Privacy
Concern to make data available for undefined use
Security
Concern to compromise plant security through remote access connections
Interoperability
Data cannot be easily accessed across differing application systems
Reliability
Customers expectations are driven by experience with operations system
Investment protection
Existing operation critical infrastructure can not be exchanged to support IoT, plant lifecycle is much longer than IT infrastructure

ABB Ability™ for Power Grids: SubstationsExample: Digital Substation and Asset Health Center
Customer’s situation:
Miles of copper cabling for point-to-point connections for measurement, protection and control, resulting in expensive testing and maintenance
Valuable and critical substation assets (transformers and circuit breakers) lack comprehensive condition monitoring systems, resulting in islands of information as well as periodic rather than condition based maintenance strategies
ABB’s solution:
Digital communications where fiber optic networks replace copper signaling wire.
Secure, high performance digital infrastructure drives the operation of the substation and
provides asset health data to the cloud-based asset health center for optimized
maintenance strategies
Benefits:
CAPEX reduction through reduction of substation footprint and copper cables
OPEX reduction in reduced downtime, maintenance and testing

ABB Ability™ for Marine: Remote MonitoringExample: FPSO Yùum K’ak’Náab, BW Offshore
Customer’s situation:
Drive tripped due to component failure.
Reduced cargo transfer capacity lead to delays in production.
Onboard personnel not able to determine root cause of fault.
ABB’s solution:
Remote connection was requested, Viewed historical data from time of fault.
Based on alarm and events participating crew was instructed to perform physical tests on specific
parts related to the fault. In cooperation the faulty part was detected and replaced with onboard spare
part. ABB remotely monitored initial start-up after part replacement.
Benefits:
Problem solved within 5 hours without re-routing and port visit
“The Remote Diagnostics Services provided by
ABB is excellent.
The process of solving problems between ABB
and onboard personnel has been excellent,
inclusive response time, reporting and auditable
trail of problem solving process”.

ABB Ability™ for Marine: Energy OptimizationAdvisory suite for entire AIDA fleet
Customer’s situation:
AIDA, German-based cruise operator, sets high demands in the environmental friendly
solutions it deploys onboard the vessels:
to improve the environmental footprint of its fleet
to minimize the overall energy costs for the entire fleet
ABB solution:
Equip entire AIDA cruise fleet with:
SEEMP-compliant energy monitoring and
EMMA management system and decision-support tool to minimize the overall energy costs
for individual vessels and entire fleets
All data generated onboard transferred to a cloud-based application for vessel
benchmarking.
Provides management onshore with full visibility of energy consumption across the entire
fleet.
Extensive ABB analytical services, including simulations, helps customer on future business
case analysis

ABB Ability™ for LV Motors: Smart SensorBringing low voltage motors into the IoT
Challenge:
Majority of installed industry assets are “dumb”; providing data-driven services is not possible
Big potential in installed base and brownfield installations that need to be easily retrofitted
ABB Solution:
The Smart Sensor monitors and sends key condition and operating data of electric motors via
smartphone to a secure cloud-based server.
Specifically developed algorithms analyze the data and send recommendations for predictive
maintenance directly to the user’s smartphone or PC.
Benefits:
Reduce downtime by as much as 70%
Extend a motor´s life by up to 30%
Improve energy efficiency by up to 10%
2-Nov-16
ABB Ability™ for LV Motors: Safety support for MV BreakersInteractive collaboration
Challenge:
Remote Analytics allows experts to remain remote, but actions still have to be executed locally
Service engineers are acting in a potentially dangerous environment
ABB solution:
Video support for field engineer, interacting with the remote expert
Remote interactive safety advice and mobile safety checklist for safe working environment
Remote interaction for safe working environment
Benefits:
Support by a remote health & safety expert adds an outside view to the situation
Unsafe conditions result in withdrawn work permit by remote health & safety expert

ABB Ability™ – Internet of Things, Services and PeopleConclusions
Intranet of Things – Internet of Things
Intelligent devices equipped with sensors are providing large amounts
of data that is today used in the controls system
Today’s essential requirements remain valid (safety, reliability), cyber
security and data privacy become more important for all players along
the value chain
Internet of People
People will not be obsolete in the future context, as they remain in
control of the production process. People will be the decision makers
Internet of Services
Services will become more advanced through the use of data
analytics. If the analytics results are not turned into improvement
actions, customer benefits remain low. Opportunities for new service
models that build on collaboration with partners and customers will
evolve.
