Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is designed to launch automatically when you start Windows allowing you to record DISCs whenever you wish. Ifyou do not wish to record DISCs immediately after starting Windows, you can set a pre-determined time delay before the applicationstarts.

This feature is called "Delayed Resident", because it will delay the execution of the application after starting Windows until the pre-set"Delay" time has expired. For example, if you set the delay time to 300 seconds, the application will load approximately 5 minutes afterWindows starts. (After about 5 minutes passes you will see Drag'n Drop CD+DVD's BOXes appear on screen) This delay time can beadjusted using [Task tray] - right-click the [Drag'n Drop CD+DVD] icon - [Setting] - [Delayed resident time].From Version 3 onwards, inaddition to using the start tray icon to display the Settings screen, you can now also access the Settings screen by right clicking in abox, and at the top of the displayed menu, select "Common menu" -> "Settings".

Basic OperationBack Next

The basic operation of Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is to drag, drop & burn data to a CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW recordable media disc.

1. Let's create a compilation Audio CD.From your collection of Audio CDs, you can select albums and tracks that you wish to make a compilation Audio CD from. Insert oneAudio CD at a time into the DISC Recorder drive, (Note: When you insert an Audio CD, your default CD player will launch automaticallyto being playback. Close your default CD player application before running Drag'n Drop CD+DVD) double click "My computer", selectthe drive icon which represents your DISC Recorder and drag and drop the icon into the Music BOX. The "Audio CD Layout Window"will launch automatically. Select the desired track(s) and click the single green arrow to export the audio information into the Audio CDLayout on the right hand side of the window. Repeat this process for the rest of your Audio CDs until you have exported all of thedesired tracks. You can also select, drag and drop the drive icon for the DISC Recorder from Windows Explorer instead of "MyComputer" or simply drag and drop audio data in WMA or WAV file format to the Music BOX to create a compilation Audio CD. Forfurther details about creating compilation Audio CDs from WMA & WAV files, please see "Let's make Audio CD".

2.  Let's back up a DISCYou can back up your DISCs very easily. Simply insert the original DISC that you wish to make a backup copy of and either drag anddrop the drive icon belonging to the source DISC from "My Computer" or Windows Explorer to the DISC Backup BOX or double-click theDISC Backup BOX, select the "DISC Backup Option" tab and select the location of the source drive. For further information on how tobackup the DISC, please refer to "Let's backup DISC".

3. Let's write data files and foldersSelect files and folders that you would like to record onto a DISC, drag and drop them into the Data BOX and when the word, "Ready",is displayed on the BOX, you may begin recording. Click the orange arrow button on the upper right-hand corner of the BOX to beginrecording the DISC. You can also add additional files and folders to the Data BOX or 'Data Layout' window before recording the targetDISC. Before recording, insert a blank CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW disc into the DISC Recorder drive and click the orange arrow buttonon the BOX. For further information on Data DISC recording, please refer to, "Let's make a Data DISC".

Display Progress Dialog in Recording Clicking on the disc create button initiates recording to the DISC. When recording a large amount of data, sometimes the progresspercentage display at the top right of the Drag'n Drop CD BOX and the write progress status at the bottom of the BOX do not showenough detail to be useful. This has been improved with Drag'n Drop CD Ver2.10. Now a "Write Progress Dialog" box is displayed onthe screen when a recording session has been initiated, showing an accurate detail view of the session progress.

If you do not wish to see this dialog box after initiating a recording session, simply click on the "Close" button. Closing this window willhave no effect on the progress of the recording session. If you wish to record an Audio CD, select, drag and drop audio files(WMA's and/or WAVs) or Audio CD tracks (CD-DA tracks associated with an Audio CD) into the 'Audio CD' BOX. 1. Common menu

You can also click on the top of the box to display or select the same menu as that displayed when right clicking on the Drag'n DropCD+DVD start tray icon. You can select and change settings to functions which are not dependent on each box.

2. Start recording

This sub-menu option does the same thing as pressing the "Start record" button , the orange arrow in the upper-right hand corner ofthe Music BOX.

3. Open layout

It is possible to load Layout files that were created by Music BOX or "Audio CD layout window". The layout information is not an audiofile. but it contains information about which audio files are used and in what order.

4. Save layout

It is possible to save layout information for audio data dropped in the Music BOX or information edited in "Audio CD layout window".Saved layout information can be retrieved from "Open layout". Please note that once the "Record" button is pushed and an Audio CD issuccessfully created, information such as audio file data is erased automatically. The layout information of a Music disc is cleared whenAudio CD creation is completed successfully. If you want to save layout information, choose "Save layout" before pushing the "Record"button.

