The Samachar Darpan in Bengali. The first issue of this daily was published from the Serampore Mission Press on May 23, 1818.

In the same year, Ganga Kishore Bhattacharya started publishing another newspaper in Bengali, the Bengal Gazetti In 1818.

SAMBAD KAUMUDI , in Bengali in 1820.

Miratul-ul-Akhbar in Persian language;

On July 1, 1822 the first Gujarati newspaper the Bombay Samachar was published from Bombay, which is still extant.

The first Hindi newspaper, the Samachar Sudha Varshan began in 1854.

Malayala Manorama in Malayalam language from Kerala state in 1888.

The National Readership Study 2005 (NRS 2005) in India

The National Readership Study 2005 (NRS 2005) in India is the largest survey of its kind in the world, with a sample size of over 2,61,212 house-to-house interviews to track the media exposure and changing consumer trends in both urban and rural India - and of course the estimated readership of publications.

The study covers 522 publications (221 dailies and 301 magazines)

In 2005, the average urban

adult spent 42 minutes a day

reading dailies; Three years

earlier, the average reading

time was 32 minutes.

In rural India, it reading time

was 35 minutes in 2005 but in

2002, the average reading time

was 32 minutes.

An addition of 21 million readers to

the print media between 2002 and

2005.

Of the 200 million readers, as many

as 98 million are from rural India

and 101 million from urban India.

314 million people who could read

and understand one or another

language but who did not read any

publication.

Dainik Jagran, is a world's Largest Hindi Portal and it is the 17th most widely read newspaper in the world. It was the brainchild of the freedom fighter Mr. Puranchandra Gupta. The first edition was launched in Jhansi in 1942 and in 1947 Dainik Jagran shifted its headquarters to Kanpur where it launched its second edition on 21 September, 1947.Dainik Jagran is India's largest circulated Hindi daily, with 21.24 Million Readers according to National Readership Survey. It is the first Indian publication to cross the 20 million mark.
