NOVUS IRELAND
Executive Summary The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) NOVUS has been created to look after the interests of new and existing members entering the built environment, particularly those looking to progress their membership status. We believe in the strength of our team to help identify tomorrow’s leaders and participate in the future of the construction industry by providing a network, support and voice for members and aspiring members. NOVUS provides opportunities for aspiring, new and existing members to develop and become an integral part of CIOB.
This document has been specifically written for the activities of the Ireland Branch, although its operations remain consistent through the alignment of those of UK NOVUS Branches. This document is specifically intended for existing members and non‐members seeking to achieve membership status and wishing to be involved in NOVUS’s activities, construction employers who wish to invest in their employees by supporting NOVUS, educational organisations offering construction‐related courses, and other organisations wishing to collaborate with NOVUS. Chapter One details the aim and objectives of NOVUS together with an introduction of the proposed Novus Ireland Team committee members, detailing their experiences within the Construction Industry. The following chapter reviews the Team’s approach to recruiting aspiring members, engaging with existing members and interacting with construction and educational organisations. Collaboration with educational organisations, professional bodies, construction companies and local training bodies are particularly focused on within this section. Chapter Three explains how the Project and Team activities will be funded. This part of the document also concentrates on describing how events will be financed together with identifying areas of opportunity to secure sponsorship and co‐host events. Personal and professional opportunities are detailed in Chapter Four. Continuous Professional Development (CPD), social & networking events, Mentoring and the use of a Linked‐In Forum are discussed within this chapter. Chapters Five and Six comprise a schedule of proposed events and contact details.

1.0 Introduction NOVUS (formerly Gateway) was founded in Autumn 2008 by Luke Smith of Davis Langdon in collaboration with CIOB London and Hampshire. Luke recognised the need to create a vehicle that drove and supported aspiring construction professionals to achieve chartered membership status with the Chartered Institute of Building. He felt that trainees, students and graduates alike did not necessarily receive the most beneficial support through the undertaking of the Professional Development Programme (PDP) either within their organisation or during academic studies. It was identified that this was largely due to a lack of cohesion between the CIOB, construction companies and educational organisations at a local level. It was also acknowledged by the Team that although the CIOB PDP assessors provided adequate guidance to Incorporate members, more could be done to support these ambitious individuals and potential leaders of the future.
The vision for Gateway was to create a group that provided a fun, exciting, and professional network for individuals seeking to progress their career within the Construction Industry. The group would offer social, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and inter‐professional opportunities to a network of construction professionals in a fun, welcoming and harmonious environment.
Following the success of the initial UK Novus Branches, the CIOB launched an initiative to create more Novus Branches throughout the UK and in Ireland. A CIOB Novus Committee Joint Meeting was held in London in April 2010 to promote the establishment of Novus Groups throughout the CIOB Branches in the UK and Ireland.
CIOB in Ireland is fully supportive of the Novus initiative and is very keen to provide a networking platform for its younger members.
This document details how NOVUS intend to achieve its long‐term vision for a strong network of professionals whom individually and collectively greatly contribute to the CIOB and the construction industry as a whole.

1.1 Aim
The aim of NOVUS Ireland is to increase the number of CIOB members within the region whilst providing a network to assist and support construction professionals, students and Incorporate members achieve Chartered Status.
1.2 Objectives
NOVUS Ireland has set the following objectives to achieve the aim:
I. Liaise with construction companies and educational organisations to recruit new members.
II. Liaise with construction companies, local and regional press, construction media, local training bodies and educational organisations to raise NOVUS and CIOB Ireland’s profiles.
III. Provide support and encouragement to NOVUS Members enabling them to progress to Chartered status.
IV. Provide a network of construction professionals that share experiences and knowledge.
V. Offer CDP event opportunities to provide members with the necessary training and skill set.
VI. Offer inter‐professional events to support and broaden member knowledge and provide networking opportunities.
VII. Arrange social events to encourage members to share their concerns and views or raise questions that they might not communicate in other forums.
VIII. Be a vehicle for individuals wanting to engage and support the main CIOB network.
1.3 The Team
NOVUS Ireland comprises a committee of professionals with a mix of skills and experiences. The Team represent a wide range of construction disciplines including main contracting, project management and quantity surveying consultancy.

