Background

In2014therewere3239ConsultantRadiologistsintheUKcomprising7.8%oftheConsultantworkforce.(1) With247trainingposts,radiologyisthe7thlargestspecialisttrainingprogrammeandismorecompeIIvethananyofthelargerschemes.(2)It’sthereforevitalthatundergraduatesgainexposuretothespecialtyatanearlystageandunderstandtherewardsandchallengesofsuchacareer.TheRoyalCollegeofRadiologistspublished an Undergraduate Radiology Curriculum in 2012 as a framework for undergraduate teaching. (3) SomeUKmedical schools provideformalundergraduateradiologyplacementsandLeedsMedicalSchoolareintroducingsuchaplacementinOctober2016.ToestablishwhetherLeedswasanoutlierinsuchprovision,aqualitaIvestudywascarriedouttoascertainwhatmedicalschoolscurrentlyofferintheUK.

Discussion

Following the implementaIonof theModernisingMedicalCareersprogramme in2005, traineesneedtodecideontheir futurecareeratanearlier stage. (4) To inspire thenextgeneraIonofRadiologists, it is important that theygainexposure to the specialtyasanundergraduate.ThereisawidevariaIonofundergraduateprovisionintheUK,butrelaIvelyfewformalundergraduateplacements.FollowingseveralyearsofnegoIaIons,LeedsMedicalSchoolwillbeintroducinga3rdyearplacementinradiologyincludingaformalcurriculum.

In total,32medical schoolsand38 radiology trainingschemeswerecontacted,with response fromallbut two.Therewereonly sixcenterswhichdeliveredaformal,dedicatedplacementinradiologyforallstudents(seemapabove).Themedicalschoolsthatincorporatearadiologyplacement include a radiology specific curriculum and formal assessment. Many centers offer a placement for those interested with theequivalentofaspecialstudymodule.RadiologyisalsowidelytaughtwithinotherspecialtyplacementsandRadiologistsoaenteachwithintheMedicalSchoolinsubjectssuchasanatomy.
