Gladiolus germplasm

Among 30 gladiolus varieties tested at HRS, Anantharajupeta Punjab Dawn took minimum number of days for flowering(44 days) followed by Prisilia (47 days), whereas highest plant height was observed with Swarnima (115.4cm) followed by Bindiya (98.5 cm). Highest spike length was recorded in Ac. No. 7(140.2cm) fol-lowed by Swarnima (135.2cm) and Bindiya (134.8cm).Similarly maximum number of flowers was recorded in Arka Amar and Kumkum (15.33) followed by Kajol (14.66).

Stem borer in moringa

Dr. D. Srinivasa Reddy, Scientist (Entomology), Horticul-tural Research Station, Anantharajupeta observed severe stem borer (Batocera rufomaculata) incidence in different moringa varieties and maximum damage was observed in Bhagya variety (56.61%) followed by PKM-2 (52.92%) and PKM-1(44.48%). Gum oozing, chewed stem powder fallen near the base of the plant and death of newly emerged side shoots are some of the symptoms observed in moringa due to stem borer damage. Early and later instar grubs of stem borer were observed in the secondary and main branches of moringa.

Application of Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens fortified with FYM+ neem cake @10 kg/tree (one kg each of T.viride, P. fluorescens mixed with 90kg FYM and 10kg neem cake) was also recommended for the management of dry root.

Recommended to remove gummosis affected branches, scraping of gum ooze on the stem with sharp knife followed by application of Bordeaux paste and spraying of Carbendazim @ 1g/lt twice at 15 days interval to control gummo-sis. Application of Azatobacter and Phosphate Solubilising Bacteria @ 100 gm each along with 40 kg of FYM/tree was also suggested to reduce the inorganic fertilizer usage.
