IS PRACTITIONER COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

§ SIM Atlanta Leadership

• I have successfully nurtured the evolution of the Society for Information Management

(SIM) Atlanta Chapter for nearly a decade. Society for Information Management

(SIM) is a premier non-profit national community of senior information technology

(IT) practitioners, reputed academics, and other thought leaders. I was elected

Chairman of the Board for seven consecutive years. During this period, I have

worked closely with business leaders to run the organization. From vision

development to day-to-day operations, I have been a very hands-on leader in

managing the organization.

• Through its donations and contributions, SIM Atlanta has indirectly touched 6.5

million people and over 100 other non-profit organizations. Each year several

scholarships are given to outstanding students of SIM member institutions in the

region. As SIM Atlanta Chairman, I was also instrumental in starting the SIM

Atlanta Student Fellowship program where the selected students are not only

awarded $1000 scholarship money but also get to attend all SIM Atlanta events for

one full SIM year (September to June), network with members, and work on special

projects and activities that will give them a flavor of IS leadership in action. Two

UGA students – Zach Seelye and Abby Weinstein – are the 2015-2016 SIM Atlanta

Student Fellows.

• I was nominated for the SIM Leader of the Year award in 2014 and was recognized

as one of the finalists for the award. This was my second nomination (I was

nominated in 2009) for this prestigious leadership award.

• The following testimonials are reflective of my contributions as the leader of this

organization:

“I’ve known Dave for more than 10 years, and I’ve worked with him on the SIM board. He’s very dedicated to the things that interest him, and his interest in SIM has been a key factor in its success under his chairmanship. He’s a very personable guy, but he doesn’t settle for anything less than meeting his goals. During Dave’s tenure, SIM membership has increased, a golf event was created that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity, and the quality of speakers at SIM meetings has improved. Some of those changes have come from Dave’s direct work, and some have resulted from key board members who Dave persuaded to participate in SIM’s work. I’m honored to have known Dave and to have worked with him at SIM.”

Harwell Thrasher Author & Speaker, Founder of Making ITclear, Inc.

“Dave is an exceptional leader and did an outstanding job as Chairman of the Board for the Atlanta chapter of SIM. Under his leadership membership increased, new special interest groups were created, and the content of the meetings were always of great interest to the members. His tireless effort and years of dedication in making SIM one of the best professional groups in Atlanta will always appreciated by the many members of SIM. Thanks Dave.”

Jim Montembeau

President, Midpoint Search

“I have been honored to know Dave Chatterje for over 5 years now through my membership in SIM Atlanta and as a guest speaker at his Information Management classes at UGA. Dave has done a fantastic and often thankless job as the President of SIM Atlanta for many years. He is a consummate professional, very knowledgeable on the issues facing IT Leaders today, and puts in long hours in this volunteer role to help IT Managers network with each other and hear excellent speakers at our monthly SIM meetings. I recommend Dave highly.”

Lee W. Crump Group Vice President, Rollins, Inc.

“Dave has really energized the SIM Atlanta chapter. Dave devotes several hours of time every week, usually behind the scenes and without credit, to ensure that the depth of membership and breadth of activities within SIM Atlanta continues to crest new high-watermarks. He tirelessly promotes SIM International’s activities and opportunities amongst our membership. He brings a wealth of ideas to the table and then works with SIM members and the broader IT community to bring them to fruition. He ensures impeccable execution of all monthly meetings and other SIM member interactions, which has built SIM Atlanta a very solid and professional reputation. In summary, Dave has breathed vitality into SIM Atlanta and we all owe him a deep debt of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities we have in SIM Atlanta today.”

Zareer Siganporia

Senior Director, PMO, DTI LLC.

“As President of SIM Atlanta, Dave has been instrumental in establishing and growing the partnership between SIM Atlanta and TechBridge, a nonprofit that drives community impact by bringing affordable technology to other nonprofits. Our community has been fortunate to benefit from his leadership and vision that spearheaded the growth of SIM’s annual golf tournament from $2,000 to $107,000 in 8 short years and his community-minded spirit that ensured those funds were reinvested in growing the capacity of nonprofits.”

Carrie Bates Hasting,

Chief Development Officer, TechBridge Inc.

“I have known Dave for close to 10 years. During this period, he has demonstrated both a passion for and commitment to the greater Atlanta business and university communities. As President of the Atlanta Society for Information Management, www.simnet.com, he has worked tirelessly with his Board to grow and expand the role of Information Technology across business, government and higher education. Atlanta is blessed to have Dave and his talents at work across the public and private commercial landscape.”

SCHOLARSHIP IMPACT

§ As mentioned earlier, my research has focused on the different facets of strategic

management of technology– from technology sense-making to enterprise digitization

initiatives and change management, data governance, internal controls, information security,

and performance measurement.

§ My work has been cited over 1500 times in peer-reviewed journals and also significantly

influenced practice. One particular article (Shaping Up for E-Commerce) has been cited over

800 times.

§ Numerous organizations (both for-profit and non-profit) have benefitted from my work on

enterprise IT governance issues, especially in the area of IT value management. Here are

some examples of the organizational impact of my work:

• The IT value management study inspired the management of a major packaging

company to transition from running IT as a cost center to that of a value center. The

transition was not easy as it involved several structural, procedural, and people related

changes. The radical change was well worth it as the IT function became a strategic

enabler and started performing at a high level. While IT spend as a percentage of

revenue decreased significantly (by almost 50%), the revenue generated from IT

enabled superior product and service innovations increased by 45%.

• The IT value management framework also played a major role in helping a

diversified manufacturing organization derive optimal value from a large-scale

business transformation project. The company especially benefitted from the

recommendations of establishing mechanisms to enforce accountability. The project

ROI exceeded the desired 18% goal.

7

• The IT value management methodology led to the redesign, repositioning, and

relabeling of a customer relationship management system in a global software and

software service provider. A key contribution of the methodology was to sensitize

management to clearly definiting value and developing a set of focussed metrices.

The end-result was greater organization wide buy-in, significant cost savings (at least

$100 K annually) from the process improvements, and increase in revenue generation

(15 to 20%) from superior cross-selling and upselling initiatives. Another major

impact was greater accuracy in revenue forecasting and resource planning.

commitments and experience.

Chairman & Member, UGA’s Program Review and Assessment Committee (2013-Present)

§ As part of this university wide leadership team, I have studied and authored multiple

academic program and unit performance review reports. The reports covered every aspect of

structure, FTE distribution rationale, productivity assessment metrics, research productivity,

teaching effectiveness, mentoring mechanisms, success and viability of the different degree

and non-degree programs offered, and physical and technological infrastructure.

§ I guided the academic program review policy and procedural changes through several

committees and sub-committes before it was passed by the University Council in November

2016. Through these changes the review process will be more focused and faculty time

commitment will be minimized.
