OUR HISTORY

Dr. Martens have a long established history of working side by side with the Service industries. In the first few years of the 1960s, our boots and shoes were the default product for postmen, policemen, medics and a nation of workers.

By the late 1970s, DM’s were cited as standard uniform for the Police – although some forces specified that the trademark yellow stitching had to be penned in black to meet colour regulations. The soles, which were resistant to oil, petrol and acid, proved particularly useful for dealing with leaking car fuel at the scene of traffic accidents. Some officers reported that the soft soles proved invaluable for sneaking up on criminals, whilst the high-legged quarters offered protection against physical attack.

In recent years the requirements from Service industries have evolved considerably and a more athletic product is often now required, with an increased emphasis on slip resistance. Dr. Martens has investigated in depth these contemporary requirements from the modern day service industry worker, specifically collaborating extensively with police and security officers to fully understand their needs.

SYMPATEX® MEMBRANE

The Sympatex® membrane is a fully waterproof construction consisting of a copolymer with 70% polyester and 30% polyether. Polyester is hydrophobic (repels water) and ployether is hydrophilic (allows water vapour through). It is a non-porous membrane that is watertight and yet simultaneously water vapour permeable.

SMARTMASK® INSOLE TECHNOLOGY

Smartmask® insoles (footbeds) are constructed using a special blend of polyurethane. The insole is designed specifically to provide extra cushioning and superior shock absorption properties. The insole is designed to be breathable, avoiding foot perspiration. The mould arch support provides the heel stability, which reduces foot and lower body discomfort for the wearer.

COSMO® COMFORT LININGS

Cosmo® footwear linings include technical spacer meshes, microfibers, technical nylon/polyester blends that are:

AGION®

Agion® antimicrobial treatment utilizes silver ions as it’s primary active ingredient and inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and fungus in or on the surface of the product that it is incorporated in, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

AN EXPLANATION OF MARKING CODES USED ON EUROPEAN CE-CERTIFIED FOOTWEAR PRODUCTS

All Dr. Martens Industrial safety footwear carries the fixed European standard mark EN345 or the more recent EN ISO 20345. The Occupational styles are built in accordance to EN347 or EN ISO 20347.

Marking codes:

SB Toe protection tested with 200J impact and 15kN compression force (includes fuel and oil-resistant outsoles).

S1 As SB with the addition of antistatic properties and energy absorption of heel region.

S2 As S1 with the addition of water-resistant upper materials

S3 As S2 with the addtion of a penetration-resistant midsole, must also have a cleated outsole.

If any of the products offer an additional safety feature then the appropriate symbol indicated below would be added to the standard, eg: S1 P would signify a product built to S1 specification with the addition of a penetration-resistant midsole.
