StandforChangeOnFriday,May4millionsofstudentsacrossthecountryparcipatedinStand4ChangeDaytobringawarenesstotheissueofbullying.JoiningLakeOrionschools,studentsfromOxfordschoolsdemonstratedtheircommitmenttopunganendtobullying.Eachoneofthenineteenschoolsinbothdistrictswasassignedtheirownword.OnFridaymorning,studentsateachschoolwentoutsidetostandtogethertoformtheirword;collecvelytheyformedthefollowingmessage:

Aeranextensiveinterviewprocess,theLakeOrionBoardofEducaonunanimouslyappointedStephenHawleyasLOHSPrincipal.NinetythreeapplicantsappliedfortheprincipalposionthatbecameopenaerSophiaLafayeereceivedthedistrictsDirectorofTechnologyposioninDecember.Aercarefulreview,acommieeselectedfivecandidatestointerviewfortheposionwithHawleyrisingtothetopasthenumberonecandidate.HawleyhasbeenprincipalatSeitzMiddleSchoolinRiverviewsince2010.HewaspreviouslydirectorofathlecsandassistantprincipalatRiverviewHighSchool,andtaughtinRiverviewbeforethatfor11years.HewilltakeoverthereinsofLOHSonJuly1.

FreshmanAcademyfor20122013HighschoolstaandadministraonhavebeenworkingdiligentlytodevelopaFreshmanAcademytobeimplementedthiscomingfall.Transionfrommiddleschooltohighschoolisapivotalyear.Thistransionyearisimportantbecauseitistheyearthathasthegreatestinfluenceonhighschoolgraduaon.Therefore,highschoolstahavecommiedtoensuringthatallstudentsenteringthehighschoolgetotothebeststartpossible.InformaonisavailableontheDistrictswebsite.
OaklandSchoolsHonorsMaryJoBurchart!InJune,theOaklandCountySchoolBoardsAssociaonwillbehonoringLakeOrionSchoolBoardPresident,MaryJoBurchart,for12yearsofservice.MaryJowasoriginallyelectedtotheBoardofEducaonin2000andservedasTrustee,TreasurerandVicePresidentbeforebecomingthePresident.
Shehasservedonmanycommieesduringhertenureandiscurrentlyinvolvedwiththedistrict'sPolicyCommiee.Beforebecomingaboardmember,MaryJowasanacvePTOmemberandservedontheCommieefortheDevelopmentofOakviewMiddleSchool,the2000BondCommiee,herneighborhoodassociaonboard,aswellashavinghelpedtobuildtheplaystructureatFriendshipPark.SheiscurrentlyinvolvedwiththeBandBoosters.ThankyouPresidentBurchartforthemanyyearsofservicewithLakeOrionstudents!
BusSTARProgramLakeOrionbusdriversareconnecngwithstudentsandassisngtheelementaryschoolsbyprovidingonetoonetutoringduringtheiravailabilitybetweentheirmorningandaernoonbus
routes.Underthesupervisionoftheprincipalandclassroomteacher,driversarevolunteeringtoassiststudentswhomayneedextrahelpwithreading,mathorothersubjects.

DistrictReceivesMSBOMeridianAwardofExcellence"TheMSBOMeridianAwardofExcellenceisaspecialrecognionawardpresentedbytheMichiganSchoolBusinessOcialsacknowledgingsuccessfulpraccesinareasofschoolmanagement.LakeOrionCommunitySchoolswasawardedthisrecognionforit'sentryfortherecentlyformed"TransportaonAdvisoryCommiee".ThiscommieeisaBoardofEducaonapprovedcommieecomprisedofparents,schoolpersonnel,localpoliceandgovernmentrepresentaveschargedwithadvisingadministraonandtheBoardofEducaonontransportaonandstudentsafetyissues.JohnFitzgerald,AssistantSuperintendentBusinessandFinance,acceptedthebeaufulcrystalawardonbehalfofthedistrictattheannualMSBOConferenceheldatCOBOHallonMay2,2012.Theawardalsoincludesa$1,500studentscholarshiptobepresentedtotheschooldistrictattheschoolboardmeengonJune6,2012.

