Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by

which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful

to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder

engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student

    learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and

challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school

perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it

provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

    Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include

demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated

with the community/communities the school serves? Escambia County High School is located within the city limits of Atmore, Alabama. We are part of the Escambia County Public School

System, and are classified as a 5A, Title I school. Our current enrollment for the 2014-15 school year stands at 515 students. Of that

number, 47 students (9%) are American Indian, 382 students (74%) are Black, 78 students (15%) are White, 3 students (.5%) are Hispanic, 3

students (.5%) are Asian, and 2 students (.3%) classified themselves as Multi-Racial. 83% of the students at ECHS are on Free or Reduced

Lunch, qualifying us for Title I funds. ECHS is proud to hold the title of the first public high school in the state of Alabama.

There are five public schools located in Atmore, all part of the Escambia County School District. Rachel Patterson Elementary, Huxford

Elementary, AC Moore Elementary, and Escambia County Middle School all feed in to Escambia County High School.

Atmore is a small city (population 10,147 (2011-US Census Bureau) surrounded by a large area of rural communities with their own

identities. Atmore is a city in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The city has a culture similar to its neighboring metropolitan of

Mobile, Alabama. Atmore is in the planning stages to increase its economic base with additions in its new Rivercane development along the

I-65 corridor. The federally recognized Poarch Band of Creek Indians is also headquartered in Atmore. The Holman Correctional Facility of

the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) is in unincorporated southwestern Escambia County, 9 miles (14 km) north of Atmore.

Holman has a male death row and the State of Alabama execution chamber. In addition Fountain Correctional Facility is about 7 miles (11

km) north of Atmore, in an unincorporated area. Atmore is governed by a mayor and members of a city council elected from five districts

    within the city.

Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement

Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for

improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Escambia County High School has seen its shares of ups and downs over the last three years, with improvement on the Graduation rate

between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. Though the numbers declined in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years, they were still

higher than they had been in the previous years. Attendance prospects are anticipated to improve in the upcoming year, as ECHS will

continue utilize the School Cast system to notify parents if a student is absent from or tardy to school. This, along with the use of the truancy

diversion program, is designed to discourage absenteeism. Additionally, the implementation of a school-wide discipline plan should improve

overall climate. A fully integrated technology initiative is also being planned over the next three years to improve all students learning

experience. With the new End of Course Assessments, ACT requirements, and the CCRS, ECHS looks ahead to the new year with high

hopes for the students to again make significant academic gains through 2017.

    Improvement Planning Process

    Improvement Planning Process

Describe the process used to engage a variety of stakeholders in the development of the institution's improvement plan. Include

information on how stakeholders were selected and informed of their roles, and how meetings were scheduled to accommodate

them. All teachers are involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the improvement plan for Escambia County High School. ECHS

also works to involve the students. ECHS has a Leadership Team who's members include teachers, students, and parents. These

individuals are chosen based on subject area taught (for teachers) and grade level (for students) to ensure equal and adequate

representation. Community involvement is very important to the success of ECHS, and every effort is made to involve community

stakeholders in all aspects of the school. Members of the community are selected for specific involvement with input from existing

stakeholders, and volunteers are always welcomed. Stakeholders receive mailings informing them of their role and the dates and times of

meetings. All who wish to be involved in any aspect of planning for the school are welcome to visit the school at any time that is convenient

for them, and in the evenings by appointment. ECHS makes every effort to schedule meetings at convenient times. Describe the representations from stakeholder groups that participated in the development of the improvement plan and their

responsibilities in this process. Teachers are chosen to participate on the Leadership Team based on content area taught to ensure all subject areas are adequately

represented. Students are chosen based on grade level for the same reason. Community members have the same representation as

parents and students, and their input is valued at the same level as school employees. They may attend all planning meetings, and may

request additional information at any time.

    Needs Assessment

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Infrastructure (fast and easy access to network, digital content).

Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to conclude that these are areas of strength and need. Based on the active wired and wireless digital network currently in use at Escambia County High School (Principal walk-through Checklist),

there is a need to build upon the current foundation to eventually expand the wireless capability in order to accommodate a 1:1 student-

laptop initiative over the next three years. There is a solid infrastructure available for the use of technology currently in use at ECHS.

Wireless access points are located throughout the school. Currently, each classroom is wired LAN capable, has an overhead projector

mounted on the ceiling or has an interactive SMART board, and has a wireless access point. ECHS plans to begin the 1:1 student-laptop

initiative in the 2014-15 school year.

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Inventory (fast and easy access to technology). Identify the data

sources and actual data results that led you to conclude that these are areas of strength and need. The top area of need surround the move to a 1:1 student to Chrome book initiative, which ECHS hopes to achieve by the 2015-16 school

year. A considerable amount of technology will need to be purchased in order to see this to fruition.

The current inventory of instructional technology at Escambia County High School is vast in its scope and use. Current inventory includes 2

iPad carts with 30 iPads in each, Three laptop carts with 30 laptops, three carts with 30 Chrome Books in each, two computer labs, 5 SMART

boards, 5 eInstruction interactive white boards, 40 MOBI's, 18 HoverCam document Cameras, 6 ELMO document cameras, 60 functional

projectors (either mounted in classrooms or available for checkout through media center), 40 teacher iPads, 40 teacher laptops, 2 sets of

"buzzer systems" (game show), and 3 sets of eInstruction "clickers".

