Dr. Pyi Thet Htun worked and served the Cumberland Countycommunity for many years as a physician at Valley InternalMedicine and at StatCare. He was an exemplary humanitar-ian and loving husband, father, son and brother to his fami-ly here and in Myanmar, where he was born. Dr. Htun washighly respected by his patients and colleagues for his gen-uine caring attitude and kindness. It was therefore a greatloss to our community when Dr. Htun passed away lastSeptember after a long illness.

Physician friends and Sandhills Physicians Inc. feltcompelled to establish a lasting tribute to Dr. Htun’s memo-ry. Since Dr. Htun’s widow, Dr. Thidar Aung, has been vol-unteering at The CARE Clinic since 2005, she graciously sug-gested making a donation to our clinic. Through the collab-orative efforts of the two groups, $6,300 was raised to sponsor

our Nurses Station in memory of Dr. Pyi Thet Htun. The CARE Clinic sincerely appreciates Dr.Aung, physician friends, and Sandhills Physicians Inc. for choosing our clinic for this generousmemorial tribute to Dr. Htun.

The Warmth of CAREDuring the unusually cold winter weather we have had recently, we can’t help but think of the lessfortunate among us who don’t have a warm house to go home to. Lynn put a face to this when shecame in for her appointment. She told us she had been suffering from a cough and runny nosefor over 3 weeks. She was constantly tired because she coughed all night instead of sleeping. Only27 years old, Lynn told us the last time she had received any medical care was in 2003 while shewas a college student. She had recently fallen on hard times and is currently living in her car. Notsurprisingly, Lynn developed a cough, sore throat, runny nose and earache.

Our volunteer physician diagnosed a sinus infection and our volunteer pharmacistquickly filled the prescription that would provide Lynn with relief and a good night’s sleep. A fewweeks after Lynn was seen, we received a letter from her, thanking us for caring for her. In parther letter read “You all treated me with more compassion than my own family does. Thank youfor making me feel like I was a human being and not just a crazy person who deserves to live onthe streets.” The last time we heard from Lynn she had just gotten a new job and is getting herlife back on track.

In response to suggestions from several donors, The CARE Clinic hasestablished a charitable endowment fund at the CumberlandCommunity Foundation. Placing endowment funds at theFoundation offers donors reassurance that the funds earmarked forendowment purposes will be used for such and not be invaded whena crisis arises. As specified in our agreement, this fund “shall be usedexclusively for the benefit of The CARE Clinic for general support,including programs, operations, facilities, and other needs of theorganization.”

Friends and loyal supporters of The CARE Clinic have established a fund to name The CARE Clinic’s Board Roomin honor of Sister Jean Rhoads to recognize her invaluable leadership in developing The CARE Clinic. At the requestof Catholic Social Ministries, the Daughters of Charity sent Sister Jean to Fayetteville as a volunteer in September 1992to establish a free health clinic. Over the course of the next year Sister Jean worked diligently with a steering com-mittee to develop the clinic from scratch. Incredibly, The CARE Clinic opened its doors for service to uninsured, lowincome residents of Cumberland County on November 16, 1993. Sister Jean Rhoads continued to serve as the firstExecutive Director of The CARE Clinic until 1998.

The Named Gift Opportunity for the Board Room is $50,000. Currently, $27,350 has been raised.
