A Letter from

Like most, I have been a woman of phases. I cruised through elementary and beginning of middle school wearing the god-awful creations my Mother forced upon me. I’m talking printed leggings, turtlenecks, Keds, and mesh headbands – yes, it went there, my friends. Beginning 8th grade, with the loss of one group of friends and initiation into another, I was infatuated with the “emo-kid” persona. It never went too far since my Mother would personally pull me by my earlobes and ground me for life, but I did start shopping at places like Hot Topic for neon leopard print pieces, hair bows, and miscellaneous Hello Kitty items. I also ran through far too many black eyeliners and pairs of classic Converse. Finally, High School came around and I cleansed myself of these trends and began to dress in a way that is not too far off from the way I currently dress: current, feminine, but classic. Just like most of us do, fashion moves in phases. I could not be more excited for the phase it will enter in the upcoming years, so I will do my very best to portray my interpretation of the trends to come. Be prepared for a wide span of color, feminine silhouettes, and neck/hem lines to be a bit more modest. Once an ocean of the rebellious, the world is about to turn their cheek towards the unruly and in favor of the once prevalent structure in society. Now I am aware that this may seem scary, but I vow to try my best to bring this to you in the friendliest way possible.

Enjoy!

XO,

Alyssa Ljubicich

How Far They’ve Come... An interview with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes

Family seems to be close to the heart of Dawes as well, seeing as Taylor’s brother, Griffin is the percussionist. Though most would find constantly being around a sibling too similar to the annoyance felt as children, Goldsmith said, “It’s great!” The two will be moving in together in LA soon, “we’re just like best friends; I don’t treat him like a younger brother.” As for the rest of the band and the dynamic they share, he insist, “we just have really good understanding of each other and we get along really great.”

Well how I curse that western skyline and yet I

thanked it for my start.

Inspired by the sounds of the Grateful Dead and Little Feat, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes is bringing a new pop-edge to American folk music. Though the band has not broken into the top 10 songs on iTunes (yet), “That Western Skyline” was listed among the top 100 songs of the year in Rolling Stone magazine and they have only just begun. “I think that there’s some stuff about us that’s not necessarily of the trend right now, but I’m hoping that will be something that people enjoy and not push away.”

You got that special kind of sadness, you got that

tragic set of charms that only comes from time spent in Los Angeles, makes me wanna wrap

you in my arms

Originating in 2009 in Los Angeles, Dawes is comprised of Taylor Goldsmith, his brother Griffin, Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn. The group has struck a chord with the rock music scene by bringing their soulful lyrics and hearty sound to the table with full force and emotion. Having seen them in Webster Hall last October, there is no doubt that there are absolutely no feelings or emotions spared when performing. Dancing about the stage, Taylor comments, “I don’t mean to make dumb faces…it just sort of happens but if I’m having a good time and I’m running around, it just feels good to me because that means I’m enjoying myself…and jumping like an idiot.” Recently, the band performed at the Newport Music Festival and it had been “maybe the most fun festival,” for the boys on their tour. “People were really open and willing to have a good time...my dad was there so he jumped up and sang and it was fun!”

If you let me be your anchor, I will hold you down.

So if you want to get to know me, follow my smile into its curves

Clearly one of the greatest motivators for the bands existence is the incredibly loyal fans –including myself- that support them indubitably. “When people start singing along, I just start smiling because I can’t help it!” Given their slow incline to success, Goldsmith is more appreciative of his fans, knowing they are there for the long run. “To know that there are a lot of bands that are great and blow up overnight, and that ends up backfiring in some cases…the fans that climb on board the fastest also leave the fastest.” Lucky for the boys, their fans aren’t going anywhere – and can you blame them? It seems that we have a hard time accepting authentic talent into the industry now-a-days, so finding a gem like Dawes truly feels like a diamond in the ruff. “ I Couldn’t be happier about where we are right now…It would be really easy to say we just want to be the biggest band, but in reality, I feel like the way things are unfolding, we play to the people we want to play to and it’s at the right pace for us. “
