Vol. 12, Issue - 3, October 2012
The withdrawal of the monsoon has been marked by
episodes of extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of
Maharashtra in contrast to the sparse showers during the
rainy season. These vagaries of the monsoon have already
affected the planting of the sugarcane crop among others
and will surely result in shortage of cane for the crushing
season 2013-14. A drop in the production during the
forthcoming coming crushing season of 2012-13 as
compared to the previous season is already expected. This
situation poses many problems for the sugar industry and
more so for the mills in the cooperative sector. In order to
meet these challenges head on VSI organized two state
level meetings in the past quarter. The first meeting of cane
development officers focused on the important issue of seed
production whilst the second one targeted the measures
to be adopted to overcome the problem of short crushing
season. The deliberations and conclusions from these vital
meeting have been profiled in this issue.
Annual conventions of various sugar industry
associations in the country are usually organized in the third
quarter of every year. VSI scientists actively participate in
these gatherings and the research papers presented by them
are well received. This issue details the representation of
VSI at the annual conventions of STAI, DSTA and SISSTA along
with the prizes awarded to VSI scientists but most
significantly the Lifetime Achievement Award to VSI Director
General Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh. It is indeed a proud
moment for the Institute and recognition of his stellar
contribution to the rising prominence of VSI on the national
and international scene. The participation of VSI in the AIDA
seminar on Production -Availability-Policy on Ethanol &
Distillery Effluent Treatment Technologies has also been
included in this issue.
Other events in the quarter include a visit by a team
from Shivaji University Kolhapur, training programme for
farmers from Gujrat, sanction of two training programmes
by CPCB, fire and safety training at VSI etc.. The academic
courses of VSI also begin during this quarter and there are
currently more than 500 students enrolled in the Institute.
The preparations for the oncoming crushing season are in
full swing at various mills and the times ahead are
challenging but VSI shall continue to help the industry in
meeting them.

STATE LEVEL MEETINGS AT VSI
The sugar industry in Maharashtra state is facing
a serious problem of cane availability for crushing
season 2012 -13 mainly due to drought situation. In
current season, adsali plantation is comparatively
very less and
planting of cane in
preseason and
suru season is also
likely to be
a d v e r s e l y
affected. This will
result in acute
shortage of cane
for 2013-14
crushing season. In
order to increase
the cane
availability, more attention needs to be given on seed
production and distribution programme. In this
context, VSI organized a meeting of Cane
Development Officers of the sugar factories in the
state at its campus on September 6, 2012. The
meeting was chaired by the Director General,
Shivajirao Deshmukh.
This meeting was attended by Shri. Jaiprakash
Dandegaokar, Member, VSI Governing Council, and
Chairman, Purna SSK Ltd., Dr. J.D. Pawar, Member,VSI
Governing Council and Chairman, Vasantdada SSK Ltd.
Kalwan, Nasik, Mr. Sudhir Dive, Managing Director,
Purti Power and Sugar Mill, Nagpur, Mr. Ranware,
Managing Director, Vithalrao Shinde SSK Ltd. Madha,
Solapur, Mr. A. R. Chavan, Managing Director, Rena
SSK Ltd., Latur, Mr. Divate, General Manager, Sanjivani
SSK Ltd. Kopargaon along with 119 Cane
Development Officers and Chief Agriculture Officers
from 93 sugar mills. This was exclusive meet of sugar
mill management representatives, cane
d e v e l o p m e n t
officers and the VSI
scientists to
discuss strategies
for planning the
seed production
and distribution
programme for
2012-13 and 2013-
14 planting season.
F o l l o w i n g
issues regarding
cane availability
and the strategies for planning the seed production
and distribution programme were discussed and a
crash programme of seed nursery planning was
finalized in the meeting.
1. Due to prevailing drought situation in the state,
sugar industry is facing serious problem of cane
availability for crushing season 2012 -13. As per
the information received from the sugar mills,
total12 lac ha area was registered under
sugarcane in the state. Of the total registered
area, 76940 ha area was dried due to water
scarcity, 72115 ha was diverted for fodder
purpose and 23425 ha for jaggery preparation.
Besides these diversions, 10 % of standing cane
will be harvested for seed purpose and 10% area
will be common in adjoining sugar mills. Hence,
State Level Meeting Of Cane Development Officers For Seed Production

