OUR HISTORY

Fifty years of being intimately involved with youth subculture make Dr. Martens a brand of genuine cultural significance. Yet behind the music, the fashion, the hair-cuts and the gigs, there is an even deeper and more practical history.

By the late 1950s, the Griggs company of Northampton UK had six decades of boot-making in the family; their reputation was already proudly founded on high quality, durable work boots. However, when they made the very first pair of air-cushioned Dr. Martens boots in April 1960, a British classic was created. Those decades of family experience, years of hands-on expertise evolving and improving every aspect of a work boot and a long-standing passion for combining comfort, safety and reliability in the workplace have produced footwear that is comfortably the toughest working boot since 1960.

This fact is proudly apparent in the current range of Dr. Martens Industrial footwear. Modern materials, cutting edge manufacture and impressive styling combine with this heritage of workmanship to produce a resilient and versatile range that can be totally relied on.

SYMPATEX® MEMBRANE

The Sympatex® membrane is a fully waterproof construction consisting of a copolymer with 70% polyester and 30% polyether. Polyester is hydrophobic (repels water) and ployether is hydrophilic (allows water vapour through). It is a non-porous membrane that is watertight and yet simultaneously water vapour permeable.

SMARTMASK® INSOLE TECHNOLOGY

Smartmask® insoles (footbeds) are constructed using a special blend of polyurethane. The insole is designed specifically to provide extra cushioning and superior shock absorption properties. The insole is designed to be breathable, avoiding foot perspiration. The mould arch support provides the heel stability, which reduces foot and lower body discomfort for the wearer.

COSMO® COMFORT LININGS

Cosmo® footwear linings include technical spacer meshes, microfibers, technical nylon/polyester blends that are:

All Dr. Martens Industrial safety footwear carries the fixed European standard mark EN345 or the more recent EN ISO 20345. The Occupational styles are built in accordance to EN347 or EN ISO 20347.

Marking codes:

SB Toe protection tested with 200J impact and 15kN compression force (includes fuel and oil-resistant outsoles).

S1 As SB with the addition of antistatic properties and energy absorption of heel region.

S2 As S1 with the addition of water-resistant upper materials

S3 As S2 with the addtion of a penetration-resistant midsole, must also have a cleated outsole.

If any of the products offer an additional safety feature then the appropriate symbol indicated below would be added to the standard, eg: S1 P would signify a product built to S1 specification with the addition of a penetration-resistant midsole.

P Penetration-resistant outsole: Penetration force ≥1100N
