each issue is relevant and meeting the needs of all

members. • Learning to use JooMag to create and format Musesheet. • Ensuring that the publication features something for all members including interviews, insights

into industry, curriculum and educational trends, text reviews, learning experiences and more.

Thank you to all of the committee for their support throughout the year. Special thanks to Emma Funnel for all the proofing (and with such speed!) and to Stephanie Tudor for her end assistance in the creation of each edition of Musesheet.

Planning and Forthcoming Portfolio Project/Activities for 2017/2018 • Finalise last edition of Musesheet for 2017.

Recommendations for in-coming committee • To continue to build relationships with our Industry Partners and Drama Queensland members to ensure

Musesheet stays relevant to all members - exploring new sections and topics to include perspectives from all DQ members.

• Continue to use JooMag to produce Musesheet. • Continue to work to timelines to ensure Musesheet is released at the end of every term. I move that my report be accepted.

Portfolio Project/Activity Highlights 2016/2017 • This was my third year on DQ News. • We have continued to use Mailchimp this year for E News. • This year, we continued to implement tighter deadlines for Industry Partners as set out last year. This has

worked well, however, there are still some ads that are not sent in or sent in with the incorrect specifications. This always means that the proposed distribution date is delayed.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION OFFICE AND COMMUNICATIONS Current Details:

• Email: [email protected] • Postal address: PO Box 215 Paddington, Q 4064.

Drama Queensland operates a virtual office, with the major communication channel being email. Recently we cancelled our online fax subscription as we were only receiving limited faxes annually. As a committee it was identified that the financial cost for this program could be used more effectively to support our membership in other areas. This program was also run online, so no different to receiving an email directly to our inbox. Face to face communication with the Business Manager occurs at professional development events and management committee meetings only. For this reason, email is the preferred method of communication with the Business Manager. Drama Queensland does not reside in an office space and is run out of the Business Manager’s home, with both resources and archives stored in a shared storage box with Drama Australia. Both organisations share the costs associated with both storage and insurance. In 2016/2017 Drama Queensland took over the managing of payments of the storage facility, this means that Drama Queensland pays the invoice and then invoices Drama Australia for their ½ share. Due to this change Drama Queensland has seen an increase in Storage fee expenditure within the audited statement of accounts, however, we now receive half of this back.

FINANCIAL REPORT The 2016/2017 audit has been completed by Auditor, Brian Tucker, who was satisfied that the financial report accurately reflects the financial position of the association. In the 2016/2017 financial year Drama Queensland reports a deficit from ordinary activities of -$3, 438.68. Drama Queensland presented a deficit working budget at the 2016 AGM. Positively, Drama Queensland reports a deficit amount smaller than the original $10,000 planned for. The difference in our original planned deficit amount and the actual one reported in our audited statement of accounts can be attributed to Drama Queensland not investing in a major project as planned in the 2016/2017 financial year. Drama Queensland only reports a deficit budget due to the fact that 2 NJ subscription payments, 2 Drama Australia CML payments and our own journal postage and printing payments were doubled due to invoices for 2016 and 2017 being paid in the same financial year period. These payments are not a regular occurrence indicates the positive financial position the association is in. Retained Profits at the end of the 2015/2016 financial year were $83,459.63, which places Drama Queensland in a positive financial position as of September 30 2017. Cash at bank at the end of the Financial Year was $85,343.85 with $6,677.94 payable by Trade Debtors for open invoices. The trade debtor amount presented in 2017 is lower than the amount presented in the previous financial year. All Trade Debtors have been contacted and outstanding income is starting be paid to Drama Queensland.

INCOME

Page 26: Drama Queensland Date: Tuesday 28 November 2016 Time: 5 ...€¦ · Portfolio Project/A ctivity Highlights 2016 /2017 It has been a busy and exciting 2017 for Drama Queensland, beginning

The total income for 2016/2017 was $98,259.91. Key income streams for 2016/2017:

• Our annual State Conference was our main income stream with $50,166.32 coming in from delegate registrations and trade opportunities.

• Industry Partnerships and general advertising opportunities gained the association $10,890.88 in revenue for the 2016/2017 period.

• Our membership fees also make up a large portion of our income with $33,774.37.

EXPENDITURE Total Expenditure in 2016/2017 was $101,698.59. Key expenditure items for 2016/2017:

• State Conference expenditure (including catering, conference management, printing, design) totalled $46,591.19.

• Administration costs (including Business Manager wages) was $18,541.25. • We paid 2 NJ journal subscription and CML fee invoices to Drama Australia in the same financial year

period. This totalled $14,635.00. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STATE CONFERENCE Our Drama Queensland State Conference continued to be financially successful for the organisation. Consistent with the previous 2 years the event was held over 1.5 days, with an additional cocktail party to celebrate the association’s 40th Birthday. Strategic planning, the fact that it was a celebratory year and key partnership deals ensured it was a profitable event. The total income for the 2017 State Conference was $50,166.32 and the total expenditure was $46,591.1. Both income and expenditure were higher than the 2015/2016 financial year and this can be attributed to the growth in delegate numbers and the extra cocktail event to celebrate our 40th birthday. RESOURCES AURELIAN, OUTSIDE THE SQUARE, THE PINK TWINS, BOY GIRL WALL, XLD 3 and SONIC LOOM In the 2016/2017 financial year Drama Queensland saw a decline in all resource sales with an income of $3,591.99 being reported. This decline in revenue can be attributed to the fact our resources have now been on sale for a number of years and a large number of our members have already purchased copies. In the 2016/2017 financial year Drama Queensland explored the option of developing some new member resources and this was included in the working budget. At present the association is still considering this as an option for the future.

ADVERTISING INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS Drama Queensland continues to manage Industry Partnerships with Theatre and Performing Arts Companies and Venues, Educational Institutions, Service Providers and other organisations, under the Business Manager’s portfolio. These valuable and mutually supportive relationships contribute to the organisation in different ways, such as income revenue for the association through advertising packages, in-kind and associated opportunities for Drama Queensland through decreased expenditure for specific items, such as presenter fees and venue hire. In 2016/2017, Drama Queensland’s industry partners included:

• Macrosphere • Queensland Theatre • Youth Touring • La Boite Theatre Company • Homunculus Theatre Company • Behind the Scenes • Playlab • shake & stir • Brisbane Powerhouse • QUT-Gardens Point • USQ Artworx • Flipside Circus • Outside the Square and the Pink Twins • Brisbane Festival

A number of other arts organisations and service providers purchased short term and/or one-off advertising through our online publications, trade displays at the State Conference and inserts in mail outs and/or conference satchels. In 2016/2017 the industry partnerships portfolio generated $10,890.88 in income for the association. We thank all of our Industry Partners for their continued support of our members and the association.

I would like to propose that my Business Manager’s report for 2016/2017 is accepted.
