WELCOME!As a kid growing up, my late-night television was dominated by B-movie versions of vampire and zombie movies, peppered with Monty Python and TV sketch comedy shows. So it is no surprise that Dracula: The Bloody Truth tickled both my love of horror and my funny bone.

We can be filled with glee to see spins on our favourite stories. Dracula has found his way into a number of genres since Bram Stoker first laid out the story of the count in the late 1800s: he’s been suave, silly, sexy, spooky, vicious, and mysterious. He’s been onstage, on screen, and in our imaginations as the ultimate night-dwelling spectre. He’s even been spoofed in a children’s television series (ONE rubber ducky...ah, ah, ah!).

There’s also great fun to be had in spoofing the classics, and the monster genre is the best of all. Maybe this is based in our primal need to turn our greatest fear into something we can mock. Or maybe the supernatural outrageousness of the plots is just something that is ripe for parody.

Dracula lives in our imaginations like no other supernatural villain. There is no other being who inspires our fear, fascination, and obsession like the Count. There is much about the Dracula story that fires our imagination: the midnight bloodsucking, the charm, the mysterious voyages, the gothic castle in Transylvania.

I’ve often wondered why we have such fascination with the vampire fantasy, and Count Dracula in particular. Is it our ancient fear of the dark? The terror at the idea of being sapped of our life-giving blood? His mysteriously tongue-twisting accent?

The most successful parodies are those that can also take themselves seriously and stay close to the source material. The success of Dracula: The Bloody Truth lies in actually telling the story of Bram Stoker’s novel, albeit in an off-beat way. Tremendous entertainment, and some solid education to boot – isn’t that why we come to the theatre?

Enjoy, and don’t leave your garlic at home when you go out at night this Hallowe’en…

There are things in this life that we do out of obligation, and there are things that we do just for a laugh. This play counts as the latter. We hope you have half as much fun watching it as we had making it.

Thanks to Vertigo Theatre for producing this bit of wackiness in 2018, and to Western Canada Theatre for allowing us to revisit it. And remember, what you are about to witness tonight should in no way be described as theatre.

LE NAVET BETE has been based in Exeter, Devon, UK since 2008. Their mission is to create and tour hilarious, physical and totally accessible comedy theatre using creative and engaging storytelling for absolutely everyone.

There are five who make up the core team of the company: four performers (Dan Bianchi, Nick Bunt, Al Dunn and Matt Freeman) and their technical and production wizard (Alex Best). They first met whilst studying on the Theatre and Performance course at the University of Plymouth in 2003 and, since graduating, have produced twelve indoor and three outdoor shows.

Their first two shows, Serendipity and Zemblanity, heavily influenced by bouffon and non-narrative-based structures, were performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008 and 2009 respectively, to multiple five-star reviews. As they developed over the following years, their inimitable style of performance became much more storytelling / narrative-driven with hit shows such as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dick Tracy and Robin Hood and His Merry Men placing physical theatre, fooling and slapstick at the heart of it. Dracula: The Bloody Truth has been published and licensed worldwide. 2019 sees them take on Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. Making accessible work has been at the centre of their ethos right from the very beginning. This saw them diversify into outdoor performance in 2010, performing to hundreds of thousands from the circus fields at Glastonbury Festival and the beautiful gardens of the Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover, Germany, to the picturesque Plaza de Armas in Morelia, Mexico, and high up on the side of the Rock of Gibraltar.

As well as performing, they have a widely renowned education program – specialising in physical comedy, performer-audience relationships and play – that they have taught across the world, from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London to the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

PLAYWRIGHTS

Theatre NorthWest, Prince George, is a regional theatre dedicated to bringing its audience a wide range of plays drawn from the contemporary Canadian and International repertoire. PROGRAM NOTESDRACULA, NOVEL AND PLAY: IT ALL BEGAN AT THE THEATRE

Although Dracula is best remembered today as a literary masterpiece, the story, and its author share theatrical origin stories. Bram Stoker began his career as a theatre critic for The Dublin Evening Mail and, after moving to London, became the business manager for the Lyceum Theatre, a position he held from 1878 to 1898. By 1878, the Lyceum had established a long history of staging gothic melodramas: comical performances that combined music, merriment, mystery, and the macabre in thrilling ways. For example, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein received its first theatrical adaptation at the Lyceum in 1823, turning the novel into a gothic melodrama that saw Frankenstein’s Creature muted and painted blue.

