EASWARI ENGINEERING COLLEGE
Workshop on “SPARK- Fun with Engineering” ( 1/03/2014 & 15/03/2014)
Seniors students experience with robotics were the resource persons. They were from
two different departments and have won many robotic competitions as a team. They first gave us
an introduction, covering the fundamentals of every component followed by a detailed
explanation on how to handle the various testing equipments. We then had a soldering practice
session where we were taught on the importance of doing it right. After a short lunch break we
gathered again at the lab waiting eagerly to grow our knowledge. In the afternoon session, the
most anticipated part of the workshop arrived and each of us got the opportunity to build our
very own “Sunflower Robots”.
The second session started with exuberance as we displayed our working robots with a
sense of accomplishment. An insight into the various mechanical concepts that are required to
build a successful robot without any structural failures was given. A brief introduction to the
various types of motors where terms like traction, speed and torque was explained. We were also
IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 11 No. 1 April 2014 Page 18
given a clear idea on the various criteria to be considered while building a water-based robot.
Then we assembled into groups to build our next bot. Engrossed in our work, we barely realised
the time fly by.
After the lunch break we completed our second wired robot with which we battled other
groups. This robot was purely mechanical. We mounted another circuit on it and were able to
operate it wirelessly via a Radio Frequency module. They then shared with us the different types
of robots they built along with its success stories.Since the resource people were our own seniors
we did not have any inhibitions while we asked doubts. The seniors were prompt in clearing our
dilemma about the right choice of components for the respective specifications, with problem
statements. As we solved the problem statements we were able to understand the logic to a
greater extent. It was a fun filled learning session.
The day concluded with distribution of certificates and the seniors sharing their
experience as first time teachers. We were congratulated for our efforts and also encouraged to
take part in symposiums to put to use the valuable skills we were taught in the two days. We are
grateful to the management and IEEE student branch for providing us with the opportunity to
gain firsthand experience and knowledge on robotics. The sessions brought in us a renewed
confidence to build robots and it has made us realize our passion.