5. Edit layout

"Edit layout" launches the "Audio CD Layout" window, which allows you to extract digital audio data from an Audio CD and record it to acompilation Audio CD. This menu can also be accessed by double-clicking the Music BOX.

6. Clear layout

This sub-menu option clears the entries in the Music BOX. After recording an Audio CD from audio files or audio tracks, the audio trackentries in the Music BOX are automatically cleared. If you wish to cancel the "Audio CD Layout" before recording a CD, select thismenu option to clear the dropped audio files.

7. Clear all temporary files

This sub-menu option clears all temporary files created in the Music BOX. Usually after extracting digital audio information to the harddrive (this information is stored in temporary files and saved to a Drag'n Drop CD+DVD folder) and then recording an Audio CD, theassociated temporary files are automatically deleted. If you happen to cancel the Audio CD creation process after extracting audiotracks, the information will remain on your hard drive in temporary files. Use of this sub-menu option clears those temporary files thatremain after this type of cancellation.

8. Refresh capacity

Usually the remaining capacity of a used DISC (in this case a used DISC is a multi-session formatted CD-R or CD-RW disc which hasnot been closed) will be displayed as a yellow bar on the Music or Data BOX. If an automatic refresh (eject or insert disc) does notdisplay the correct remaining capacity, use this sub-menu option to display the correct information. (Note: If a blank CD-R/RW orDVD-R/RW disc is inserted into the DISC Recorder drive, the remaining capacity displayed on a desktop BOX will be gray, meaningthat the Recordable media has not been written to yet; if the remaining capacity displayed is a full red bar, the Recordable media is fullor closed and can no longer be written to).

9. Erase RW disc

Page 14

If the CD-RW or DVD-RW media inserted in the DISC Recorder already has data written to it, this sub-menu option erases or formatsthe data on the RW medium to return it to a blank state. There are two options for erasing:, -Quick and Full. Quick erase only erasesthe control area of the disc so the operation executes very fast. If you wish to erase the entire disc, use the 'Full erase' option. (Note:The time it takes to complete a 'Full Erase' procedure, depends on the maximum write speed of your DISC recorder and RW medium. Also, please note that most home stereo CD players cannot play CD-RW discs formatted in CD-DA: Compact Disc Digital Audio).

- Forced EraseIn some cases, Windows will fail to recognize an RW Media disc after a failed write session, and attempting to erase this disc and startover will not work since the the "Start" button on the Drag'n Drop CD+DVD "Erase RW disc" is not activated (grayed out). In somecases, it is possible to perform a "Forced Erase" for this type of disc. Follow the steps below to attempt erasing a disc with thisproblem.

If the CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW media inserted in the DISC Recorder already has data written to it, this sub-menu option erases orformats the data on the RW medium to return it to a blank state. There are two options for erasing:, -Quick and Full. Quick erase onlyerases the control area of the disc so the operation is very fast.

- Recording type

There are three recording types: "Test only", "Record only" and "Test and if OK, record". You can select the necessary type when youstart recording. However, when writing to DVD+RW/+R media in a drive that supports this media type, testing is not required, as writingis guaranteed when using a DVD+RW/+R drive, even without a test write. If you specify "Test Only" or "Write After Testing" when usingDVD+RW/+R media in Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, then a screen stating that this is not possible will be displayed before writing, and this willask you if you wish to continue with writing. The "Record and verify" function automatically verifies the written data. "Verify read only" attempts to read the written data to see if thereare any read errors. "Byte compare" compares the written data against what was written from the source drive. If there is only one DISCrecorder, the "Byte compare" is not possible, so this function is grayed out.

- Recording type

There are three recording types: "Test only", "Record only" and "Test and if OK, record". You can select the necessary type when youstart recording. The "Record and verify" function automatically verifies the written data. "Verify read only" attempts to read the written data to see if thereare any read errors. "Byte compare" compares the written data against what was written from the source drive.

The verify function on other general writing software checks only physical sectors, whereas the verify on Drag'n Drop CD+DVD has theadvanced feature of mounting the written disc in the operating system, so that it can check that the written data is able to be readcorrectly. As a result, in some environments, the OS may display a popup window upon detecting the insertion of a disc, and theautorun function may run a program. If this happens, please close the program.

- Close disc

Data CDs can be "closed." Closing a disc prevents any further writing or modifying of the CD, even if extra space is still available. Oncethe disc is "Closed", it cannot be re-opened to continue writing, so you must use this feature with care.

