Tim Malone, Principal

Dear Parents,

I am happy to report that 79% of our students made the honor roll for the fall 2014 semester. Such a high

percentage is not achievable without the support from parents at home. Thank you for being involved in your student’s academic life.

I also want to thank all the parents who came

out to clean and organize the theater and our

storage room. This was done over three days,

including an entire weekend. Thanks to these

parents, we are now better able to access

materials for set building and store items for

future set builds.

On March 17 and 18, we will have the very

important California High School Exit Exam

administration. If you are a 10th grade parent,

please be sure your son/daughter gets plenty

of sleep and is at school on time so he/she

does not have to rush in order to begin the

exam.

In March, we will also be treated to a

production of “Shrek Jr.” The Beginning and

Intermediate Drama students, along with Mr.

Soltus, have been working hard in preparing

for opening day on March 27. Please come

out and enjoy the show.

Sincerely,

Tim Malone

Many Thanks to Our Volunteers!

Theatre Clean-Up

An extra special thank you to everyone involved with the January theatre clean-up. Over 3 full days, a 40 yard dumpster was filled with old & broken items, storage areas were cleaned and organized, the stage area was cleaned, and supplies were stored. Over 120+ man-hours were donated! Jeff , Lovena & Kimi DeCamp, Jim, Aileen, Cameron & Charlie Day, Allyson Wadkins, Julie Barkley, Molly Enderton, Valeri & Dennis Mathews, Jenny Warner, Tracey Fuschich. Thank you to the MCAA staff Gabe Coombs, Bonny Vipperman, Paul Vang and Tim Malone who made it possible.

Hello MCAA Students and Parents,

Second semester is well under way and believe it or not it is almost time to start thinking about classes for next year! Later this month or sometime in April I will be talking to students about their plans for next year. The process will be a little different this year in that

students will be asked to take their registration paperwork home to discuss with a parent/guardian so watch for that in the coming weeks. If you have questions about the process or your child’s course selection please feel free to contact me.

QuickReg Program: This series of Saturday workshops is designed to help seniors who plan to enroll next year with the Yuba College registration process. A representative from Yuba visited the Economics classes and explained the program prior to the first set of workshops. Those students who completed the first phase should have received an appointment and study guide for the upcoming Placement Exam workshop (March 14th or 21st). Encourage your senior to take time to prepare for this incredibly important test…it could save them time and money in the future! Next up: Meeting with a Yuba counselor and priority registration for summer/fall classes at the final workshop on April 25th.

Juniors who took the PSAT in the fall received their results last month. In addition to their results they received a lot of useful resources to help them better prepare for the SAT. Students should take advantage of these personalized resources as well as online test prep resources such as Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.com) and Exam Focus (www.examfocus.com). Any juniors planning to attend a 4-year university directly after high school are strongly encouraged to take the SAT this spring. The upcoming spring SAT dates are May 2nd and June 6th and students are typically required to register a month in advance. Students can register for the SAT, find practice materials and more information on the CollegeBoard website (www.collegeboard.org).

Reminder: Sophomores will be taking the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for the first time this month on March 17th and 18th. Please make every effort to have your child in school, well rested and prepared to take this very important test. Math and English teachers have been working with all students on skills and strategies needed to successfully pass the CAHSEE. A minimum passing score is 350 (380 is proficient) and once a section has been passed it does not have to be taken again.

Seniors: Want free money to attend college?? More and more scholarship opportunities are becoming available. Seniors are encouraged to give me their e-mail address if they would like to receive scholarship updates. They will be noted in the bulletin; however, more detailed information regarding the requirements will be sent to those students who provide an e-mail address. Additionally, students are encouraged to check the Scholarship Binder in the Counseling Office regularly. Some current local scholarships: Sutter-Yuba Realtors Association, Marysville Unified Teachers Association, Mary Aaron Memorial, Rideout Foundation, John & Freda Monnot and much more.

And finally, our two remaining Student of the Quarter selections for this year were Alayna Koen (2nd Quarter) and Angelica Gomer (3rd Quarter). Congratulations!! Happy Spring, Christy Spade

ScienceThe 8th graders are learning about

acids, bases and organic molecules. Lab experiments and an upcoming research project are keeping students engaged and learning. In chemistry, we will be having a guest speaker from the California Air Resources Board to speak with us about air quality in California. He is a professional chemist who will also impart words of wisdom about college and careers in the sciences.

On April 1st, a group of 24 8th grade

girls will be attending a Math and Science

Conference sponsored by the American

Association of University Women (AAUW) at

Yuba College. The ladies will attend

seminars presented by women who have

careers in the fields of math and science;

ranging from forensic scientists to surgeons

to engineers. It’s a great opportunity!

On a personal note, I will be having

a baby in early May! The substitute until the

end of the year will be Ellie Oliver, who is an

MCAA alumnus and has a Bachelor’s of

Science degree in Biology.

She is excited to be teaching science in my

absence and will do a great job.