CHAIRMAN
Michael Gallagher BSc (Hons) MCIOB, KMCS
Michael started his career by studying Construction Management in Limerick Institute of Technology and spent a year in industry placement with the firm Purcell Construction. While studying at LIT, he joined the CIOB as a student member. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree and joined KMCS (Keogh McConnell Spence) as an Assistant Project Manager in 2005. During his time with KMCS he achieved corporate membership status with the CIOB. He is a key member of the KMCS project management team and has progressed to the role of project manager. He has managed a number of fit out and residential projects and in recent years, has built up a strong expertise in the project management of healthcare projects for both public and private clients. Michael is currently acting as an Employer Representative on behalf of the Health Service Executive (HSE) for a national framework providing residential healthcare units using a Design and Build procurement approach. He has continued to progress his career by joining the Irish Project Management Institute and aims to become IPMA Certified in the near future. He also aims to commence a Masters in Project Management in 2011.
VICE CHAIRMAN
Tommy Buckley BSc MSc ICIOB
Tommy has worked in several sectors of the Construction Industry. He has worked for two civil engineering contracting companies and also a number of small general contractors in roles which include site engineer, site agent and project manager. He has also worked on the client side of the industry as an assistant project manager for both public and private clients. He has gained experience in a number of procurement systems including Design and Build and Construction Management. He started his career with BAM. He completed a masters in Construction and Project Management from The University of Ulster in 2007, after which he went on to work on the client side of the business with Rogerson Reddan in their Project Management team. Since the down turn in 2008 he has completed a number of short term contracts with contractors in their site management teams. He continues to pursue work opportunities. He joined CIOB in 2008 and is currently ICIOB and hopes to progress his membership level in the near future. He strives to always improve his professional and personal experience and is currently completing an MSc in Quantity Surveying on a part time basis in DIT.

TREASURER
Claire Crowley B.Tech.Con.Tech, BSc (Hons) M.S.C.S, M.R.I.C.S, I.C.I.O.B KMCS
Claire started her career by studying a Construction Technology Degree in Dublin Institute of Technology and continued to study a Construction Economics & Management Degree on a part time basis while working as a Quantity Surveyor for KMCS (Keogh McConnell Spence). While studying at DIT, Claire served a number of years as Class Representative and Equality Officer for DIT. Claire graduated with a First Class Honours Degree and subsequently gained Chartered status with the SCS and RICS in 2009. Claire is a Senior Quantity Surveyor at KMCS and is responsible for the Overall Cost Management and Control of a variety of projects in the Residential, Retail, Commercial and Healthcare sectors. Claire has built up an extensive portfolio in Healthcare projects and has gained specific expertise and knowledge of EU Procurement and GCCC Contract Forms. Claire is aiming to commence a Masters Study Programme at the end of 2010.

Garreth Maybury BSc (Hons) HND Eng MEI ICIOB
Garreth started his career by studying Civil Engineering in Stockport College in England where he received a Higher National Diploma. He then took a year out from his studies and took a junior engineering role with Jons Civil Engineering. Garreth then attended University of Ulster, Jordanstown, where he studied Construction & Engineering Management and received an honours degree. Garreth is currently a project manager with Bam Building and his career so far has seen him work in Pharmaceutical, Healthcare, Commercial, Residential and Educational construction projects. He joined CIOB in 2010 and is currently ICIOB and hopes to progress his membership level in the near future. His interests include golf, football, rugby and fitness training. He is looking forward to his role as Events Chair and hopes to use his interests and the interests of all other interested members in his new role.

EDUCATION REPRESENTATIVE Gabriel Morrin Gabriel is an Estimator / Surveyor with over 25 years experience working in the construction industry in general contracting and professional areas. He obtained membership of the CIOB through a training partnership whilst employed with PJ Hegarty & Sons.

2.0 Strategy Raising awareness and effective publicity is vital to the success of NOVUS. The team aim to provide a support framework for young trainees, newly‐qualified construction professionals and existing Incorporate CIOB members. This section of the document explains how we will capture aspiring construction professionals and interaction with four key groups of organisations. The model below illustrates the key target areas of NOVUS, which will be pinnacle to the success of the group in achieving its ultimate goal.
2.1 Educational Organisations
Headed up by Gabriel Morrin the Team will engage with local educational organisations offering construction‐related degrees. Colleges and Universities within the region identified by Novus are as follows:

As part of the engagement with local education establishments NOVUS will give presentations, allowing students to gain a better understanding of different roles within the construction industry and to put a face to the CIOB. Students will be encouraged to enrol as members of the CIOB (student class) and attend future group events. The colleges and universities shall correspond with X X in respect of potential and future events, matters pertaining to the CIOB and mentoring. CIOB events and literature will be displayed within the built environment faculty of each college and university.
2.2 Construction Companies
Under the management of X X the Team will co‐ordinate with Human Resource representatives and directors of construction companies. Our strategy entails targeting both contracting and consultancy organisations to recruit into the group their keen and ambitious employees. Regular contact will be made, informing the companies of upcoming events. Presentations will be given to construction employees informing them of NOVUS, the CIOB, and the benefits of membership. Mentoring and support will be offered to employees keen to join the CIOB.
2.3 Professional Organisations
X X is responsible for coordinating NOVUS with other professional bodies such as the below, non‐exhaustive list. He will facilitate networking opportunities with like‐minded professionals from all disciplines within the industry and coordinate activities with suitable professional bodies.
The Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS) Association for Project Management (APM) Engineers Ireland (EI) Royal Institute of Architects Ireland (RIAI)
This inter‐professional liaison will expand the range of CPD offered to NOVUS members and will attract new professionals to the CIOB. In addition, it will provide a network of construction professionals to share experiences and knowledge thus broadening members’ knowledge.
2.4 Local Training Bodies
Driven by X X the team will liaise and coordinate with training bodies such CIF, FAS, CITB ETC and local training providers. Coordinating with these training bodies will allow us to reach construction apprentices, managers and industry professionals, all of whom may be potential NOVUS recruits. X X will organise talks and events with LTB’s to give opportunity for us to promote the CIOB. In addition, the LTB’s may be willing to run seminars for members or provide suitable venues for CPD events.