(Data CD Options)

- File System

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD supports the "ISO9660 Level 1" and "Joliet" file systems. The default file system is "Joliet". This allows you torecord files and folders with long file names.

- Cache size

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is designed to record with most suitable cache setting. Cache size is the size of the buffered data on the cacheto be stored prior to the actual data recording. Bigger cache size increases the level of safety, but also increases the total time neededto record. Reducing the cache size shortens the amount of recording time, but requires faster PC. When specifying the size, if there arefiles smaller than that size in the group of files that are to be written, then these files undergo pre-processing, where they are convertedinto an image, in order to prevent buffer underruns.

- CD-ROM Mode

The CD-ROM can be either "Mode1"or "Mode2". Normally, either setting is fine. If you encounter any problems, changing to the othersetting may help.

- Set one of the following options, before writing additional data to a used disc.

This sub-menu enables you to either add to the existing data or delete existing data and start new session all over again. If thischeckbox is OFF (no check), then the existing data will be ignored and the data on the CD will only be the data currently being written. If this checkbox is ON (checked), then the newly written data will be appended to the existing data. If the existing data has the samefolder names or file names as the appended data, then the following rule will apply.

- Overwrite exiting file and folders

If there are similar file or folder names on the disc already, they will be overwritten by the new files and folders currently being recorded.

- Do not overwrite existing files and folders

If there are similar file or folder names on the disc already, then the existing files and folders with that/those name(s) will not beoverwritten. If the same files or folders are often updated, use the overwrite option rather than this one to prevent data loss from files andfolders not being updated.

- Prompt me first before overwriting existing files with the same name.

This option prompts you to confirm overwrites of old files or folders with new files or folders of the same name.

Notes on creating Music CDsBack Next

Notes on creating Music CDs Using CD-R media:A CD-RW recorder can record on CD-R discs and other CD-RW discs. CD-R discs are inexpensive but cannot be re-recorded withmusic or data. CD-RW discs can be re-recorded up to 1000 times.Almost all consumer audio CD players can play back CD-R discs. CD-RWs, on the other hand, may not be compatible with someconsumer audio players. This is due to the low reflectivity of the CD-RW disc--, some audio players are not designed to handle this. You should check what kind of discs your player can handle.

Once you write a music CD, you cannot add to it:Music CD (CD-DA) specifications do not allow songs to be added to media after the data has been written, because data is writtenusing DAO (Disc At Once), in which all songs are written in one session. Because Drag'n Drop CD+DVD adheres to these standards, music CDs are written using this method. Therefore, when creating a music CD, commence writing only after selecting all the musicdata that you wish to write to the CD. In Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, in order that you do no use valuable media before you understand thesespecifications, a message window is displayed warning you of this in advance. If you understand these specifications, select the check box that states "Do not show this message again" in the window that isdisplayed, to turn this message off.

You can organize files and folders once they have been dragged and dropped onto the Data BOX. You can move files or folders intodifferent folders, or rename files. Simply double-click the Data BOX to start up the data layout window. You will see the files and folders in a layout similar to Windows Explorer. You can also change the location of the files and folders.

Changing the location of files and folders, or changing the names in the data layout window will not change the names and locations ofthe source files and folders where they originated. Deleting files and folders in the data layout window will delete the original files andfolders on the hard drive either.

Options:

You can change settings for writing discs, and settings for CD and DVD. In previous versions, if you wished to change these settingswhile editing in the data layout window, you were required to close the window and then change the settings in the box. However, fromVersion 3 onwards, you can also use this button to change these settings directly from the data layout window.

Total Size: During editing, the total amount of data that is to be recorded is displayed at the bottom right of the screen. Because this displays thetotal size of all the data, including fractions and management data, instead of merely displaying a simple total of individual file sizes, this total may differ somewhat from the size as indicated on the desktop. You can check if the total logical size of the file would beexpected to fit onto a single DISC, but may be in fact too large to do so.

Mouse Operation: You can select files and folders with the mouse and drag them to different locations. This does not change the configuration of files andfolders on the PC hard disc. Files and folders that have been moved are written as is onto the DISC. However, attempting to move theseto a location that is not logically supported will display a "You can not drop here" error message.

Volume Label Setting: You can set the Volume Label for data DISCs. Volume labels may be set in the data layout window. When creating a DISC, Drag'nDrop CD+DVD automatically creates a Volume Label based on time data, however you can change this to a more meaningful textstring.Either double click the Data BOX, or right click in the Data BOX, and from the menu that appears, select "Edit Layout". You should seea text string such as "20010112151733" on the first line of the folder tree, on the left of the data layout window that appears on thescreen. Either right click here, or give the area focus, then click the "Name Change" button. Note that disc specifications mean thatcertain characters and symbols may not be used. For detailed information regarding characters that can be used in volume labels, please refer to "About File System".

