Inducing maleness in teasel gourd

Teasel gourd (Momordica subangulata ssp. renigera), is a dioecious plant species which gives male and fe-male flowers on different plants. In an experiment at Horticultural Research Station, Venkataramanna-gudem female plants of teasel gourd were sprayed with different concentrations of Silver nitrate which has the ability to induce maleness in flowering plants. Silver nitrate at 400 ppm concentration induced the maleness and produced hermaphrodite flowers with viable pollen.

Germplasm evaluation

In a research trial on gladiolus germplasm at HRS, Anantharajupeta with

regard to corm characters maximum corm weight of 57.61 g was recorded in

AC.No.7 followed by Bindiya (57.61g), Yellow Star (53.80gr), Arka Amar

(49.24g), Masca Gani (46.72g), Amsterdam (46.50), and minimum corm

weight was noted in Arka Kesari(8.0g), and American Beauty (7.0g), similarly

maximum cormel weight of 2.23g was recorded in Swarnima followed by

Amsterdam (2.0g) and minimum in Urmi (0.7g each).

In a trial on “Evaluation of promising varieties of papaya” at HRS, Anan-

tharajupeta lowest plant height (258.42 cm) was recorded in TFCP-3 fol-

lowed by Red lady (260.24 cm). Number of days taken for flowering was

less (123.75days) in Red lady followed by TFCP-3 (126.00 days). The in-

cidence of PRSV was less in TFCP-2 (9.67%) followed by TFCP-4

(17.85%) and higher in Red Lady (41.23%). TFCP-2 and TFCP-4 are dio-

ecious types where as TFCP-3 and Red lady are gynodioecious types.

In another experiment for standardization of hot water technique for the management of post har-

vest losses due to fruit fly and anthracnose on three commercial varieties of mango viz., Beneshan,

Banglora and Neelam at HRS, Anantharajupeta, it was observed that zero percent damage of fruit

fly and 3– 9 % damage due to anthracnose was recorded at 480 C for 60 minutes without causing

any deleterious effects on fruit peel colour, texture, TSS and acidity up to 7 days in Neelam, 10 days

in Beneshan and 14 days in Bengaluru.