3.0 Financing Funds to support events organised and hosted by NOVUS Ireland will be acquired in several ways. The financial model below illustrates and articulates how the Team plan to raise funds to maximise opportunities offered to CIOB members, construction professionals, companies, educational establishments and local training bodies. X X will control the financial activities of the group.
3.1 CIOB Capital
Each year we will present a business case to the CIOB Ireland Branch Committee setting out its plans for the forthcoming year together with projected costs. This will allow the branch to consider proposals and allocate the projected funds, as they deem necessary.

3.2 Sponsorship
To supplement the investment made by the Eastern Centre, funding will be obtained from construction organisations wishing to sponsor an event. In return the sponsor will receive invitations to the event, network with NOVUS members as well as the opportunity to promote their organisation. It is envisaged that most events will need sponsorship, and therefore all negotiations shall be handled ethically and diligently by the Treasurer – Claire Crowley. Under no circumstances will NOVUS or the CIOB profit from any event. In all instances surplus funds will be returned to the sponsor or donated to charity.
3.3 Attendance Fees
For social networking events a contributory fee will be charged. Fees will be calculated once CIOB funding and sponsorship have been deducted. NOVUS will endeavour to ensure CPD events are provided to members free. We will endeavour to ensure that the CPD events are relevant to members needs and will gather feedback from members to best address their training and development needs and areas of interest.
3.4 Joint‐Venture Events
The NOVUS format is ideal for running events alongside other similar groups affiliated to other professional organisations, and for encouraging networking and relationship building between different disciplines. Many professions and groups will rarely encounter each other during normal construction activities due to the layered nature of the industry. Joint‐venture events present an excellent opportunity for professionals working for clients, consultants, client’s agents, contractors and sub‐contractors to meet and exchange ideas and opinions on the future of the industry. The other benefit of these events is that the funding can be split between the participating bodies.

4.0 Personal and Professional Opportunities Garreth Maybury, the Events Chair is responsible for coordinating events and mentoring. Assisted by the Novus Team, Garreth Maybury will ensure an events programme (see section 6.0) comprising CPD, Networking and Social events is put together each year.
Working closely with Garreth Maybury are Priscila Giuriato and Bronagh McCotter, Ireland Centre Administrators, who are responsible for promoting events, media coverage (journals, website(s) etc.) and moderating the group forum on linked‐In (see section 4.4).
4.1 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Events
In line with Rule 13 of the CIOB Rules of Professional Competence and Conduct, NOVUS will provide Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities. It is important for professionals to regularly assess their current and future skill and knowledge requirements. These should be relevant to their responsibilities and therefore planning and implementing an ongoing programme of training and development is important. The advantages of CPD are plenty:

Reflect on personal achievements and invest in future development
Learn from others and exchange knowledge and ideas
Benchmark performance
Demonstrate to colleagues and clients that they are a self‐starter and motivated to learn
Develop the skills required to do a job more effectively
Learn in a flexible style, identifying the most of available development opportunities
We plan on providing conferences, lectures, seminars and training courses to members. See Section 6.0 for a list of 2010 / 2011 scheduled events.

4.2 Social & Networking Events
NOVUS networking events are an excellent opportunity to make new contacts, and socialising with friends and colleagues, in an enjoyable environment. These events are a chance for members and non‐members to become more involved with their regional centre. They are the ideal opportunity for attendees to get to know other members and CIOB representatives from their region in an informal setting. NOVUS will also team up with other professional bodies, giving greater opportunity for attendees to expand their network. The types of event we intend to provide include:

4.3 Mentoring
To help students and Novus members of the CIOB obtain Member status the Team will offer a mentoring service in which consultation will be given. The intention is to primarily assist aspiring professionals to achieve Member status within the CIOB. In addition this service may extend to assisting student members with coursework and Dissertations / Thesis research.
4.4 Forum
Members of NOVUS will be invited to join the new group network www.linked‐in.com, a forum provided for professionals of all industry. The group forum will link members to other Novus members from the London, Hampshire and other UK branches. Although currently in its development stages, it is envisaged this medium will provide opportunity for members to enter discussion topics, advertise Novus and CIOB events and advertise career opportunities.
The next revision of Scope Document is to comment on The Construction Network (TCN).

7.0 Mission Statement
“CIOB NOVUS aim to process and prioritise the vast amount of information available from within the CIOB, and deliver it to aspiring construction professionals, whom are attempting to reach Chartership. The committee will also endeavour to provide a much needed ‘face’ for the CIOB, by providing a networking forum, which promotes knowledge sharing, interaction and integration into the CIOB”