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD comes with a unique feature called multi volume. This function splits files and folder entries in the data layoutwindow across several DISCs if there is too much data in the data layout window for one DISC to hold. Please note, if a single file isbigger than the blank DISC size, multi volume will not work.

By pressing the record button, Drag'n Drop CD+DVD estimates how many blank DISCs will be required, so you can have several blankDISCs handy. This is only an estimate and may differ from the actual number of DISCs required. It is always a good idea to have a fewextra blank DISCs.

Writing Additional Data to DVD MediaBack Next

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD can now write additional data to DVDs. Here, we explain writing data to different types of DVD media.

DVD media types supported by Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, and additional writing methods for each of these types are explained below.

Please refer to the Additional Writing to DVD Media at the end of this section.

• DVD-R Media

Uses the multi-border method.

• DVD-RW Media

Uses the restricted overwrite method.

• DVD+R Media

Uses the multi-session method.

• DVD+RW Media

Uses the single-session method.

Drag'n Drop CD+DVD uses the UDF+Joliet+ISO bridge file system to write additional data. Additionally, where the "Finalize disc" optionhas not been selected in Drag'n Drop CD+DVD writing options, then data is written using the format suited to the media (DVD-R/RW,DVD+RW/+R) as listed above, in order that data can be added at a later stage. It is not possible to add data to a DVD media that hasbeen written with a method not suited to its media format.

In the version of Drag'n Drop CD+DVD that is bundled with PCs and drives, data addition with Data Box is written using the incrementalwrite method. Where the "Finalize disc" option has been selected in the writing settings, data will automatically be written using DAOmode.

* Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is bundled with PCs from certain makers and with some hardware; however, these may not supportwriting additional data onto DVD-R/RW.

Notes on Adding Data to DVD Media.

When writing additional data to DVD-R and DVD+R media, limitations in the Windows system used to read the media mean it may notbe able to read that additionally written data, therefore please read the following points carefully.

When the disc is to be read on a variety of OS environments, we recommend that instead of writing additional data, you write allrequired data to the disc in the initial writing session. Additionally, where it is important to be able to read the data under differentenvironments, we recommend that in the Data Box option settings, you ensure that the "Finalize disc" check box is selected under“Write settings”. In Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, if this setting is enabled, then the media will automatically be written using DAO (Disc AtOnce) mode for the initial writing.

• Using a 16 Bit OS

Please be aware that in general, you can not use 16 bit OS environments such as Windows98SE and WindowsMe to read any dataadded to DVD-R or DVD+R. This is because of problems with the reader driver in the OS. Because data added when using a 16 bit OScan be correctly read and handled in other environments, Drag'n Drop CD+DVD permits the actual additional writing of data even under16 bit OS environments.

If you are using a 16 bit OS, we recommend that you use either DVD-RW or DVD+RW media if you need to add data (the media needsto be supported by your drive).

Additionally, please be aware that there are limited environments that can read data that has been added to either DVD-R or DVD+Rmedia, which already have more than 4GB of data written to them.

• Using Windows2000

Please be aware that if you are using a version of Windows2000 that has not had Service Pack 2 or later applied, then limitations to thereader driver mean that in general, you will not be able to read added data. These conditions mean that problems may also occur withDVD-R media that already have more than 2GB of data written, or with DVD+R media that has been written 2 or more times.

When using Windows2000, we recommend that you apply Service Pack 2 or later to your system.

Additionally, please be aware that there are limited environments that can read data that has been added to either DVD-R or DVD+RPage 34

Page 35: Drag'n Drop CD+DVD HELP · 2013. 9. 27. · Drag'n Drop CD+DVD HELP Next Drag'n Drop CD+DVD is designed to be the simplest software for making your own DISCs. You can create your

media, which already have more than 4GB of data written to them.

• Using WindowsNT4

If you have not applied the latest service pack to WindowsNT4, then problems similar to those detailed above with the Windows2000limitations will occur. Accordingly, we recommend that you apply the latest service pack to your system.

Additionally, please be aware that there are limited environments that can read data that has been added to either DVD-R or DVD+Rmedia, which already have more than 4GB of data written to them.

