Quick History

Basketball is one of the world’s most popular

sports ranking just behind soccer with an

estimated 450 million professional, amateur,

and “just for fun” participants worldwide. In

the United States, an estimated 41 million kids

play basketball in organized and competitive

leagues each year.

Dr. James Naismith, a one-time Physical

Education teacher is credited for inventing the

game which gave his rowdy gym class a fun

competitive game to play indoors during

the winter months.

The first ball used in the game was

actually a soccer ball which would be

shot into peach baskets.

Nevada high school basketball is

governed by the NIAA (Nevada

Interscholastic Activities

Association) and the NFHS (the

National Federation of State

High School Associations).

The 2011-2012 NFHS

Basketball Rules Book is

posted online and

contains definitions,

rules, and

fundamentals of

the game. 12

Controls the game and gets team the offense going. The

point guard works the closest with the coach, calls plays

and lets everybody knows what's going on. Point guards

have a great IQ of the game, they are usually the best ball

handler, normally the shortest player on the team, have a

solid body type and are very athletic. The point guard

keeps teammates involved reading openings and

distributing the ball.

(2-guard) Typically the primary scorer of the team on

offense, efficient at the rim, tremendous athletic ability,

high basketball IQ. and good defensive player. The

shooting guard is typically taller than the point guard, but

height and body type are different for every player. The

shooting guard is usually the team's best perimeter

shooter who can spot up shoot or drive to the basket and

also tries to grab rebounds on offense.

(3-guard) The all-purpose player on offense: aggressive

and strong; tall enough to mix it up inside but agile

enough to handle the ball and shoot well. Must be able to

score both from the perimeter and from inside. The small

forward is solidly built and brings enthusiasm with dunks

and athletic offensive play.

Has muscles or at least a little bulk. Must be able to

catch passes and hit shots near the basket. A good,

rugged rebounder, but athletic enough to move with some

quickness around the lane on offense and defense.

Expected to score when given the opportunity on the

baseline, much like a center, but usually has a range of up

to 15 feet all around the basket.

Usually the tallest player on the team. Posts up to

receive the ball backed to the basket and pivots to hit

short jumpers, hook shots, and dunks. The center finds the

open player in the paint and grabs offensive rebounds.

Defensively the center blocks shots and makes it hard for

the opponent to attack the basket.
