Thesis Title: Regenerating the Live. The Archive as the Genesis of a Performance Practice
Supervisors: Dr Claire Warden and Dr Andrew Westerside
Synopsis:
By contesting formulations of the live medium based on the exigencies of disappearance my argumentation posits performance as a mode of archival production. In my thesis I argue that the life of a performance does not end over a fixed duration but is instead a dialogic process with a multitude of access points. My audio walk Voices from the Village frames the Olympic Village in East London as a site of tangled imaginaries of the future. Audiences document the site in an effort to instigate debate on the politics of urban regeneration. The piece forms the basis of my theories into how an integration of documentation into a performance can engender a type of audience participation analogous to archival research.

PROFILE
My primary area of expertise concerns the archive’s use as a point of departure in theatre- and performance-making and live performance’s relationship to historiography. The next phase of my research will examine how performance theory and practice can be applied to the library and information sciences discipline, with a particular focus on the performativity of producing and reading documents. This is with a view to conducting practice-based experiments on the effect documentation practices have on theatre production processes and a study of how the web-based technologies and social networks are changing the definitions of the audience.