Inspired by this theatrical tradition and elements of Eastern European folklore, Stoker composed what would soon become the quintessential modern vampire novel: Dracula. But before it became a literary sensation, Dracula was first introduced to theatre audiences as a gothic melodrama. Two weeks prior to the novel’s 1897 publication, Dracula was performed at Stoker’s Lyceum Theatre. Demonstrating a flair for the theatrical, and a desire to keep his story’s production rights, Stoker personally adapted his unpublished novel for the stage, which debuted on May 13th, 1897 as a performance entitled Dracula, or the Undead. Like Frankenstein before it, Dracula was presented as a gothic melodrama, emphasizing its humour, action, horror, and iconic characters.

Today, although it has been more than a century since that first performance and the novel’s publication, Dracula has enjoyed a long theatrical history, and the story has been adapted innumerable times since its 1897 debut.

In their script for Dracula: The Bloody Truth, Le Navet Bete and John Nicholson reconnect this canonical literary work to its theatrical origins and resurrect the spirit of gothic melodrama that first animated it. As an English theatre company specializing in physical comedy, La Navet Bete are especially skilled at highlighting the kinetic and comical elements of this famous story. Through their irreverent treatment of Dracula, they clear the cobwebs off these familiar plots and characters to reveal their persisting vitality, theatricality, and oft-unrealized humour.

Based on their performance text, this production offers a highly physical take on a literary classic that reanimates Stoker’s words through a dynamic combination of humour and haunting, the fresh and the familiar. In this take on the classic monster story, elements of farce, wordplay, and a massive cast of characters are brought together to create a distinctly modern Dracula that reflects the story’s persisting creative potential. By exploding traditional assumptions about this nineteenth-century novel, the artists who brought today’s performance to life have revealed Dracula’s inherent theatricality and shown us why the infamous Count continues to haunt the stage in the twenty-first century.

SNEAK A PEEKTHE SOUND OF MUSIC:SHOWCASING OUR REGION’S TALENTED YOUNG PEOPLE

ANNA HAHN

EVERLEIGH RIFE

CASSIUS FORD

IVAN VUTEV SEREN WILLIAMSMANDISA VOLO

One of our favourite parts of putting on the holiday shows is that we get to showcase the region’s amazing young talent! From the five young actors who touched our hearts in A Christmas Carol to the eleven young people who wowed us in the Children’s Chorus of Elf – The Musical, we’ve been so impressed by the abilities of our local children and youth.

The holiday show also gives us the welcome opportunity to identify emerging talent, such as Mandisa Volo, who played the central role of Michaela in Elf.

And again this year, our holiday show, The Sound of Music, has a stellar young cast, including Mandisa, who is back – a year older, but still just 13 years old – as Louisa. Also returning from Elf is Anna Hahn, 9 years old, who was in the Children’s Chorus. Anna, who loves dancing and singing, trains in tap, jazz, musical theatre, and ballet.

Cassius Ford, aged 10, is coming all the way from Williams Lake to draw on his years of musical and dance training to play Kurt. Another 10 year old with plenty of performance experience in choir, music and performance is Seren Williams, who will play Brigitta. Only 8 years old, Everleigh Rife has been taking dance classes for five years already. She also enjoys oratory performances and performing short plays.

You may have seen the elder of this youthful group, Ivan Vutev, playing the fiddle with his father and brother at the Kamloops Farmers Market; you may not know he plays both the violin and piano to Level 10 of the Royal Conservatory of Music, dances, sings in many choirs, and has acted in school plays, musicals and five (!) Pantos. In The Sound of Music, he will play Friedrich.

One thing that several of these performers have in common is experience in WCT’s Stage One Theatre School. We are so proud to have helped them grow as individuals and performers to a place where they can share the stage with professional actors and shine!