SpecialOlympicsBasketballGameTheenrestudentbodyhadtheopportunitytowitnessaspecialmomentinmewhenthestudentsfromOxfordtookonourLakeOrionspecialeducaonstudentsinabasketballgame.Oxfordscoredthemostpointsduringthegamebutanyonepresentwastherealwinner.StudentsintheLOSTARclasseseachsponsoredastudentfrombothLakeOrionandOxfordprovidingindividualsupportwithsignsandpersonaljerseysprovidedtoallplayers.Studentsraisedapprox.$850.00tocoverthecostofthejerseysanddonangthebalancetoourSpecialOlympicsprogram.TheleadershipclasshelpedprovideaddionalfundingwiththeirsaleofLOVEORIONshirtsduringlunch.AllprofitsfromtheseshirtsarebeingdonatedtotheSpecialOlympicsProgram.
OnSaturday,April28,theLakeOrionCommunitySchoolsEarlyChildhoodDepartmenthostedthe6thAnnualGreatStartParentConferenceandResourceFairattheCERCbuilding.LakeOrionCommunitySchoolsalongwiththeMichiganDepartmentofEducaonGreatParentsGreatStart,theGreatStartCollaboraveandOaklandSchoolsoeredtheconferenceFREEtoallparentswithchildrenbirththroughfivethroughoutthecounty.ThisalldayconferencebeganwithakickopresentaonandtheninvitedparentstoaendthreeBreakoutSessions.Alongwiththeparenteducaonsessionsandtables,theaendeesreceivedbreakfasttreatsandlunchwhichwasprovidedbytheLakeOrionCommunitySchoolsFoodServiceDepartment.AllchildcareserviceswereprovidedbytheEarlyChildhoodDepartmentemployees.Over300parentsandchildrenaendedtheeventthisyear.

ScrippsBandintheNewsOnApril14,75ScrippsBandstudentsparcipatedin58eventsatSoloandEnsembleFesvalatOakviewMS.63%oftheeventsearnedthehighestrang,aI(FirstDivision)rang.OnMay1112,theScrippsCadetBandtraveledtoChicagotoparcipateinaclinicwithauniversityconductoratVanderCookCollegeofMusic.Theybroughtbackmanygreattoolstofurtherimprovetheirmusicalskills.Theclinicianremarkedthattheywerebeerpreparedthanmostofthehighschoolbandsthatcometodoclinicswiththem.WhileinChicago,thestudentsalsoaendedamusicalandvisitedtwomuseums.TheyrepresentedLakeOrionwithexemplarycizenshipfortheduraonofthetrip.

StadiumDrivesDancePartytoBuildThisCityUndertheguidanceofthirdgradeteacherMrs.Lareau,StadiumDrivedevelopedapartnershipwiththeDDAandVillageofLakeOriontohelpfundasignandcommunitygardenatMeeksParklocatedintheVillageofLakeOrion.TheyheldaDanceAThonwith4hoursofmusicandmovementtoraisemoneyforthisproject.MeeksParkisa1.62acrepark,locatedalongPaintCreek,intheeasternporonoftheVillage.ThenewestoftheVillageparks,thelandwasobtainedinAugust1985whenRalphMeeksoldittotheVillagefor$1.00.MeeksParkhasapproximately600feetalongthebanksofPaintCreekandisaccessiblebywalkways.StadiumDriveElementarySchooloftheArtsisexcitedwiththeircommunitypartnershiptosupportMeeksParkinDowntownLakeOrion!
WaldonAdoptsaRoadStudentsfromWaldonMiddleSchoolTeam8Badoptedaseconofroadwaytohelpthemlearnabouttheirenvironmentandtheuseofnaturalresources.TheschoolworkedinconjunconwiththeOaklandCountyRoadCommissionandtheirAdoptaRoadprogram,agreeingtocleanupWaldonRoadbetweenJoslynandM24.Studentsworkedintwogroups,withthemorninggroupcleaningthesouthsideoftheroadandtheaernoongroupcleaningthenorthside.Theyrecordedthetypesoftrashtheyfound,tobeusedinaclassroomacvity.Whenthegroupwasn'tcleaningtheroad,theywereonatouroftheEagleValleyLandfillandtheGMOrionPlantPowerhouse,learninghowwasteismanagedandhowthegasproducedbydecomposingtrashinthelandfillisusedtoheatandcooltheOrionPlant.ThedaywasmadepossiblebyaUnitedWayAcademicServiceLearningGrant.Itwasaninteresngday,learningallabouttrashandalternavesourcesofenergy.
OperationFORKPaintCreekElementaryStudentCouncilstartedacommunityserviceprojectcalledOperaonFORK(FeedORionKids).Theysawmanyoftheirpeersgoinghungryintheeveninghours,weekendsandoverextendedbreaks.Tomakeadierence,studentsbroughtinfooditemstobeputintobasketsandgiventofamiliesinneed.