only 8.35 lac ha area under sugarcane will be
harvested for crushing and from which
approximately 500 lac tonne of cane will be
available for crushing in 2012-13.
2. In order to increase the cane availability the
main component of seed needs to be given
more attention. Therefore, in depth discussion
on availability of seed material for current
planting season as well as next planting was
held and the seed production strategies were
finalized.
3. In 2012-13 planting season, 8174 ha area of
certified seed is standing in the state from
which only 82570 ha will planted as
commercial sugarcane. Besides this seed
material, another 50000 ha is required for seed
purpose for the plantation on about 5 lac ha
area. Therefore, it is decided to select the good
healthy sugarcane plots well distributed in the
operational area of sugar mills for seed
purpose. VSI scientists will help the sugar mills
for selection of healthy plots for seed purpose.
4. In current season, adsali plantation is
comparatively very less and planting of cane
in preseason and suru season is likely to be
adversely affected. Therefore, there will be
acute shortage of cane in 2013-14 crushing
season. Similarly, there will be acute shortage
of good quality seed in planting season 2013-
14. To overcome this situation, VSI has
suggested a seed production and distribution
scheme to the sugar mills with the help of
farmers. The main components of the scheme
are as under.
i) The main theme of the scheme is to have
seed nursery of each farmer or of maximum
sugarcane growers so as to spread or replace
the seed from maximum area in a shorter
period.
ii) Each sugar mill have to estimate their seed
requirement on the basis of daily crushing
capacity, cane requirement for crushing, total
area under sugarcane (plant and ratoon) and
area to be newly planted.
The following table illustrates the seed
requirement of sugar mills with various capacities.
iii) The farmers with average sugarcane yield of
minimum 100 t/ha and having assured
irrigation facility should be selected for the
seed production programme.

During crushing season 2011-12 about 771 lac MT
of cane was crushed in Maharashtra to produce 89.96
lac MT of sugar with an average recovery of 11.65%.
During ensuing season about 545 lac MT sugarcane is
expected to be crushed and about 60 lac MT sugar
production is expected with recovery of 11.50%.This is
a great challenge for sugar factories in Maharashtra.
In view of above VSI arranged a one day technical meet
of technical heads of the member sugar factories on
September 16, 2012 to discuss the measures to be
adopted to overcome the problems faced by short
crushing season.
Mr. R V Dani, Head Sugar Technology department
welcomed all the participants. The key note address
was delivered by Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh Director
General, VSI. In his presidential address Shri.
Shankarraoji Kolhe, Founder Trustee, VSI asked the
technologists about various controls in factory working
like achieving highest possible production by keeping
minimum hours lost percent available, use higher
imbibitions percent in the tune of 250% on fiber,
moisture of bagasse is to be maintained below 49%,
maintain minimum possible losses in the boiling house
and to increase production of bolder grain so as to fetch
higher price of sugar.
The meet was attended by 275 delegates including
Chief Engineers, Chief Chemists, Dy. Chief Engineers,
Dy. Chief Chemist, Sugar Engineers/Chemist from
various sugar mills. It was conducted in two sessions.
During first session problems related to cane carrier,
Return Bagasse Carrier (RBC), Mill and boiler
maintenance and operation was actively discussed.
At the end of this session, factories (their
representatives) have agreed to maintain mixed juice
% cane above 105 % by using more imbibition water
at mills due to shortage of sugar cane this year.
The second session i.e Processing Session was
divided in to three sections viz. 1. juice clarification,
2. use of modern steam devices & evaporator
configuration and 3. pan boiling and sugar quality.
In this session, experiences were shared by different
