    Career Statement

    Research experience Current research:

    A feasibility study of smartphone-based brainwave entrainment (BWE) technology as a novel treatment for chronic pain. 2020. In collaboration with the University of Leeds Academic Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the University of Manchester Human Pain Research Group. An electroencephalography study investigating dose-effect of brainwave entrainment followed by a home-based feasibility study with both quantitative and qualitative outcome measures assessing a novel brainwave entrainment smartphone application. Funded by LTHT/Leeds Cares Clinical Research Fellowship.

    Key previous research experience:

    Alpha brainwave entrainment for chronic pain – patient perspectives on a novel smartphone application. 2019. In collaboration with the University of Leeds Academic Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the University of Manchester Human Pain Research Group. Qualitative data collection from 15 participants using semi-structured interviews and template analysis.

    Delays to accessing healthcare and rehabilitation following trauma in Madagascar – a qualitative study. 2018. Qualitative study with 11 patients or family members and 13 healthcare professionals in Madagascar. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups and thematic analysis. Funded by BSRM Memorial Travelling Scholarship.

    The NHS Health Check: An analysis of the initial implementation strategy in Leeds. 2010. In collaboration with Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT). Qualitative and quantitative data collection using information sheets and questionnaires sent to 5 GP practices. Basic descriptive statistical analysis.

    Audit/quality improvement projects I have been involved in the design and implementation of five audits/quality improvement projects. Key projects include:

    Improving the patient pathway for spinal cord injury rehabilitation in Leeds. 2019. Reviewed case notes to analyse the current care pathways and worked with the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team across two hospital sites to improve patient flow.

    Consent for Botulinum toxin injections. 2016. Independently completed audit to assess consent practices for the use of botulinum toxin treatment at Leeds General Infirmary, resulting in improvements to the consent form and filing process.

    Is hypoglycaemia being adequately recorded and treated in patients with Diabetes Mellitus? - An audit of inpatients at Calderdale Royal Hospital. 2015. Independently completed audit to evaluate whether hypoglycaemia is adequately recorded and managed at a large district general hospital.

    Grant Income National Awards:

    2019 Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust/Leeds Cares Clinical Research Fellowship Up to £50,000 for a 12-month clinical research fellowship.

    2017 BSRM Memorial Postgraduate Travelling Research Scholarship £7500 scholarship awarded to explore the current unmet need in research and service delivery for disabling conditions in low-income countries. [British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine].

    2010 Vandervell Award £250 travel bursary awarded for medical elective project to explore challenges to health care delivery in Malaysian Borneo. [University of Leeds].

    2009 Leeds for Life Award

    £500 grant awarded for BSc (intercalated) International Health qualitative research project to identify barriers to accessing maternal health services in Nepal. [University of Leeds].

    Teaching During my clinical career I have taught junior doctors and students in both formal and informal settings. These have included: history and examination skills, junior doctor clinical skills, lecture-based programme, bedside teaching, mock interviews.

    Key highlights:

    International teaching (Sept 2017): Developed and delivered a two-week teaching programme, along with two colleagues, on rehabilitation for disabling musculoskeletal conditions in Madagascar.

    Clinical skills (2015): Led interactive scenario-based teaching sessions for 5th year students, practicing skills such as prescribing and calculating fluid balance.

    Lecture based (2011): Taught 5th year medical students as part of a year-long formal teaching programme in FY1, on key topics for medical finals.

    Outside of medicine I have taught primary school aged children and their parents basic science through interactive workshops with Mad Science Group Inc.

    Personal Interests Outside of medicine I love playing the violin and have regular lessons. I volunteer for the MND Association, providing one-to-one support for people affected by MND. I also enjoy yoga, running and photography.