• Using WindowsXP

When using WindowsXP, it may not be possible to read additional data that is written to DVD-R or DVD+R media that already has morethan 4GB of data written. This is because of problems with the reader driver in the OS. Microsoft has announced a planned update toaddress this problem, to be released in either a service pack, or through Windows Update (Information confirmed as of November 2002)

* Information regarding additional writing to DVD is scheduled to appear on the Drag'n Drop CD+DVD web page. If you wish to have themost up-to-date information, we recommend that you select "Request Information by Mail" when carrying out user registration.Furthermore, in Drag'n Drop CD+DVD “Settings”, ensure that "Display Latest Information" is selected. How to record a WMABack Next

Whether to use digitized music files to make a music CD, or to make a data CD...A WMA is a compressed audio file. This file can only be played on a PC or special WMA players-- normal consumer audio playerscannot play this format. When recording WMA files using Music BOX, the Drag'n Drop CD+DVD automatically converts WMA files intothe normal audio CD format that home CD players can play. However, normal audio CDs are in an uncompressed format, one CD can only hold about 74 minutes (or 79 minutes depending on theblank size)of music. Recording WMA files as DATA files allows one CD to hold about 8 hours of music(depending on the compressionratio). If you intend to play WMA audio files on a PC, then you may want to record WMA files as data. If this is the case, use the DataBOX instead of the Music BOX.

Some audio CD player software automatically launches when an audio CD is inserted into the CD drive. Some data DISCsautomatically launch other applications when inserted into the CD drive. This is called autoplay. While it is useful most of time, sometimes it is a nuisance (especially during CD recording). To suppressed autoplay, pressing down the shift key on the keyboard forabout 10 seconds immediately after inserting a CD into the CD drive.

If the "Audio CD Layout Window" in the Music BOX is open, Music CD autoplay is suppressed automatically. This feature makesswapping the source CDs easier. Cannot play Audio CDsBack Next

We recommend you use CD-R disks when making audio CDs. While CD-RW discs are very useful since they are re-writable,sometimes audio CD players cannot handle the low reflectivity of the CD-RW surface. Consumer audio CD players are often designed tohandle pressed CDs or CD-Rs. If you are not sure about your player's capability, it is always a good idea to use CD-R discs.

If you still cannot play it back on your CD player, trying another brand of CD-R discs sometimes this cures the problem.

Another potential problem preventing playback may by that you have recorded WMA or WAV files on the CD using the Data BOX. Tocheck the properties of the CD that has been created, place the CD into the CD drive, and double click "My Computer". If the CD is notan audio CD, it may have been written as a data CD. CDs that are created in this way are regarded as data CDs and can not be playedon audio CD players.

MediaThis term refers to CD-R and CD-RW blank discs.

Mixed-ModeA CD that contains tracks of differing formats. Most often this term refers to discs that contain both computer data (Yellow Book) andaudio (Red Book) tracks. The data is on the first track and the audio is on the following tracks.

MP3A format for storing CD quality audio. This format is a heavily compressed audio signal with a 10:1 ratio of compression, while retainingits CD quality.

mp3 PROThis is more advanced than existing MP3, and as well as achieving similar music quality at half the bitrate, is compatible with existingMP3. MP3PRO is also supported by Drag'n Drop CD+DVD MP3 edition.

MultiReadThis is a standard used for CD-ROM drives which indicates the ability to read commercial CD's, CD-R discs, and CD-RW discs.

About File SystemBack Next

This section describes file systems for CDs.

1. ISO9660ISO9660 is the file system for CDs that is most widely used and has the best compatibility across platforms. For example, if you wishto create a disc that will be used for DOS, MAC, or UNIX, using ISO 9660 is good idea. However, there are limitations to file and foldernames that can be used with ISO9660.ISO9660 file and folder names can only be up to 8 characters and can only use capital letters or an underscore "_". File name extension is also limited up to 3 letters, using capital letters and the underscore "_". Folder hierarchies can consist of up to 8 levels.

2. JOLIET Joliet file and folder names can use up to 64 upper- or lower-case characters including spaces. Some characters are not allowed to beused in Joliet file or folder names:

* / : ; ? \ " < > |

* Asterisk / Forward slash : Colon ; Semi-colon ? Question mark \ Back slash " Quotation mark < Less-than sign > Greater-than sign | Vertical line You are now able to use commas "," from Drag'n Drop CD+DVD Version 3 onwards. This is as a result of strict adherence to the Jolietspecifications, which have classified the comma as a permitted character. However, please be aware that in certain OSes, usingcommas in filenames can lead to errors in operation, therefore we advise caution.

Please be aware that using text for a language other than that which is the Windows default language on the computer with Drag'n DropCD+DVD installed may lead to incorrect writing of the DISC.
