M arch 2012
President’s Report
As I set the clocks
ahead an hour
today, I realized
with a bit of a
shock that spring
is just around that corner and we`re
heading into longer days and warmer
weather. We`re also headed into the
last few months before we wind down
our activities for the year. We still
have a number of great Chapter
events before then, as you’ll read
about later, including our 60th
Anniversary celebration on May 31st
and Finance Minister Kevin Falcon on
June 7. There are also two major
events from our National office being
held before the end of June; the 2012
Private Equity Symposium and the
Annual Conference.
The
2012
Private
Equity
Symposium will be held on Tuesday,
April 12, 2012 in Toronto, with live
broadcasts in Vancouver, Calgary,
Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal and
Halifax. The event is a collaborative
effort between FEI Canada, the
Canadian Institute of Chartered
Business Valuators, the Toronto CFA
Society and Canada’s Venture Capital
& Private Equity Association. This
year’s theme is “Opportunities &
Challenges in Turbulent Times” and
includes three panel sessions followed
by a keynote address by David M.
Rubenstien, Co-Founder and
Managing Director, The Carlyle
Group. Panel sessions will address
the following topics:
Where and how are Leading
Canadian Pension Plans investing
in Private Equity?;
What's in Store for the Canadian
Private Equity Industry - Trends,
Challenges and Opportunities; and
The Rise of the Activist Investor.
Panelists for the sessions include
members of Ontario Teachers’
Pension Plan, OMERS, CPP
Investment Board, Brookfield Asset
Management, Canadian Tire and
others. (next page)

The culmi-nating event for the year will be the 2012 FEI Canada Na-tional Con-ference,
“Rock Solid Success”, being held in St. John’s, Newfoundland from June 6 – 8, 2012. With a wide variety of engaging and exhilarating speakers, the St. John’s Con-ference was designed to offer valuable education & networking opportunities for everyone, set in the small town warmth and charm of the oldest city in Canada. Notable keynote speakers include: Chief Phil Fontaine, CEO, Inhkonigan
Consulting and former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations;
General Rick Hillier, former Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces;
Tom Jenkins, Executive Chairman & Chief Strategy Officer, Opentext;
Robert P. Kelly, former Chairman & CEO, BNY Mellon and currently Chan-cellor, St. Mary's University; and
Mandy Shapansky, CEO of Xerox Canada.
The Conference qualifies for up to 12 CPD credits to fulfill your annual professional development training requirements. In addition to outstanding educational con-tent, the conference will also offers: Golfing at the beautiful Clovelly golf
course, The Osprey; A gala event that will allow you to dis-
cover the best of St. John’s with a warm welcome second to none; and
And a multitude of other recreational & networking events, with ‘down home hospitality’ and breathtaking scenery.
Conference registration is now open and more information is available on FEI Cana-da`s website http://www.feicanada.org/page/events/conference-2012, including a downloadable colour brochure. I`m hoping to make it out to St. John`s this year, and look forward to seeing you there.

Vancouver in 1952 As FEI Canada Vancouver Chapter pre-pares to celebrate its 60
th anniversary, it
seems appropriate to look back to life in Vancouver in the early 1950’s. The CGAs, had just been incorporated
in BC (1951) joining the CAs (1905) and the CMAs—RIAs in those days—(1945).
Lots in British Properties sold for be-
tween $2,000 and $5,000. We had a new Queen and a new
Premier—WAC “Wacky” Bennett. Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars
played at the Exhibition Garden. BC’s population was 1,165,200 accord-
ing to the 1951 census. By 2011, it had grown to 4,573,321.
In 1954, the BC Lions were admitted to
the Western Interprovincial Football Union, which soon became the West-ern Division of the Canadian Football League. The Vancouver Canucks had been around since 1945 (in the Pacific Coast Hockey League), and didn’t join the National Hockey League until it ex-panded in 1970.
Canadian forces were fighting in
Korea. Alcan built the Kenney Dam on the
Nechako River to provide hydro power to its smelter in Kitimat.
The “Drunkometer” was demonstrated
at the Hotel Vancouver. Park Royal Shopping Centre was Can-
ada’s first mall. It opened in 1950. Trans Mountain was incorporated in
1951 to build a pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby.
I was 10 years old and still living in
England. Information courtesy of The Chuck Davis History of Metropolitan Vancouver and various websites. If you have any memories to share, please contact me, Hugh Lindsay 604-732-0366, [email protected]

On February 22nd, FEI Canada was pleased to present “Credit Availability Ba-rometer” by our national sponsor, Ernst and Young. As part of the National Break-fast Seminar series, the results of an an-nual survey of financial executives were presented with a focus on the European Debt Crisis’ effect on Canadian markets, how the perspectives of lenders has changed and what has been learnt about risk and market volatility. Our National President, Michael Conway, was in at-tendance as Master of Ceremonies.

Shortly following on February 28th, the Vancouver Chapter was pleased to
host one of our own members and Past-President, Lisa Dorian. Lisa is President of PowellDorian Services Inc. and Vice President of MDA Training North Ameri-ca. Speaking on risk, Lisa also spoke about the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks 2011 Sixth Edition. Interestingly, Lisa spoke about how risks are inter-connected. Lisa also spoke at length about how decision makers often focus on the most recent risk event and how that is not really risk management. As one mem-ber said “This seminar spoke to the risks that I had to consider and report to the Board on a regular basis.” For those inter-ested in further reading:

Finally, on March 8th, we were again honored to listen to one of our own members, even if he is an immigrant from the Toronto Chap-ter. Tom Gunn is one of the founders of the CFO of t he Year award and was there-fore uniquely qualified to talk about what makes a great CFO and the downsides with playing in the “NHL of Finan-cial Executives”. Tom’s main conclusions, which he spoke to extensively, included:

The great CFOs are also great general managers. Great CFOs are great tightrope walkers. Promotable CFOs have more than financial skills. Nothing is worse than great ideas carried to extremes.
