SUBJECT: PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF CORE SAMPLES FROM USWG1 ANDUSWG2

Each as-recieved sample which was long enough, was cut into threepieces for the requested tests. Four samples from USWG2, atdepths of 324.8 feet, 488.9 feet, 589.6 feet, and 1069.0 feet,wete large enough for only two pieces to be cut from each.Please see Figure 1, the testing sequence.

Bulk property tests consisted of natural state bulk density,moisture content, helium porosity, and grain density tests. Drybulk density was calculated from moisture content and naturalstate bulk density; porosity was calculated from grain densityand dry bulk density. Test results and calibration data arereported in Table 1. Sources of testing procedures are listed inTable 4.

A sample from each depth was cut to fit the Ruska Porometer,tested for bulk volume and helium porosity, and then oven-driedfor the mercury injection test. Injected volumes, temperatures,and times at the requested pressures are reported in the tablesentitled "Pore Size Distribution Data". Accuracy of the measuredpressures is reported in Table 2.

Samples for helium gas permeability tests were potted in opticalpitch and tested in the natural state in accordance with APIRP27, "Recommended Practice for Determining Permeability ofPorous Media'. Each sample was then removed from the pitch,oven-dried, and retested. Test results are reported on theattached computer printouts; calibration dates for the gauges andthe caliper used for length and diameter measurements are inTable 3.