The Alabama Technology Transform 2020 survey of ECHS teachers in September of 2014 showed a decrease in teachers feeling they have

sufficient digital devices and tools to effectively integrate technology into their teaching (Section C, question 6 - 53.57 'yes' (compared to

57.14% 'yes' in 2013) and 35.71% 'somewhat' (compared to 28.5% 'somewhat' in 2013).

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Student Learning (subject area processes and content; 21st C.

skills and dispositions to ensure school, career, and life success). Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to

conclude that these are areas of strength and need. Based on The Alabama Technology Transform 2020 surveys of ECHS teachers and administrators and EDUCATEAlabama PLP indicators

selected by teachers, teacher implementation of technology into the classroom for student learning is a top area of need for Escambia

County High School. Teachers have access to technology, but generally lack the knowledge base to properly implement into instruction.

Training is needed not only in teacher use, but showing teachers how to let students use it.

-EDUCATE Alabama indicators assigned to PLPs for the 2013-14 school year show 9 teachers (26%), (compared to 7 (19%) in 2012-13)

who have assigned either indicator 3.7 or 3.8, which both deal with implementation of technology in instruction. Next to indicator 2.6, these

are selected more than any other indicator.

-The Alabama Technology 2020 surveys distributed indicate that 50% of teachers are unable to attend a sufficient number of professional

learning sessions to help integrate technology and digital resources into their classrooms (though down from 54% in 2013-this is still high).

This, along with the 71.43% of teachers who said they were interested in learning more about planning and using project-based/authentic

learning activities, this data shows a strong need for professional development for teachers in the use of technology in the classrooms. Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Professional Learning Program (Teachers, Staff, Leaders,

Community). Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to conclude that these are areas of strength and need. Escambia County High School works to offer teachers a variety of opportunities to be involved in the development and implementation of the

school's technology plan. Meetings are held at different times throughout the calendar year. There is a need for more intensive training on

this plan, however, as shown by Alabama Technology Transform 2020 surveys.

-According to the Alabama Transform 2020 survey of ECHS teachers, 49% of teachers stated they were somewhat or not familiar at all with

the school's and district's technology plan.

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Teacher Use—Teaching (how teachers use technology to teach

as well as require students to use technology to learn). Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to conclude

that these are areas of strength and need. The teachers of Escambia County High School have a variety of technological resources available to them to aid in communication with

students and parents. But a need for teachers to learn about and utilize their vast digital resources to communicate with students, parents,

    and others is evident.

-The Alabama Technology Transform 2020 survey of ECHS teachers showed that 37% of teachers never or rarely communicate relevant

information and ideas to students, parents, and others using a variety of digital tools (website, learning management system, collaboration

software, blogs, etc.). 31% reported 'occasional' use, totaling almost 70% of the staff.

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology Teacher Use—Productivity (how teachers use technology for

increased productivity). Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to conclude that these are areas of strength

and need. Teacher needs lie in access to online digital resources. According to the Alabama Technology Transform 2020 survey, only 41% of teachers

felt they had sufficient access to resources that were aligned to the course of study or common core standards. Increased access and

training in the use of these resources would increase teacher productivity. In the area of productivity, teachers at Escambia County High

School have extensive access to technology for productivity. According to Alabama Technology Transform 2020 survey of ECHS teachers,

each teacher has a desktop computer or a laptop computer, sometimes both. Data supports that all teachers have an e-mail account

designated through the school district. All computers, iPads or laptops have full network access. Survey data shows that all teachers

additionally have access to the school network from home.

Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with your technology School Leaders Use—Productivity (how administrators use

technology for increased productivity). Identify the data sources and actual data results that led you to conclude that these are

areas of strength and need. The administration at Escambia County High School has extensive access to technology for productivity. Needs in the area of administration

lie in assistance with professional development for teachers, in both an advisory and financial capacity.

Each administrator has a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, and PPT device to ensure full accessibility to and by staff and students. According

to Alabama Transform 2020 surveys, the administration uses internet, e-mail, and our network daily. Identify the top 1-3 areas of need associated with other technology program areas. Identify the data sources and actual data results

that led you to conclude that these are areas of strength and need. n/a

    Professional Learning

Based upon the strengths and areas of need listed above, what are your Professional Learning Topics for the upcoming year that

involves using technology to improve learner and productivity and prepares students for living and working in a digital world. Knowledge in the use of and implementation in instruction of existing technological resources available to teachers will be the primary focus

of the technological portion of the Professional Learning Plan for Escambia County High School. This is the first step toward increasing the

use of technology in instruction. Teachers who are already familiar with the available resources will be afforded the opportunity to enhance

their skills and gain additional strategies for implementation. Face-to-Face onsite training throughout the school year will be offered to all

teachers in a variety of areas, both after school (in the afternoons) and in the summer months. These trainings will be provided by both

school officials and by external trainers from various companies. ECHS will also seek out any offsite training opportunities available. We

hope to afford all teachers a minimum of 10 hours in PD for the purpose of technology use instruction.
